Earlier on we introduced model of piece-wise regular fiber optic link, operating in a few-mode regime: laser-based data transmission over large core optical fiber. Presented model is based on piecewise regular representation with general approach of split-step method application. It allows to take into account laser-excited optical signal launching conditions, differential mode delay, differential mode attenuation, higher-order mode chromatic dispersion and mode mixing / power diffusion, occurring due to optical fiber irregularity and fiber optic cable bends / twisting / stress / tension. While optical fiber irregularity can be directly set by protocols of optical fiber outer diameter monitoring system of drawing tower, cable external mechanical influences are simulated via equivalent angular misalignment at the splices of regular spans. Therefore, this work is concerned with issues of selection of this equivalent angular misalignment (EAM). We performed a computational test series under various values of mentioned above EAM under following comparison with experimentally measurements of few-mode optical pulse responses at the output of multimode optical fibers with strong differential mode delay effect. © 2024 SPIE.

This paper presents the electroporation of canine MCT cells by a low voltage in microfluidic system. We examined the electroporation efficiency with pulse conditions and correlated the results from the impedance measurement to the membrane openings. Dielectrophoretic force was applied to position the cell at a desired location. Temporary and permanent electroporation cells was discriminated by using a combination of Yo-Pro-1 and propidium iodide (PI) fluorescent dyes. From the experiment, we determined the appropriate condition for the reversible electroporation of the canine MCT cells to be 15 sets of $2.5 \mathrm{V}_{p}$, 20kHz frequency, and 50-cycle pulses. The condition yielded 50% efficiency for the reversible electroporation. In addition, the area of the cell-membrane pores could be quantitatively examined from the conductance measured without a cell and those with a cell before and after applying electroporation pulses.

Belonging to the family of Bayesian nonparametrics, Gaussian process (GP) based approaches have well-documented merits not only in learning over a rich class of nonlinear functions, but also in quantifying the associated uncertainty. However, most GP methods rely on a single preselected kernel function, which may fall short in characterizing data samples that arrive sequentially in time-critical applications. To enable online kernel adaptation, the present work advocates an incremental ensemble (IE-) GP framework, where an EGP meta-learner employs an ensemble of GP learners, each having a unique kernel belonging to a prescribed kernel dictionary. With each GP expert leveraging the random feature-based approximation to perform online prediction and model update with scalability, the EGP meta-learner capitalizes on data-adaptive weights to synthesize the per-expert predictions. Further, the novel IE-GP is generalized to accommodate time-varying functions by modeling structured dynamics at the EGP meta-learner and within each GP learner. To benchmark the performance of IE-GP and its dynamic variant in the adversarial setting where the modeling assumptions are violated, rigorous performance analysis has been conducted via the notion of regret, as the norm in online convex optimization. Last but not the least, online unsupervised learning for dimensionality reduction is explored under the novel IE-GP framework. This paper deals with the problem of deciding which inputs or parameters in a dynamic model have the greatest impact on the state or output of a linear system. In over-parameterized models or Multi-Agent systems (MAS), a sensitivity analysis tool would allow for reduced representations of the same system or to decide which agents should be monitored. The proposed approach consists in constructing the exact reachable set for a linear system (uncertain in the case of parameter sensitivity) and projecting onto the desired coordinates associated with the state or output in question. Given the exact representation, under mild assumptions, sensitivity values are optimal for the proposed functions, although others can be specified using the same sets. Illustrative examples are presented in order to provide insights on the proposed method. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Many assumptions in the federated learning literature present a best-case scenario that can not be satisfied in most real-world applications. An asynchronous setting reflects the realistic environment in which federated learning methods must be able to operate reliably. Besides varying amounts of non-IID data at participants, the asynchronous setting models heterogeneous client participation due to available computational power and battery constraints and also accounts for delayed communications between clients and the server. To reduce the communication overhead associated with asynchronous online federated learning (ASO-Fed), we use the principles of partial-sharing-based communication. In this manner, we reduce the communication load of the participants and, therefore, render participation in the learning task more accessible. We prove the convergence of the proposed ASO-Fed and provide simulations to analyze its behavior further. The simulations reveal that, in the asynchronous setting, it is possible to achieve the same convergence as the federated stochastic gradient (Online-FedSGD) while reducing the communication tenfold. © 2021, CC BY.

A geometrical method is used for the analysis of stochastic processes in plasma turbulence. Distances between thermodynamic states can be computed according the thermodynamic length methodology which allows the use of a Riemannian metric on the phase space. A geometric methodology is suitable in order to understand stochastic processes involved in e.g. order-disorder transition, where a sudden increase in distance is expected. Gyrokinetic simulations of Ion-Temperature-Gradient (ITG) mode driven turbulence in the core-region of the stellarator W7-X, with realistic quasi-isodynamic topologies are considered. In gyrokinetic plasma turbulence simulations avalanches, e.g. of heat and particles, are often found and in this work a novel method for detection is investigated. This new method combines the Singular Spectrum Analysis algorithm and Hierarchical Clustering such that the gyrokinetic simulation time series is decomposed into a part of useful physical information and noise. The informative component of the time series is used for the calculation of the Hurst exponent, the Information Length and the Dynamic Time. Automotive Simulation is a potentially cost-effective strategy to identify and test corner case scenarios in automotive perception. Recent work has shown a significant shift in creating realistic synthetic data for road traffic scenarios using a video graphics engine. However, a gap exists in modeling realistic optical aberrations associated with cameras in automotive simulation. This paper builds on the concept from existing literature to model optical degradations in simulated environments using the Python-based ray-tracing library KrakenOS. As a novel pipeline, we degrade automotive fisheye simulation using an optical doublet with +/-2◦ Field of View(FOV), introducing realistic optical artifacts into two simulation images from SynWoodscape and Parallel Domain Woodscape. We evaluate KrakenOS by calculating the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), which averaged around 0.023 across the RGB light spectrum compared to Ansys Zemax OpticStudio, an industrial benchmark for optical design and simulation. Lastly, we measure the image sharpness of the degraded simulation using the ISO12233:2023 Slanted Edge Method and show how both qualitative and measured results indicate the extent of the spatial variation in image sharpness from the periphery to the center of the degradations. © 2025, CC BY.

The field of electrical energy is moving through many rapid changes and continuous development, especially with the huge boom in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and the presence of renewable energy systems (RESs). Simultaneously with this development, it was necessary to have energy storage systems such as super capacitors and batteries. This necessity increased with sudden changes in climate or loads that affect the output of generation systems such as solar and wind energy systems. The main goal of this study is to focus on supercapacitors as a future solution with high reliability. It studies all the various factors and operational modes such as the principle of operation, installation, types and modeling of supercapacitors. The study also focused on the employment of supercapacitors in diverse applications, especially in microgrids with their various systems including control and energy management strategies for these systems and investigating the integration between AI, supercapacitors and microgrids and the outcome of this integration. Besides, this research intends to a proposal for a hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) suitable for different loads, including solar cells as main source with supercapacitors and batteries. In addition, it proposes the energy management system (EMS) as well as appropriate control system, to solve the problems of utilities and microgrids and meet the power demand of loads for different operating conditions. © 2025 The Authors

Communication-efficient online federated learning framework for nonlinear regression

Federated learning (FL) literature typically assumes that each client has a fixed amount of data, which is unrealistic in many practical applications. Some recent works introduced a framework for online FL (Online-Fed) wherein clients perform model learning on streaming data and communicate the model to the server;however, they do not address the associated communication overhead. As a solution, this paper presents a partial-sharing-based online federated learning framework (PSO-Fed) that enables clients to update their local models using continuous streaming data and share only portions of those updated models with the server. During a global iteration of PSO-Fed, non-participant clients have the privilege to update their local models with new data. Here, we consider a global task of kernel regression, where clients use a random Fourier features-based kernel LMS on their data for local learning. We examine the mean convergence of the PSO-Fed for kernel regression. Experimental results show that PSO-Fed can achieve competitive performance with a significantly lower communication overhead than Online-Fed. © 2021, CC BY.

Within the realm of atomically thin semiconductors, CrSBr stands out uniquely as it harbors quasi-one-dimensional magnetic excitons in both its bulk and monolayer forms. Despite its fundamental significance, the precise exciton formation, relaxation and decay dynamics remained elusive. While terahertz polarization probing offers a direct avenue for tracking excitons, the resulting far-field signal can be affected by signals originating beyond the lateral dimensions of the sample. Here, we combine terahertz polarization spectroscopy with near-field microscopy to unveil the sub-picosecond decay dynamics of paramagnetic excitons in a CrSBr monolayer, which is faster by a factor of 30 than its bulk counterpart. Our analysis also unravels low-energy fingerprints of bound and unbound electron-hole pairs in bulk and gives access to the non-equilibrium dielectric function of the monolayer. These findings provide direct insight into the ultrafast dielectric response of quasi-one-dimensional excitons in CrSBr, with potential applications in quantum devices leveraging ultrathin van der Waals magnets.
