Silicon-based ion trap chips can benefit from existing advanced fabrication technologies, such as multi-metal layer techniques for two-dimensional architectures and silicon photonics for the integration of on-chip optical components. However, the scalability of these technologies may be compromised by semiconductor charging, where photogenerated charge carriers produce electric potentials that disrupt ion motion. Inspired by recent studies on charge distribution mechanisms in semiconductors, we developed a silicon-based chip with gold coated on all exposed silicon surfaces. This modification significantly stabilized ion motion compared to a chip without such metallic shielding, a result that underscores the detrimental effects of exposed silicon. With the mitigation of background silicon-induced fields to negligible levels, quantum operations such as sideband cooling and two-ion entangling gates, which were previously infeasible with the unshielded chip, can now be implemented. © 2024, CC BY.

Detecting adversaries in crowdsourcing

Despite its successes in various machine learning and data science tasks, crowdsourcing can be susceptible to attacks from dedicated adversaries. This work investigates the effects of adversaries on crowdsourced classification, under the popular Dawid and Skene model. The adversaries are allowed to deviate arbitrarily from the considered crowdsourcing model, and may potentially cooperate. To address this scenario, we develop an approach that leverages the structure of second-order moments of annotator responses, to identify large numbers of adversaries, and mitigate their impact on the crowdsourcing task. The potential of the proposed approach is empirically demonstrated on synthetic and real crowdsourcing datasets. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The estimation of ejection fraction (EF) is critical to intensive care. Doctors commonly use estimated EF to create plans for ICU patients, and a low EF can indicate ventricular systolic dysfunction, which increases the risk of adverse events including heart failure. Recently, interest has grown in deep learning (DL) instruments that can measure cardiac activity to estimate EF automatically. In particular, the vector embeddings learned by DL-based EF estimation models provide valuable mappings of echocardiograms within latent space, which can be utilized to understand the error patterns of DL-based EF estimators and thus improve these instruments. In this work, we provide those embeddings. To this end we repurpose an R3D transformer, a state-of-the-art deep learning model for Video Action Recognition, to classify whether patients have ventricular dysfunction or not (ejection fraction below or above 50%) using echocardiogram data. Our R3D model achieves a test AUC of 0.916 and a test accuracy of 87.5%, approaching the performance of previous comparable studies with a fraction of the training time. Most importantly, the vector embeddings learned by this model will enable future analysis of the errors of DL-based EF estimators, democratizing the improvement of these instruments. The quality of these embeddings, furthermore, is evidenced by the strong results of the model that learned them.

Parameter Estimation of Parallel Wiener-Hammerstein systems by Decoupling their Volterra Representations ⁎

Nonlinear dynamic systems are often approximated by a Volterra series, which is a generalization of the Taylor series for systems with memory. However, the Volterra series lacks physical interpretation. To take advantage of the Volterra representation while aiming for an interpretable block-oriented model, we establish a link between the Volterra representation and the parallel Wiener-Hammerstein model, based on decoupling of multivariate polynomials. The true link is through a constrained decoupling model with (block-)Toeplitz structure on the factors and sets of identical internal branches. The solution of the modified decoupling problem then reveals directly the parameters of the parallel Wiener-Hammerstein model of the system. However, due to the uniqueness properies of the plain decoupling algorithm, even if the structure is not imposed, the method still leads to the true solution (in the exact case).

Wind energy has evolved as a leading source of renewable energy. The harnessing of maximum wind energy from a wind farm is governed by many factors. One key factor is the optimal layout design of the wind farm. This layout defines the optimal placement of wind turbines within the farm. The sheer complexity of identifying this optimal layout in presence of various technical constraints makes the wind farm micrositing (WFM) an NP-hard optimization problem. The problem is generally solved with nature-inspired algorithms (NIAs) whose performance depends on several parameters. Among these, the algorithm termination condition plays a crucial role since it determines the right amount of time required by the algorithm to converge. In the context of WFM problem, this study proposes several termination criteria while using the genetic algorithm as the test bench. Performance of six termination criteria is empirically evaluated with respect to the quality of solutions produced and the execution time involved. Results indicate that among the various criteria tested, the Running mean and Phi were the best in terms of quality of solution and runtime, respectively.

Wind energy has brought a revolution in the domain of renewable energy, and is gradually replacing the traditional fossil fuels. A major challenge in harnessing maximum wind energy from a wind farm is the efficient placement of turbines within the farm, known as wind farm micrositing (WFM). The problem is classified as an NP-hard problem and therefore optimization algorithms from the domain of evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence have been traditionally employed. The optimal micrositing depends on several key factors, such as land topography, wind speed, wind direction, and grid size. While significant research has been carried out on many of these factors, the study on the impact of grid size on wind power generation has received little attention. This study provides a preliminary analysis on the impact of various unconventional grid sizes such as 11×11, 12×12, up to 15×15 through the use of a genetic algorithm. The performance is measured both in terms of the quality of solution produced as well as the execution time. Results indicate that increase in the grid size has a positive impact on the quality of solution, measured through conversion efficiency. However, the correlation between algorithmic execution time and grid size is almost negligible, as a change in grid size does not affect the execution time of the algorithm.

We introduce a new, fully automatic vertebral instance segmentation method to facilitate the extraction of standard uptake values (SUV) from the medullary cavities of individual vertebral bodies in joint 18 F-fluorothymidine (FLT) PET/CT scans acquired from hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients at 28 days after transplant. Due to dosing considerations, the CT voxels in these scans are characterized by a large 5 mm axial slice thickness which significantly complicates the vertebral body segmentation problem. The key ideas of our method are to first apply an ensemble of U-Nets to obtain a binary mask for the aggregated collection of vertebral bodies as a single object without estimating the intervertebral boundaries, and then leverage the relatively better 4 mm axial slice spacing in the PET data to estimate a "best fit" axial coordinate to approximate the break between each pair of vertebrae. This PET-CT fusion approach results in an approximate vertebral body segmentation where each estimated intervertebral boundary is, by construction, restricted to lie in a single axial plane. However, because the FLT uptake is well localized within the medullary cavities, our results show that this approximate segmentation is sufficiently accurate to enable FLT SUV data to be isolated for individual vertebral bodies. Compared to traditional methods for assessing engraftment based on single aspirate biopsies, this new technique has potential to facilitate a significantly more comprehensive assessment of the medullary compartment by providing fully automated SUV data for a plurality of individual bones. © 2023 IEEE.

The primary purpose of this paper is to obtain accurate analytical expressions of the dual active bridge (DAB) converter under the three-degree of freedom control technique. This technique, known as triple phase-shift (TPS) modulation, is utilized for the efficiency optimization of different operating zones and modes of the DAB. Three operating zones and modes have been retained to analyze the converter. Depending on the operating regions and due to the high nonlinearity of the obtained expressions, two optimization techniques have been used. The offline particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is utilized in local optimization (LO) and results in a numerical value. The Lagrange Multiplier (LM) is utilized in global optimization (GO) and results in a closed form expression. In the case of LO, the optimal duty cycles that minimize the power loss are not the optimal values for the minimum root-mean-square (RMS) current or peak current stress. Conversely, in the case of GO, the optimal duty cycles minimize the RMS, peak current and power loss at the same time for the entire power range. Detailed analyses and simulation results from MATLAB/Simulink are given to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2020 IEEE.

Most places in the world have seen rapid increases in the need for power. It is essential to look for alternatives and energy-saving technologies because traditional fossil fuel power plants emit pollution in addition to the electricity they produce. This work considers a multi-generational heating system with the hybrid Electric/Solar Water Heaters (ESWHs) to replace electric water heaters (EWH)by combining the ESWH with an Aluminum reflector. This work experimental discusses the performance of the ESWH and the influence of placing a reflector plate underneath the evacuated tubes in Baghdad-Iraq. A test procedure to heat the water to a specified heating temperature over the whole day period was conducted to analyze the daily power consumption profile of the system. Four operational scenarios have been conducted including the mode;the ESWH as a solar water heater, ESWH as an electric water heater, ESWH without a reflector, and ESWH with a reflector plate. The experimental analysis confirmed that the presented multi-generational heating configuration could contribute to energy sustainably. The developed multi-generational heating system achieved an improvement in annual energy consumption of 15.4% over the hybrid electric/solar water heater and 46.2% over the traditional electrical water heater. © 2023, The Authors.
