The diagnosis of many diseases involves invasive detection methods, which are both painful and stressing for patients. In the last decades, the ever-growing development in electronic nose (E-Nose) technology made them great candidates for non-invasive disease detection methods. Such devices mimic the human olfactory system through a set of sensors which produce signals that can be associated with diseases. Recently, a class of low-cost and innovative ionogel sensors, developed by our group demonstrated their full applicability in E-Nose systems, opening a new and promising approach to the field. However, the operation of such sensor needs a background calibration phase which relies on the correct characterization and parameterization of the corresponding electrical sensor *** paper proposes a model characterization methodology based on a set of frequency responses acquisitions of the sensor, under several humidity conditions. To obtain a flexible acquisition tool capable of acquiring accurate results, an analog front-end (AFE) circuit to interface with the interdigitated electrode (IDE) sensors is presented. Such AFE circuit is fully implemented using a programmable system-on-a-chip (PSoC), helping to reduce system size and cost. Lastly, a comparison between the electrical model and data acquired with the proposed system is presented.

Efficient noise mitigation technique for quantum computing

Quantum computers have enabled solving problems beyond the current computers' capabilities. However, this requires handling noise arising from unwanted interactions in these systems. Several protocols have been proposed to address efficient and accurate quantum noise profiling and mitigation. In this work, we propose a novel protocol that efficiently estimates the average output of a noisy quantum device to be used for quantum noise mitigation. The multi-qubit system average behavior is approximated as a special form of a Pauli Channel where Clifford gates are used to estimate the average output for circuits of different dept.s. The characterized Pauli channel error rates, and state preparation and measurement errors are then used to construct the outputs for different dept.s thereby eliminating the need for large simulations and enabling efficient mitigation. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed protocol on four IBM Q 5-qubit quantum devices. Our method demonstrates improved accuracy with efficient noise characterization. We report up to 88% and 69% improvement for the proposed approach compared to the unmitigated, and pure measurement error mitigation approaches, respectively. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Low-rank tensor recovery for Jacobian-based Volterra identification of parallel Wiener-Hammerstein systems

We consider the problem of identifying a parallel Wiener-Hammerstein structure from Volterra kernels. Methods based on Volterra kernels typically resort to coupled tensor decompositions of the kernels. However, in the case of parallel Wiener-Hammerstein systems, such methods require nontrivial constraints on the factors of the decompositions. In this paper, we propose an entirely different approach: by using special sampling (operating) points for the Jacobian of the nonlinear map from past inputs to the output, we can show that the Jacobian matrix becomes a linear projection of a tensor whose rank is equal to the number of branches. This representation allows us to solve the identification problem as a tensor recovery problem.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes seizures, affecting nearly half a million children in the US alone. In this study, we aimed to use a nonlinear driven method to characterize scalp EEG recordings of pediatric epilepsy patients (PE: $\mathrm{n}=7$ ) compared to pediatric control subjects (PC: $\mathrm{n}=7$ ) in a clinical environment. A time-varying approach was used to construct functional connectivity networks (FCNs) of all subjects. Next, the FCNs are mapped into the form of undirected graphs that are subjected to the extraction of graph theory-based features. An unsupervised clustering technique based on K-mean is used to delineate the PE from the PC group. Our findings show a statistically significant difference in the mean FCNs between PC and PE groups $(t(340)=- 15.9899, p < < 0.0001)$ . Performance results showed an accuracy of 92.5% with a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 95.3%. This approach can help improve and validate the early diagnosis of PE by applying non-invasive scalp EEG signals.

In contrast to traditional online videos, live multi-streaming supports real-time social interactions between multiple streamers and viewers, such as donations. However, donation and multi-streaming channel recommendations are challenging due to complicated streamer and viewer relations, asymmetric communications, and the tradeoff between personal interests and group interactions. In this paper, we introduce Multi-Stream Party (MSP) and formulate a new multi-streaming recommendation problem, called Donation and MSP Recommendation (DAMRec). We propose Multi-stream Party Recommender System (MARS) to extract latent features via socio-temporal coupled donation-response tensor factorization for donation and MSP recommendations. Experimental results on Twitch and Douyu manifest that MARS significantly outperforms existing recommenders by at least 38.8% in terms of hit ratio and mean average precision. We report narrowband orthogonally polarized optical RF single sideband generators as well as dual-channel RF equalization, both based on high-Q integrated ring resonators. The devices operate in the optical telecommunications C-band and enable RF operation over a range of either fixed or thermally tunable frequencies. They operate via TE/TM mode birefringence in the resonator. We achieve a very large dynamic tuning range of over 55 dB for both the optical carrier-to-sideband ratio and the dual-channel RF equalization for both the fixed and tunable devices. © 2021, CC BY.

Wind turbines operate at design performance to ensure project financial efficiency, and fairness in the Turbine Supply Agreement and achieve project commitments related to operating permits. Proving turbine performance is only possible through power performance testing, with a complex and rigorous process that complies with IEC standards. This paper evaluates possible impacts on turbine operating efficiency by analyzing data collected through the SCADA system. Due to the complicated implementation process, timing, and cost, the goal of the work is to provide more useful information to make an effective decision to implement a power performance verification. The paper is especially useful for the practical application of turbine performance analysis for the first stage of operation. Even during turbine commissioning, a turnkey contract is obligated to prove the turbine is working properly before taking over certificate and transferring the risk to the project.

The automobile has become an essential part of modern human life, and one of the critical factors that determine a vehicle’s value is its reliability. Engine breakdowns are not only hazardous but also financially burdensome. Early detection of engine failure can help save costs and improve the average lifespan of a car. Traditionally, manual inspection of engine sounds by expert mechanics has been used as an effective approach for the early detection of engine problems. There have been recent attempts to develop sound detection-based methods for the automatic diagnosis of engine problems. However, the majority of these techniques are neither robust nor explainable. These systems act like black boxes, making their decision-making process difficult to *** Learning Classifier System, also known as LCS, is a machine learning technique that operates on a set of rules. It has shown promise in producing robust, explainable, and generalizable solutions for many problem domains. The objective of this work is to develop a novel LCS-based system for the automatic detection of engine problems. The developed system’s decision-making process is interpretable, which is a step toward eXplainable artificial intelligence. Using time domain, frequency domain, and time-frequency domain features, the innovative system’s generalizability is assessed. While the developed system’s robustness is evaluated using noisy sound data collected under various normal and abnormal conditions, The experimental results indicate that the novel approach outperformed conventional state-ofthe-art techniques by 2.6% − 6.0% and achieved the highest performance accuracy of 98.6%. © 2024, The Authors.
