Accurate forecasting of renewable energy output is vital for enhancing the efficiency and stability of integrated power systems. This study introduces a novel deep learning approach that combines Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to predict energy production from solar, wind and hydropower sources. The hybrid CNN-LSTM model utilizes historical meteorological data, including solar irradiance, cloud cover, temperature, wind speed, and precipitation, to forecast future energy generation with high precision. The CNN component extracts spatial features from the weather data, while the LSTM component captures temporal dependencies and long-term trends. For solar energy forecasting, the model estimates solar radiation based on factors like temperature and humidity, while wind energy predictions rely on wind speed variations, and hydropower output is forecasted using rainfall and watershed information. This comprehensive approach enables accurate and reliable predictions of renewable energy production. The model's performance is evaluated using metrics such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), R-squared (R2), etc. Results demonstrate that the hybrid model significantly improves the accuracy and reliability of renewable energy forecasts. This advanced tool provides valuable insights for energy managers, utility companies, and policymakers, aiding in optimizing resource allocation and enhancing the sustainability and resilience of energy grids. © 2024 IEEE.

Movement-based interaction design is an innovative field that leverages the body's natural movements to create intuitive and engaging interfaces. This approach takes a sensorial approach to visual and auditory memory, seeking to enhance user engagement and create more meaningful experiences. The use of movement-based interfaces has significant implications for senior citizens, who may have mobility limitations or cognitive impairments. Using movement-based interfaces, seniors can engage in physical activity and maintain cognitive function, essential aspects for healthy aging. Movement-based interfaces can also help children develop physical coordination, cognitive skills, and social interaction. Furthermore, movement-based interaction design can benefit everyone's physical well-being by promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior. Studies have demonstrated that movement-based interfaces can enhance posture, physical activity levels, and general health. By combining movement with sensory experiences, movement-based interaction design can create a more engaging and enjoyable experience for users, which can motivate them to maintain physical and cognitive health. In this article, we present two case studies that research the effectiveness of movement-based interaction design in enhancing visual and auditory memory. Overall, the results of these case studies suggest that movement-based interaction design is an effective approach to enhancing visual and auditory memory. The introduction of movement-based interfaces can give participants a more enjoyable and memorable experience, improving user engagement and information retention. © 2023 IEEE.

The massive adoption of IoT devices, the recent developments in the efficiency of AI systems, and the increase of edge computational power, accelerated the deployment of edge AI systems. The implementation of these systems through the use of low-power embedded devices scattered across the edges of a network allows for reduced latency and cost, compared to traditional cloud-based AI computing systems. As a result of the low-complexity AI models and the available low-power embedded systems on the market, this paper provides a comparative study on the inference performance of convolutional neural networks for different edge devices, by exploiting low-power GPUs and dedicated AI hardware. The benchmark results were able to achieve 864 inferences/s for the Jetson AGX Xavier board on a pre-trained SqueezeNet, while reaching a high power efficiency of 52.6 inferences/s per Watt. For the dedicated Movidius neural stick, the system requires only 1.5 W for processing 24.2 inferences/s. © 2023 IEEE.

In agricultural robotics, the integration of multi-spectral image processing and deep learning (DL) has become the state-of-the-art (SOTA) in crop monitoring, yield estimation, and efficient land management. This work addresses the impact of different DL-segmentation models and evaluation protocols on multispectral imagery datasets collected by a UAV over vineyards. In terms of evaluation protocols, we have considered train-test split, standard k-fold cross-validation, and group k-fold cross-validation. While the first two assume that the training and test data are drawn from the same underlying distribution, the group k-fold cross-validation protocol assumes that each fold represents distinct distributions. Most works either adopt train-test split or k-fold cross-validation under the assumption that both the training and test sets are drawn from the same distribution. However, this assumption is rarely met in real-world applications. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate and compare different evaluation protocols within the context of a real-world agricultural task, highlighting their limitations and weaknesses. Two SOTA DL-based segmentation models, SegNet and DeepLabV3, are employed to perform semantic segmentation on datasets of three Vineyards. The models have been trained and tested considering single-modality representations. In addition to the RGB modality, models trained on NDVI, GNDVI and early fusion are also evaluated. The performance of the models are evaluated using the IoU metric across different dataset configurations. The results indicate that the early fusion representation achieves the highest performance across the various splitting protocols, compared to the single-input representations. The results also show that the train-test and random k-fold splitting approaches report similar results. However, when employing group k-fold the performance drops consistently across both models and the modalities. This indicates that the models

This paper describes a study on exploring probability densities applied to the logit values of deep models to obtain predictions with probabilistic interpretation. Kernel density estimation (KDE) is used to providing non-parametric modeling of the underlying logit-values distribution. While preliminary results show promising potential, this work lays the foundation for future research, where the combination of KDE with other advanced techniques could further enhance segmentation performance of deep models. This study reports segmentation results on a dataset collected by a UAV equipped with a multispectral camera flying over vineyards.

The Aedes mosquito, found in tropical areas, transmits, and causes dengue fever. The spread of the dengue fever virus from an infected Aedes mosquito bite typically takes between three and fifteen days to manifest itself clinically as dengue fever symptoms. Early and automated detection of this illness will reduce the occurrence of outbreaks and facilitate the digitization of the system. Our primary objective is to identify regions at high risk for dengue fever using limited image data through the utilization of sophisticated machine learning and image processing methods. This work showcases the application of transfer learning algorithms for the timely identification of regions at risk for dengue mosquito infestation, particularly in situations where obtaining early data on dengue outbreaks is challenging. The experiments included images of 2150 dengue-positive data sets and 1440 dengue-negative data sets. We used AI and image classifiers Yolo V4 Tin, Tensor Flow, Google Colab, etc. for the training data set, and the system makes predictions with a 99.63% accuracy rate. Our system has some unique attributes;it not only detects the percentage of dengue probability but also the specific dengue-prone location on the submitted image. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper addresses a late-fusion approach that combines RGB and thermal (long-wave IR) modalities to enhance human detection in indoor environments for robotic perception domains. The study explores multimodal human detection using YOLO series (v5s-6s and v8s-11s models), demonstrating significant improvements in detection accuracy under challenging lighting conditions on a dataset collected by a mobile robot. The use of a Weighted-Mean (WM) as a late-fusion approach demonstrates favorable results over more complex methods such as neural networks or SVM. The WM approach is simple to implement and has a low computational cost. Additionally, it is more interpretable and modular and allows straightforward adjustments to the weights of the YOLO models and thresholds, facilitating adaptation to the target system's specific needs. The experimental results indicate that the implemented late-fusion approach improves the baseline performance in terms of mean average precision.

The dependence on making Voice and Video over Internet Protocol (VVoIP) calls has increased dramatically in recent times. The use of VVoIP applications is not limited to social applications only but extended to business applications. The improvement of VVoIP call quality is one of the most important factors that enhance the spread of VVoIP services. In many cases, the high network traffic prevents the possibility of sending high data rate live video streams as sending high data rate live stream over high-traffic networks causes an increase in the data loss *** this paper, the codec switching techniques used to improve the quality under live networks with high traffic are discussed. In addition, A technique based on background subtraction to improve the quality of VVoIP calls using Python code to detect the moving pixels (foreground) and subtract them from the frame to discard the background is *** proposed technique was tested on large scale live network. The tested parameters impacting the Quality of Service (QoS) were packet loss and delay variation (Jitter). The study based on the comparison of packet loss and Jitter for the three common resolutions 480P, 720P and, 1080P over high traffic network without using background subtraction vs. using background subtraction. The results showed a significant improvement in different rates for each resolution and network condition. © 2024 IEEE.

Social assistive robots usually encompass a great compromise between the advanced perception models that one can use and their computing capabilities. The ideal approaches are always oriented towards low power consumption while maintaining a higher order of responsiveness to the surroundings. Therefore, we present in this paper, an improvement of the follow-me system on ASTRO. In detail, we propose the use of Mediapipe SDK for human detection and tracking, when ASTRO is meant to accompany someone that is walking. A study on the new velocity and distance profiles that the robot keeps from the individuals is presented and we have also evaluated how it affects their perception of being safe. The presented results show that our new approach allows the system to achieve real-time performance by becoming ≈ 9.1× faster, smoothing, and keeping a more natural distance from the user. © 2023 IEEE.

Service robots are undergoing a massification process similar to what happened with personal computers and cell phones a few decades ago. Their ubiquitous coexistence and interaction with humans requires that their representation models of the workspace go beyond metric information used for safe navigation. They are also required to assign semantic meaning to objects and places, i.e. to build semantic maps, in order to understand scenes and engage in human-like interactions. This paper proposes the Semantic MAPping (SMAP) framework to provide a service robot operating in human populated environments with a semantic mapping layer on top of a metric SLAM layer. SMAP is modular, expandable, and efficient enough to run locally on the robot. It has been implemented in Robot Operating System 2 (ROS2) using modular Docker containers. Preliminary experiments with a Pioneer 3-DX mobile robot having a system on module Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier demonstrated its potential for future service robotics applications.
