Wireless networks such as WiFi suffer communication performance issues in addition to those seen on wired networks due to the characteristics of the radio communication channel used by their Physical Layers (PHY). Understanding these issues is a complex but necessary task given the importance of wireless networks for the transfer of wide ranging packet steams including video as well as traditional data. Simulators are not accurate enough to allow all the intricacies of such communication to be accurately understood, especially when complex interactions between the protocols of different layers occurs. The paper suggests cross layer measurement as a solution to the problem of understanding and analysis of such complex communication issues and proposes a framework in which appropriate performance measurements can be made from a WiFi network supporting a video streaming application. The framework has been used to collect these measurements at the PHY, MAC, Transport and Application layers. Analysis of the collected measurements has allowed the effects of noise interference at the PHY to be related to the perceived performance at the Application Layer for a video streaming application. This has allowed the effect of the SNR on the download time of a video sequence to be studied.

An improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) with oscillating inertia weight factor and self-adaptation mutation factor is proposed in this paper. The IPSO algorithm is used to achieve the partition of information sets. In the process of partition, the concept of Shannon entropy is introduced. The information set is divided into subsets according to measurement information entropy and the constituted objective function, and its essence is the use of different sensors to obtain a greater amount of information. The method is applied to micro resistivity scanning imaging logging data set partition. Copyright © 2010 Binary Information Press.

In order to reduce the financial risks of Oversea Merger and Acquisition, and determine the best loan credit structure model for Overseas Merger and Acquisition project, a novel loans credit evaluation model of Overseas Merger and Acquisition project based on Analytic Hierarchy Process was proposed in this paper. During the implementation period of Overseas Merger and Acquisition, a comprehensive loans credit structure evaluation model of Overseas Merger and Acquisition project, which model has the weighted factors, has been established by both Analytic Hierarchy Process and risk indicators at all levels in this paper. Compared with the traditional methods, the evaluation model based on this method has better performance in reducing the overseas investment risk for bank.

In this paper, a hierarchical multirate control scheme for nonlinear discrete-time systems is proposed, composed of a robust model predictive controller (MPC) and a multirate integral sliding mode (MISM) controller. In particular, the MISM controller acts at a faster sampling time than the MPC controller, and reduces the effect of model uncertainties and external disturbances, in order to obtain, at the next sampling instant of the MPC controller, a value of the system state that is as close as possible to the nominal one. To obtain this result, the control variable is composed of two parts: one generated by the MPC controller, and the other by the MISM controller. The a-priori reduction of the disturbance terms turns out to be very useful in order to improve the convergence properties of the MPC controller.

To optimize the energy consumption during transmission in a secure remote fingerprint authentication system, most approaches have considered a fixed-rate compression of WSQ(Wavelet Scalar Quantization). To balance the energy consumption and the recognition accuracy, however, we need to consider the total energy consumption during compression/encryption/transmission and the quality of the given image. In this paper, we first develop an energy-accuracy prediction model. Then, from the given image, we can evaluate the quality of it. Finally, from the user's minimum requirement of the recognition accuracy, the energy-optimized compression rate under the requirement can be derived adaptively. Based on the experimental result, we show that total energy consumption of the fixed approach can be reduced by 29%.

Image-guided surgery offers great advantages to surgeons through the possibility to track tools in 3D space and to navigate based on the virtual model of the patient. In the case of robot-assisted procedures, both the inherent accuracy of the system components and the quality of the registration procedures are critical to provide high precision treatment delivery. One of the major barriers towards more technology-integrated procedures is the fact that alterations in the operating room environment can fundamentally change the performance of the system, decrease the accuracy, and therefore pose significant danger to the patient. Surgical events from the control point of view may include motion of the robot, motion of the camera, or motion of the patient. The paper describes a new concept to treat these events, to track and automatically compensate for abrupt changes that may affect the accuracy of a robot-integrated interventional system. Our solution is to use all available information at a given time, including the intra-operative tracker's internal base frame, to distinguish between different surgical events. The concept has been developed and tested on the neurosurgical robot system at the Johns Hopkins University. Initial experiments performed on data recordings from simulated scenarios showed that the algorithm was able to correctly identify the cases.

The IEC61499 is an open standard for distributed control and automation. The interface between control software and hardware or communications is achieved by means of the so-called Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB). This paper presents the guidelines to build communication SIFBs based on the emerging OMG DDS (Data Distribution Service) middleware. This specification implements in a very efficient way the Publisher/Subscriber paradigm providing significant QoS configuration possibilities. These characteristics make DDS suitable for implementing the communications among time-critical devices. By using these DDS-SIFBs within IEC61499 code generation tools, the designers of the distributed applications will be allowed to use this powerful technology in the new distributed applications.

In this paper we analyze stability properties of multi-agent control system in a cluttered environment with an artificial potential based on bell-shaped functions. In our approach attractive and repulsive forces created by potential gradient have the same form which allows definition of target formation that is parameter invariant. Due to the fact that agents are identical, the proposed structure of formation potential is invariant to the interchange of agents configurations, hence, target in which particular agent would eventually end up, depends only on formation initial condition and environment structure (obstacles). We show that position of unwanted stable equilibria can be controlled by parameters that define elementary potential functions. This fact has been used for synthesis of an adaptation algorithm, such that arrival of agents at required formation is guarantied. Simulation results, presented at the end of the paper, confirm correctness of the proposed control scheme.

Lyapunov-stable nonlinear plants can be approximated by an LTI model in many cases. If this approximation is obtained then it is possible to construct a G2DOF control system. The paper presents a new approach how the important relationships between the actuator, process and design parameters furthermore robustness measures can be determined. In this decomposition method the optimal control design for two-degree of freedom time delay control systems is discussed. Using a proper CAD algorithm the exact relationships can be plotted and the ultimate robustness limit of any control can be explicitly calculated.

Due to the stochastic characteristic of photovoltaic (PV) generation, energy storage devices are indispensable to smooth the power flow and provide the electric energy with high quality. In this paper, an integrated DC/DC converter is proposed to realize high performance interfaces for PV array, battery and load. This converter consists of a boost converter for the PV array and a buck/boost converter for the battery, which can realize multifunction including power generation, charge and discharge. The grid-connected and stand-alone operation modes of this converter are analyzed. From this analysis, the control strategies are developed for both modes. A coordination scheme is proposed for the power balance at the stand-alone mode. Simulation and experiments verify the practical feasibility and effectiveness of this multi-function converter.
