Due to the need in studying finite-time control problems, this paper extends the well-known concept, input-to-state stability (ISS). A new concept, called finite-time input-to-state stability (finite-time ISS), is proposed and is applied to the finite-time stability analysis of some nonlinear systems and the design of finite-time stabilizing feedback laws. In addressing finite-time stability and control, nonsmoothness occurs in system nonlinearities and controller functions, and poses a serious technical difficulty. It is found that finite-time ISS plays an important role in nonsmooth control, in the same way as the conventional ISS in the asymptotic stability analysis and stabilization.

The paper presents a new method of decision tree induction based on formal concept analysis (FCA). The decision tree is derived using a concept lattice, i.e. a hierarchy of clusters provided by FCA. The idea behind is to look at a concept lattice as a collection of overlapping trees. The main purpose of the paper is to explore the possibility of using FCA in the problem of decision tree induction. In our paper we are proposing a complex model of the student (learner) in a virtual educational environment, supported by a multi-agent system. The whole system is centered on the student and it mainly takes into account Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory that states that social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of cognition. The model is part of a larger project - DANTE - Socio-Cultural Models implemented through multi-agent architecture for e-learning - that has as main objective the development of a student centred framework for the virtual educational universe that facilitates collaborative learning. The virtual educational world is inhabited by agents: human agents and artificial agents that interact. Agents can be mediating agents, semiotic agents or social agents;they can be intelligent software entities or simple ones, like interface agents.

To better identify the objects in remote sensing images, the multispectral images with high spectral resolution and low spatial resolution, and the panchromatic images with high spatial resolution and low spectral resolution need to be fused. Many fusion techniques are discussed in the recent years to obtain images with high spectral resolution and also high spatial resolution. In this paper an image fusion technique, based on integrating both the Intensity-Hue-Saturation (IHS) and the Discrete Wavelet Frame Transform (DWFT), is proposed for boosting the quality of remote sensing images. A panchromatic and multispectral image from Landsat-7(ETM+) satellite has been fused using this new approach. Experimental results show that the proposed technique improves the spectral and spatial qualities of the fused images. Moreover, when this technique is applied to noisy and de-noised remote sensing images it can preserve the quality of the fused images. Comparison analyses between different fusion techniques are also presented and show that the proposed technique outperforms the other techniques.

Considering the large amounts of data that is nowadays produced in the biochemistry (functional genomics) it is difficult to extract the information from the measurements. There is currently also a great interest in the development of novel analytical technologies for rapid screening of disease symptoms in pharmaceutical and clinical applications. Modeling and simulation can provide a useful help in understanding the relations of the measured substances and to minimize the need for measurements. The BioChem library presented here is the first free Modelica library available for mathematical modeling of biochemical processes. Three examples are shown to illustrate the library. First, a simple insulin model is presented. Then a simplified model of cholesterol together with simulations are shown. Next, a simple drug model together with parameter estimation in NONMEN are presented. The BioChem library allows for fast and end-user friendly modeling of biomedical systems. The graphical user interface provides graphics similar to that used in the description of metabolic pathways in biochemistry.

Modulation quality in WiMAX systems that rely on OFDM modulation is dealt with. A digital signal processing approach is, in particular, proposed, aimed at assessing the performance of transmitters in terms of standard parameters. At present, WiMAX technology deployment is at the very beginning. Also, measurement instrumentation mandated to assist WiMAX apparatuses production and installation is not completely mature, and entitled to be significantly improved in terms of functionality and performance. In particular, no dedicated instrument is already present on the market, but the available solutions are arranged complementing existing hardware, such as real-time spectrum analyzers and vector signal analyzers, with a proper analysis software. Differently from the aforementioned solutions, the proposed approach is independent of the specific hardware platform mandated to the demodulation of the incoming WiMAX signal. It can operate, in fact, with any hardware capable of achieving and delivering the baseband I and Q components of the signal under analysis. Moreover, being open-source it can be improved or upgraded according to future needs.
