The liquid-crystal spatial light modulators (SLMs), are proving to be an important tool for research aimed at emulation of atmospheric turbulence. Emulating turbulence is necessary for testing the performance of adaptive-optics system in a controlled environment. SLMs have the ability to compensate for hundreds of waves of aberration through the use of modulo 2π operation. Thus, a device with only slightly more than one wave of phase stroke can emulate large phase of strokes. Optical modulation is not directly dependent on the back-plane used, but instead on the liquid-crystal and the liquid-crystal layer thickness, the same backplane can be used for many application. This modular design makes SLMs versatile across a wide range of technologies such as optical correlators, beamsteerers, optical trapping, and many more.

In this work, we present an event-based simulator for wireless networks using the Java programming language. Special focus has been placed on scalability and modularity of the implementation. Indeed, the new test-bed can support easily up to 10000 nodes;at the same time the different components interact with each other with well-defined interfaces permitting separate and independent modification. Even though the simulator can be used for any ad hoc wireless network, we have concentrated on the more energy-limited and constrained sensor networks. The supported physical model includes the use of directional antennas, enabling the switching of the antennas' lobe at will and the finding of direction of arrival (DoA) of the signal. Two variants of Aloha and one CSMA are the major MAC protocols implemented. At the network layer, emphasis was given on SPEED [1] and its enhancements. Finally, the user is provided with a configuration file to set its inputs, an excel output file holding all the statistics of the simulation and an interactive GUI showing the flow of information across the sensor nodes. Finally, the simulator was tested in terms of speed and memory demands, and the results of our simulations were compared against those of other research groups.

Metal Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors fabricated using compound semiconductor materials have important applications in high-speed/low-noise communication systems. However, their integration densities are low compared to silicon technologies, and it is difficult to combine them with conventional CMOS for single-chip, mixed-signal circuit applications. In this paper we describe how silicon-on-insulator MESFETs can be fabricated alongside conventional MOSFETs using a commercially available silicon-on-insulator foundry. The process flow for the integrated MOSFETS and MESFETs is presented. Measurements from MESFETs fabricated using a commercial foundry demonstrate good depletion-mode device operation. The measured data confirms a square-law behavior for the saturated drain current, which can be reproduced using readily available MESFET models for Spice circuit simulation. The Spice model is applied to a simple differential-pair amplifier and the modeled results compared to measured data.

With advances in computer technology and digital human modeling methodology, it is possible to predict risks of potential injuries during manufacturing design prior to production, and make proactive ergonomic design for manufacturing assembly workstations involving human-machine interfaces. However, the productivity of manufacturing systems may be decreased, and this negative impact is difficult to evaluate in experimental and manufacturing environments. This research focuses on productivity issue for an automotive assembly workstation involving a lift assist device. To evaluate the productivity of the assembly workstation interfered by proactive ergonomic design, a prescriptive model of the automotive assembly system is developed and simulated with ProModel. This model and its simulation can not only evaluate the productivity, but also determine the maximum conveyor speed. Furthermore, this methodology using ProModel simulation to evaluate productivity and utilization described in this paper can be extended to evaluating other human-machine systems with dynamic, stochastic, and discrete-event characteristics

Since IEC 61499 has reached the state of an International Standard and a substantial body of research results exists the question of the authors as main intention for this paper was: Do the models of IEC 61499 solve all problems when thinking of usability and interoperability in heterogeneous system environments? In this paper, a method to reduce the power consumption of low-power multipliers is proposed. A decision logic module decides about complementing the input before sending it to the multiplier core. The decision is based on minimizing the switching activity and hence the power consumption. The decision logic proposed in this work, unlike the conventional dynamic decision logic modules, uses a small look up table to make its decisions statically once for all the possible combinations on new input and old input. This feature has lead to the reduction of the power, delay, and complexity of the logic compared to its predecessors while the power saving is negligibly reduced

One of many fiber non-linear effects is a four-wave mixing (FWM) phenomenon that is resonant when phase matching condition is satisfied. It only occurs for particular combinations of fiber dispersion and signal frequencies. In particular, phase matching is achieved for signals with very similar frequencies propagating near the zero dispersion wavelength of the fiber. This paper proposes optical wavelength conversion based on FWM assisted by Raman amplification. The conversion bandwidth extends to 125nm, the widest yet reported for wavelength conversion using highly non-linear fiber (HNLF) irrespective to the conversion efficiency value. The 1R property defined when conversion efficiency (CE) is positive was found to cover an area of 19.5nm

This paper describes design and verification of a wireless-interface SoC (system-on-a-chip) for a wireless battery-less mouse with short-range data-communication capability. The SoC comprises an RF transmitter and microcontroller. The SoC, which is powered by an electric generator that exploits gyration energy by dragging the mouse, was fabricated using a TSMC 0.18-um CMOS process. The features of the SoC are the adoption of a simple FSK modulation scheme, single-end configuration on the RF transmitter, and specific microcontroller design for mouse operation. We verified that the RF transmitter can make data communication within a 1-m range at 2.17 mW, and the microcontroller consumes 0.03 mW at 1 MHz, which exhibits that the total power consumption is 2.2 mW. This is sufficiently low for the SoC to operate with energy harvesting.
