This paper describes a wireless system to monitor urinary bladder pressure comprising an implantable device with an external receiver and wireless battery charger. The device is intended to be implanted within the bladder wall, sealed behind the urothelial lining. This location is protected from the urine stream, thus avoiding mineral encrustation and stone formation, and is suitable to measure intravesical pressure in chronic applications. The implant is dimensionally designed to gain access to the bladder using conventional urological tools, e.g. a cystoscope. The active circuit implant features a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), rechargeable battery and wireless telemetry. Inductive charging, novel power management schemes and innovative packaging allow this device to be inserted through the urethra, implanted within the bladder wall, and operate for a lifetime of up to 10years.

With the emerging many-core paradigm, parallel programming must extend beyond its traditional realm of scientific applications. Converting existing sequential applications as well as developing next-generation software requires assistance from hardware, compilers and runtime systems to exploit parallelism transparently within applications. These systems must decompose applications into tasks that can be executed in parallel and then schedule those tasks to minimize load imbalance. However, many systems lack a priori knowledge about the execution time of all tasks to perform effective load balancing with low scheduling overhead. In this paper, we approach this fundamental problem using machine learning techniques first to generate performance models for all tasks and then applying those models to perform automatic performance prediction across program executions. We also extend an existing scheduling algorithm to use generated task cost estimates for online task partitioning and scheduling. We implement the above techniques in the pR framework, which transparently parallelizes scripts in the popular R language, and evaluate their performance and overhead with both a realworld application and a large number of synthetic representative test scripts. Our experimental results show that our proposed approach significantly improves task partitioning and scheduling, with maximum improvements of 21.8%, 40.3% and 22.1% and average improvements of 15.9%, 16.9% and 4.2% for LMM (a real R application) and synthetic test cases with independent and dependent tasks, respectively. © 2009 IEEE.

The increasing popularity of user-generated content (UGC) requires effective annotation techniques in order to facilitate precise content search and retrieval. In this paper, we propose a new approach for the semantic annotation of personal video content, taking advantage of user-contributed tags available in an image folksonomy. Video shots and folksonomy images are first represented by a semantic vector. Next, the semantic vectors are used to measure the semantic similarity between each video shot and the folksonomy images. Tags assigned to semantically similar folksonomy images are then used to annotate the video shots. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed annotation method, experiments were performed with video sequences retrieved from YouTube and images downloaded from Flickr. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is able to successfully annotate personal video content with user-contributed tags retrieved from an image folksonomy. In addition, the size of our tag vocabulary is significantly higher than the size of the tag vocabulary used by conventional annotation methods.

The development of IT has changed not only computer techniques, but also human life and the environment. It provides us with more and more chances to interact with computers. While we feel much unease while communicating with computers, from device-centered automatic solutions, human emotion are considered as an intelligent solution has been investigated continuously. Skillfully dealing with emotions is important in realizing more natural communication between computers and human being. According to this idea, the importance of emotional technology has been raised. For investigating human emotion accurately, however a technique that is able to recognize data comprehensively, including various and complex user context data, the condition of the user space, and changes to this space, are in demand. Additionally, research on sensors which recognize various environments and studies of reasoning algorithms are necessary. In particular, research related to standard platforms and storage techniques for the recognition, reasoning, expression, and similar areas are necessary for extracting different personal attributes of variables such as gender, age, birth area, and race. This paper outlines the service platform design for affective lighting system that can determine the emotional condition of a user and supply light adequate to it after adaptively recognizing a user's physiological response as well as the space in which a user is active.

Handheld devices are easily lost because of their small sizes and high mobility. Personal data like addresses and telephone numbers stored in the devices are revealed when the devices are lost or used by unauthorized persons. This research proposes a novel approach for handheld data protection by using handheld usage context matching. The proposed system consists of five components: (i) usage data gathering, (ii) usage data preparation, (iii) usage pattern discovery, (iv) usage pattern analysis and visualization, and (v) usage pattern applications. Handheld usage context data is collected before applying this method. The usage context is then used to check device usage. When an unusual usage context such as an unlawful user trying to access the handheld data is detected, the device will automatically lock itself down until an action, like entering a password, is taken. Experimental results show this method is effective and convenient for mobile data protection. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel load variation compensation algorithm in a sensor-less BLDC motor drive for a reciprocating compressor. Periodic load variation of a reciprocating compressor leads to commutation position error and instantaneous speed variation and causes large peak currents. The major concept of this study includes tracking the pattern of load torque and controlling the motor input voltage by the commutation point and PWM depending on the tracked load torque. The suggested method can reduce the cost because this method does not require additional current sensing or voltage comparison circuit. The utility of the suggested algorithm was confirmed by simulation and experimental results of a sensor-less BLDC motor drive.

This paper analyses the relationship between the signal delay and the fractional dynamics. It is shown that some experimental signals spectra are approximated by trendlines. Based on the slope of these trendlines the fractional or integer order behavior is determined. For the pseudo phase plane reconstruction of each signal, the time delays are calculated through the fractal dimension, as an alternative to the mutual information that is often used. The slopes of the trendlines spectra reveal a relationship with the fractal dimension of the pseudo phase plane and the corresponding time lag. © 2008 Lavoisier, Paris.

The RFID framework constructed by Reader, Transponder and Middleware system forms a new construction of future production line automation, material management and logistic industry. The EPC (Electronic Product Code) Network, advocated by international organization, EPCglobal Inc., is the standard technology of RFID application. This paper proposes a cross layer design that applies an intelligent mobile purchasing system by combining RFID smart phone at Physical layer, transferring the RFID code into EPC Network at Media Access Control Layer, gathering the EPC Domain Information at Application Layer and establishing the secure EPC network framework with Product of Authority Server (PAS) network environment at Application Layer. By using the cross-layer approach, user can purchase through the smart phone with RFID Reader. Content Web Server and ODS Server are responsible for recording the commodity information by EPC Code. The commodity will be directly sent to user's home through the Object Tracing Function of Secure EPC Network.
