The adaptive bootstrap separator has been shown to perform better than the conventional decorrelation detector when used for synchronous code division multiple access (CDMA) channels, or with a one-shot matched filter bank for asynchronous channels when the cross-correlation of the partial sequences is nonsingular. In the later case, however, when the "partial cross-correlation" is singular, the separator weights fail to converge. We propose the use of a soft-limiting decision instead of a hard limiter for controlling the adaptive weights of the separator. We show that the algorithm weights converge, provided that the limiting threshold is not zero or not very large. Due to analytical difficulties, the actual steady state weights are not found, but are shown to exist. Simulation results support these claims. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the adaptive soft limiter bootstrap separator are also found by simulation and compared to the performance of the conventional decorrelator that uses the pseudoinverse of the cross-correlation matrix.

If near magnetic fields measured around a metallic plane are given, by utilizing inverse analysis such as the maximum likelihood estimation(MLE), surface current distribution on the metallic plane can be estimated. Using this estimated surface current distribution, magnetic fields can be predicted by forward analysis directly. However, the estimated surface current usually contains the error due to measurement error and the coefficient matrix defined by the measurement grid and the surface scheme. Such estimation error distribution will yield the predicted error distribution when magnetic fields are predicted. A model source is set up and the magnetic fields around a specific plane of this model were measured. The surface current distribution and its estimation error distribution were calculated. Then the magnetic fields and its prediction errors at about 3.0m from the plane were calculated. The analyzed results of this experimental example showed that if the magnitudes of the measurement error are smaller than those of the maximum measured magnetic field by a factor of 10 -1 , then the maximum magnitudes of the prediction error will be smaller than those of the predicted magnetic fields by a factor of 1/6. Therefore, if accurate magnetic fields at the designated distances are to be required, the prediction error has to be considered.

To achieve faster access time in magneto-optical (MO) recording, direct overwrite (DOW) is critical. In single layer direct overwrite media, it was previously shown that domain width modulation limits the CNR. In this report, date collected with a high speed Kerr microscope system and a MO spin stand show that it is possible to collapse the center of a stripe domain using only low power P-L. If is believed that the thermal gradient shrinks and collapses a domain. The fact that a sufficiently high P-L can collapse a stripe domain in the center suggests that the problem of domain width modulation may be solved by developing a writing scheme which eliminates the thermal interference from P-H. Mark-edge recording may then be possible in single layer DOW media.

The authors have developed a new technique for micron scale resolution cross-sectional imaging of ocular and other biological tissue, called optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT is similar to B-scan ultrasonic imaging, except that image contrast relies on differences in optical rather than acoustic backscattering characteristics of tissue. In contrast to ultrasound and nonlinear optical gating techniques, low-coherence interferometry is used to resolve the position of reflective or optical backscattering sites within a sample. Two-dimensional tomographic images of a thin, optical slice of tissue may be obtained with 10 μm longitudinal and lateral resolution. Optical heterodyne detection and the application of noise-reduction techniques originally developed for optical communication achieve sensitivity to reflected light as small as 10/sup -10/ of the incident optical power. OCT is non-contact, non-invasive, and has superior resolution to conventional clinical ultrasound. Unlike scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and scanning laser tomography, the optical sectioning capability of OCT is not limited by the pupil aperture and ocular aberrations. OCT may be implemented in a compact, low-cost, fiber-optic based interferometer that is easily coupled to existing ophthalmic instrumentation. Here, the authors demonstrate high-speed in vivo OCT imaging in both the anterior and posterior eye, and highlight the system's potential usefulness for the early diagnosis and quantitative monitoring of a variety of ocular diseases and treatments.

A multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) algorithm is implemented with the fully nonlinear six-degree-of-motion simulation rapid-prototyping facility (SRF) VISTA F-16 software simulation tool. The algorithm is composed of a bank of Kalman filters modeled to match particular hypotheses of the real world. Each presumes a single failure in one of the flight-critical actuators, or sensors, and one presumes no failure. For dual failures, a hierarchical structure is used to keep the number of on-line filters to a minimum. The algorithm is demonstrated to be capable of identifying flight-critical aircraft actuator and sensor failures at a low dynamic pressure (20,000 ft, 4 Mach). Research includes single and dual complete failures. Tuning methods for accommodating model mismatch, including addition of discrete dynamics pseudonoise and measurement pseudonoise, are discussed and demonstrated. Scalar residuals within each filter are also examined and characterized for possible use as an additional failure declaration voter. An investigation of algorithm performance off the nominal design conditions is accomplished as a first step towards full flight envelope coverage.

This paper reviews progress in developing a mathematical framework to evaluate the performance of mobile radio links. It takes into account multi-ray multipath fading with Rician or Nakagami probability density, lognormal shadowing and path loss of wanted and interfering transmitters, Additive White Gaussian, man-made burst noise and discontinuous transmission. The method presented here uses Lapiace Transforms of the pdf of the power of each interfering signal. This method is computationally efficient and allows inclusion of a wide range of link aspects. We also show that, in contrast to common belief, it is not realistic to approximate the Rician fading of the wanted signal by a Nakagami model. New results are given for micro-cells along highways. © IEEE.

Rapid Thermal Processing of Shallow Junctions Using Epitaxial CoSi 2 as a Doping Source

The electrical properties of shallow P+/N junctions formed by boron outdiffusion from polycrystalline and epitaxial CoSi2 contacts are discussed. The CoSi2 contacts are grown on (100) Si from a sputtered metal layer by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at 900°C in forming gas. The epitaxial CoSi2 (epi-CoSi2) is made from layers of 15 nm Co / 2 nm Ti, and the polycrystalline material (poly-CoSi2) is made from a 15 nm Co layer with no Ti. Dopant is introduced by ion implantation into the silicide and the P+/N junctions are formed by a second RTA step. Junctions are found to have total leakage current densities as low as 4 nA/cm2 for poly-CoSi2 and 12 nA/cm2 for epi-CoSi2 at -5V and metallurgical junction dept.s of 60 nm beyond silicide/Si interface after 700-800°C annealing.
