Modeling of dynamical properties of highly complex and interconnected systems becomes important in different fields of science. When identifying the structure and dynamics of a network of interconnected dynamical systems, including cause-effect relations, there is a tendency to use nonparametric or FIR models of the output error type. In this paper it is shown, and illustrated by some simple examples, that appropriate attention should be given to using flexible noise models, in order to allow consistent identification of the dynamics, while the use of external excitation/probing signals may reduce this need. It is a first step towards using prediction error identification tools to identify the structure of a network.

A trimaran is a multihulled boat consisting of a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls, attached to the main hull with lateral struts. There have been many studies highlighting that a trimaran takes many advantages over other types of hulls especially the roll performance, because of the greater resistance to rolling that the outrigger hulls offer. In order to study the rolling motion of a trimaran, an accurate roll motion model is needed. The rolling motion of a trimaran is inherently nonlinear due to both nonlinearities in the restoring moment and damping moment. This paper presents an estimation method to predict the linear and nonlinear roll damping parameters based on free roll decay experiments of a trimaran, whose outrigger hulls are movable both along the longitudinal and transverse direction. The estimation method is based on least square support vector regression (LS-SVR) theory. In order to verify the performance of this new estimation method, the least square (LS) estimation method is also applied to identify the parameters. Both methods show satisfying performances, however models generated by LS-SVR shows less accumulated errors than models generated by LS.

The separation principle is the statement that under suitable conditions the design of stochastic control can be divided into two separate problems, one of optimal control with state information and one of filtering. The literature over the past 50 years contains several derivations where subtle difficulties are overlooked and inadmissible shortcuts taken. Other contributions that have established the separation principle under various hypotheses require considerable mathematical sophistication, which makes the ideas difficult to include in standard textbooks. The contribution of the present work is a new set of conditions that are in line with basic engineering thinking and ensure that the separation principle holds. The feedback system is required to be well-posed in the sense that it defines a map between sample paths, representing signals rather than stochastic processes per se. This approach allows certain generalizations of the separation theorem to a wide class of feedback laws, models and stochastic noise, including martingales with possible jumps.

Increasing turbine up-time and reducing maintenance costs are key technology drivers for wind turbine operators. Components within wind turbines are subject to considerable stresses due to unpredictable environmental conditions resulting from rapidly changing local dynamics. systems health management has the aim to assess the state-of-health of components within a wind turbine, to estimate remaining life, and to aid in autonomous decision-making to minimize damage. Advanced adaptive contingency control can provide the mechanism to enable safe and efficient turbine operation and provide enabling technology for systems Health Management goals. The work reported herein explores the integration of condition monitoring of wind turbine blades with adaptive controls capable of responding to potentially damaging environmental conditions. Results are demonstrated using a high fidelity simulator of a utility-scale wind turbine.
