The inherent difficulty in supporting human usability in large control systems-such as building environmental and security systems-derives from the large diversity of components and users within each domain. Each system is different, with different types and organizations of devices;each user is different, and takes different roles;each task a user performs varies with the situation. As a result, applying traditional methods of interface design to these systems is insufficient. Designers end up handcrafting each diagram required by each type of user, the effort needed to add new functionality quickly bloats, and users end up juggling multiple disparate applications. We have begun to deploy a tool called DIG (Dynamic Interaction Generation) that addresses this difficulty. DIG uses models of domain, task, and presentation knowledge to automatically design and present interfaces specialized to a user's current role and task, the current situation, and the capabilities of the current display hardware. In this demonstration, DIG will convert a real-life building management configuration into a dynamic interface that building managers can operate using either a standard PC or a Palm Pilot. Molybdenum trioxide - tungsten trioxide (MoO3-WO3) binary metal oxide thin films have been prepared by the sol-gel process. The films were deposited using the spin coating technique onto alumina substrates with interdigital electrodes and single crystal silicon substrates for electrical and micro characterization. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed MoO3-WO3 film morphology composed of MoO3 needle like grains and WO3 spherical grains when annealed at 450°C. The films exhibited selective gas sensing characteristics' at an operating temperature of 300°C towards nitrogen dioxide (NO2). © 2000 IEEE.

A new approach for tracking mobiles in a multipath environment is presented. In this paper, we introduce the local scattering model into the tracking algorithm, which utilizes the linear approximation model, to improve the performance of DOA estimate in a multipath environment. The point of our method is to estimate the DO As and the angular velocities of the mobiles simultaneously by minimizing a cost function, which is consist of the observed data. Moreover, the cost function takes into account of the scattering factor to cope with the multipath signals. The proposed method can estimate the DOA precisely without increasing much computation load. The efficiency of the method is shown through simulation results.

Wallace-tree compressor style has been widely recognized as one of the most effective implementation schemes for arithmetic computation sin VLSI design. However, the scheme has been applied only in a rather restrictive way, that is, for implementing fast multipliers and for generating fixed structures without considering the characteristic of the input signals. The contributions of our work are (1) to extend the applicability of the Wallace scheme to any arithmetic circuit which consists of additions/substractions/multiplications globally (instead of applying it to each operation) to produce a globally efficient architecture of the circuit; (2) to optimize the timing of the circuit for uneven signal arrival profiles; (Specifically, we present an efficient algorithm for generating a delay-optimal (bit-level) carry-save addition structure of an arithmetic circuit.) (3) to provide a comprehensive analysis of the switching activity of a (bit-level) carry-save addition structure, and based on which we derive an effective algorithm for synthesizing low power circuits. Putting these arithmetic optimization solutions together, a circuit designer will be able to fully understand the synthesis of arithmetic circuit based on the bit-level carry-save addition.

The coupling of InAs QDs emission to the two dimensional photonic crystal defect cavity has been demonstrated for the first time and a narrow filtered emission linewidth could be observed. We describe the emission from 2D photonic crystals that contain an InAs QDs active layer. The epitaxial layers were grown on [001] GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy.

The use of forward error-control (FEC) coding, possibly in conjunction with passive-error recovery techniques, has emerged as a promising approach for real-time video transport over ATM networks for cell loss recovery and/or bit error correction, such as might be required for wireless links. Although FEC provides cell-loss recovery, through its erasure correcting capabilities, it also introduces transmission overhead which can possibly cause additional cell losses. A joint source-channel coding methodology is described to maximize the number of video sources multiplexed at a given quality of service (QoS), measured in terms of overall reproduced video quality. The transport channel is modeled as a block interference channel (BIC) and the multiplexer as a single server, deterministic service, finite buffer supporting N users. Based upon an information-theoretic characterization of the BIC and large deviation bounds on the buffer overflow probability, we describe a methodology that provides theoretically achievable upper limits on the number of sources multiplexed at a given level of performance. Performance of a specific coding technique using an MPEG-2 source encoder and interlaced non-binary Reed-Solomon (RS) channel codes is illustrated and shown to approach the information-theoretic predictions with increasing levels of complexity.

TRANSCOM's System for Managing Incidents and Traffic (TRANSMIT) is a traffic surveillance and incident detection system that is based on traffic probes equipped with the E-ZPass electronic toll collection tags. The TRANSMIT system has been initially installed on a 22-mi roadway length on the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey and the New York State Thruway in New York State. Currently, it is being expanded to more than 200 roadway miles in the metropolitan area. The evaluation has been carried out to assess its communication system performance, its incident detection capability, and the traffic-flow parameters estimation, and to identify its current and potential benefits. The TRANSMIT communication system exhibited excellent performance in terms of the transmission rates system wide, which was found to be near 100%. The TRANSMIT incident detection algorithm performed very favorably in comparison to the results of the best incident detection algorithms reported in the literature. The link travel time estimates were found to be within the 95% confidence interval with the exception of the link across the Tappan Zee Bridge, where a spread spectrum radio was installed. The system offers a unique opportunity for researchers to collect travel-time data in real time, and direct measurements of the space mean speed, as well as incident detection related data. The TRANSMIT system has the potential to collect origin - destination data if it is integrated into the metropolitan transportation network infrastructure.

An analytical averaged equivalent circuit model is derived revealing how dominant loss mechanisms vary with power converter operating point in a PWM converter. The model is based on the operational characteristics of power diodes and IGBTs. Laboratory experiments support the derived model and confirm that IGBT current tailing and diode reverse-recovery are indeed the most critical losses in a PWM converter. These losses are more significant at light load, hence reducing the energy capture of converters used in wind generation.
