A MIMO (multi-input multi-output) radar system, unlike a standard phased-array radar, can choose freely the probing signals transmitted via its antennas to maximize the power around the locations of the targets of interest, or more generally to approximate a given transmit beampattern, and also to minimize the cross-correlation of the signals reflected back to the radar by the targets of interest. In this paper, we show how the above desirable features can be achieved by designing the covariance matrix of the probing signal vector transmitted by the radar. Moreover, in a numerical study, we show that the proper choice of the probing signals can significantly improve the performance of adaptive MIMO radar techniques. Additionally, we demonstrate the advantages of several MIMO transmit beampattern designs, including a beampattern matching design and a minimum sidelobe beampattern design, over their phased-array counterparts.

This paper takes a System of systems (SoS) approach to the realization of machine intelligence. Random differences are learned by the system, generalized, and made available for subsequent replay in design transformations. It is empirically demonstrated that cross-domain symmetries can play a major role in design generation in particular and in the design of SoSs in general. The fundamental theory of randomization is the science, which underpins the practice. The approach is illustrated by an example of the design of a refrigeration system. In this paper, a direct sequence (DS) time hopping (TH) ultra wideband (UWB) communications system, denoted as DS-TH-UWB is introduced and analyzed. This is a hybrid technique combining the conventional time hoping and direct sequence techniques. The system is analyzed in terms of the signal-to-noise plus interference ratio (SNIR) and bit error rate (BER) performance. In particular, we provide analytical expressions for the SNIR and BER as a function of several system parameters. The performance of the proposed system is compared with other techniques. Furthermore, the impact of diversity on the performance is demonstrated. Numerical results indicate that the BER performance of the DS-TH-UWB system is superior to the other techniques and can be improved significantly with the use of diversity.

This paper addresses methodic implementation of a credible ISHM capability for elements of Constellation systems. ISHM capability must be implemented by a combination of on-board and ground elements, each contributing to determining the health of systems in the most effective manner. Implementation of ISHM capability must evolve continuously to reach higher and higher levels of functional capability. The implication is that a sustainable approach must be defined in order to accomplish a believable capability. This paper describes the methodology, the elements, and the technology to implement ISHM capability throughout the life cycle of elements of Constellation systems, reaching beyond individual elements that might have a limited life while the constellation moves on.
