Recent studies have shown that a compact underwater vector sensor receiver can perform as an array of scalar sensors. Here we propose a scheme to transmit data via underwater particle velocity channels using a dipole vector sensor. System equations are derived and simulations are presented. This demonstrates the possibility of digital transmission using a vector sensor. ©2010 IEEE.

Communication in acoustic particle velocity channel using vector sensors is recently proposed for the underwater medium. Due to the presence of multiple propagation paths, a mobile receiver collects the transmitted signal with different delays and Doppler shifts. This introduces certain delay and Doppler spreads in particle velocity communication channels. In this paper, these channel spreads are characterized using the zero crossing rates of channel responses in frequency and time domain. Useful expressions for delay and Doppler spreads are derived in terms of the key channel parameters, mean angle of arrivals and angle spreads. Closed-form expressions for the temporal correlations of underwater acoustic particle velocity channels are presented as well. These results are needed for design and performance predication of communication systems in time-varying and frequency-selective underwater particle velocity channels. ©2010 IEEE.

Requirements changes sometimes cause a project to fail. A lot of projects now follow incremental development processes so that new requirements and requirements changes can be incorporated as soon as possible. These processes are called integrated requirements processes, which function to integrate requirements processes with other developmental processes. We have quantitatively and qualitatively investigated the requirements processes of a specific project from beginning to end. Our focus is to clarify the types of necessary requirements based on the components contained within a certain portion of the software architecture. Further, each type reveals its typical requirements processes through its own rationale. This case study is a system to manage the orders and services of a restaurant. In this paper, we introduce the case and categorize its requirements processes based on the components of the system and the qualitative characteristics of ISO-9126. We could identify seven categories of the typical requirements process to be managed and/or controlled. Each category reveals its typical requirements processes and their characteristics. Infrared (IR) sensors are widely used on robotics platforms for measurement purposes. Low-cost small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have drawn broad interests during recent years for their various uses in many applications. This paper introduces a two-stage IR sensor calibration method for the attitude estimation of low-cost UAVs. The first stage is based on ground and flight tuning procedures, which are concluded from experience;the second stage is to use the calibration algorithm with inertial measurement unit (IMU) as the baseline reference. The implementation and optimization of the proposed algorithm is described and explained in detail. The experimental flight results are compared and discussed in the end.

Google has recently released the video compression format VP8 to the open source community. This new compression format competes against the existing H.264 video standard developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) in collaboration with the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). This paper compares these two video coding standards in terms of video bit rate-distortion (quality) performance and the video network traffic variability with different long video sequences. We find that VP8 presently does not fulfill its promise to achieve twice the quality at half the bandwidth compared to H.264. The rate-distortion (RD) performance of VP8 is rather slightly below the RD performance of H.264. On the positive side, in contrast to H.264, VP8 has no license fees.

Tremor constitutes the most common motor disorder, and poses a functional problem to a large number of patients. Despite of the considerable experience in tremor management, current treatment based on drugs or surgery does not attain an effective attenuation in 25 % of patients, motivating the need for research in new therapeutic alternatives. In this context, this paper presents the concept design, development, and preliminary validation of a soft wearable robot for tremor assessment and suppression. The TREMOR neurorobot comprises a Brain Neural computer Interface that monitors the whole neuromusculoskeletal system, aiming at characterizing both voluntary movement and tremor, and a Functional electrical Stimulation system that compensates for tremulous movements without impeding the user perform functional tasks. First results demonstrate the performance of the TREMOR neurorobot as a novel means of assessing and attenuating pathological tremors.

A novel noncoherent BPSK demodulator is presented for wirelessly-powered biomedical implants. The received data are detected based on rising or falling edge of the digitized carrier, while all components of the circuit are independent of the carrier frequency. Besides simplicity and ultra low-power consumption, the proposed demodulator benefits from an outstanding data-rate-to-carrier-frequency ratio of 100%. Thus, it can easily achieve high data rates with lower carrier frequencies, which is desirable in implantable biomedical applications such as visual prostheses. The circuit is designed and simulated in a 0.18-μm standard CMOS technology and merely consumes 119-μW@1.8 V at a data rate of 10 Mbps. The proposed idea is also supported by experimental results of a proof-of-concept prototype.

This paper deals with the problem of designing a distributed fault detection and isolation methodology for nonlinear discrete-time dynamical systems that are modelled as the interconnection of several subsystems. The subsystems are allowed to overlap, thus sharing some state components. For each subsystem, a Local Fault Diagnoser is designed, based on the measured local state of the subsystem as well as the transmitted variables of neighboring states that define the subsystem interconnections. The local diagnostic decision is made on the basis of the knowledge of the local subsystem dynamic model and of an adaptive approximation of the interconnection with neighboring subsystems. A Global Fault Diagnoser is introduced to isolate distributed faults that cannot be isolated locally. The use of a specially-designed consensus-based estimator is proposed in order to improve the detectability and isolability of faults affecting variables shared among different subsystems. Simulation results are utilized to illustrate of the effectiveness of the proposed distributed fault diagnosis methodology.

In this paper we show how the decentralized estimation of the spectrum of a network can be used to infer its controllability and observability properties. The proposed approach is applied to networked multi-agent systems whose local interaction rule is based on Laplacian feedback. We provide a decentralized necessary and sufficient condition for observability and controllability based on the estimated eigenvalues. Furthermore we show an example of application of the proposed method and show that the estimated spectrum can also be envisioned as a tool for decentralized formation identification.

The objective of the discrete-time modeling tools is twofold. First, they give an insight into the basic ideas of discrete-time modeling of dc-dc converters for university students and interested power electronics specialists. Second, as it is being presented below, the interactive calculation tools facilitate the fast and simple model-development in WEB browser after entering the basic circuit and load parameters. This feature can especially be useful for the practicing design engineers, since without long calculations with matrix functions the linearized discrete-time system model is immediately and automatically developed in both mathematical form (state-space equations and transfer functions in the Z domain) and also in graphical form (pole-zero map and bode plot). © 2010 IEEE.
