This work examines the characteristic modes and measurement of a circular canonical family (CCF) of ad-hoc array topologies in which element radiators are used independently to deliver both sum and difference beams. We present a mathematical framework for the analysis of radiation characteristics from randomly distributed antenna arrays of the generalized circular topologies. Fourier probabilistic methods (i.e. characteristic function analyses) are applied to derive associated n-th order characteristic functions governing the radiation pattern. Sum and difference pattern behavior is generated using even and odd element distributions. Numerical simulations are performed using both ANSYS HFSS and MATLAB to demonstrate beam steering and examine the modal pattern characteristics. To validate our analytical approach, we include measured results of uniformly distributed array topologies, geometrically constrained to a set of 32 elements. Scanned patterns are provided for the sum-difference modes in both the E and H planes under lossless conditions. These are compared to theoretically-derived pattern behavior. The results demonstrate the utility of the CCF topology in generating radiation modes; because of this, applying the CCF in radar and electronic warfare technology will lead to greater performance such as enhanced target resolution and increased range capabilities.

Successful execution of biomechanical sit-to-stand （STS）task combines a forward thrust phase with an upward extension phase and stable movement termination. We have previously developed a fuzzy dynamic model to analyze the STS task by joining two local linear models, defined at the equilibrium positions, via Gaussian membership functions. The local linear models were obtained from a four-segment biomechanical representation of the human body dynamics in the sagittal plane. Our fuzzy controller model uses an observer to reconstruct velocity data from noisy observation of joint positions. In this study, we propose a reduced order observer with an optimal controller design for the STS task. The fuzzy optimal controller generates feedback and feedforward components of joint torques, whereby the latter are derived from a reference trajectory. Our movement control strategy employing fuzzy reduced order observer with fuzzy controller leads to physiologically tractable simulation of the STS movement with results that are superior to those previously obtained with full order compensators.

A compact, extensible lab network is described that is suitable for implementing multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) and other network protocols for research and instructional purposes. Service provider and customer requirements can be modeled. Freely-available tools were used to test network congestion performance and important limitations to their capabilities were observed. Results also showed that the low-latency network required special attention to clock synchronization between the traffic generator client and server workstations. Used for instruction, students benefited from the hardware-based approach to network design and testing.

Within the Information and Communication technology hype cycle the Internet of Things (IoT) represents a prominent subject, being rich in potentiality as well as in development issues. In this paper, we face the IoT developing process first “in the small” by designing the Smart Objects (SOs, representing the fundamental IoT building blocks) as agents, and after “in the large” by treating the IoT systems as Multi Agent systems (MASs). Indeed, the agent abstraction is a suitable paradigm to instill smartness and autonomy within a single SO and consequently to realize distributed, self-steering and heterogeneous IoT systems. In such directions, the Agent-based COoperating SO (ACOSO) middleware represents a viable solution for the programming, development and management of agent-based SO systems while its performance verification on different IoT networks of different scale has been made through the Omnet++ simulator.

Microgrids equipped with small-scale renewable-energy generation systems and energy storage units offer challenging opportunity from a control point of view. In fact, in order to improve resilience and enable islanded mode, microgrid energy management systems must dynamically manage controllable loads by considering not only matching energy generation and consumption, but also thermal comfort of the occupants. Thermal comfort, which is often neglected or oversimplified, plays a major role in dynamic demand response, especially in front of intermittent behavior of the renewable energy sources. This paper presents a novel control algorithm for joint demand response management and thermal comfort optimization in a microgrid composed of a block of buildings, a photovoltaic array, a wind turbine, and an energy storage unit. In order to address the large-scale nature of the problem, the proposed control strategy adopt a two-level supervisory strategy: at the lower level, each building employs a local controller that processes only local measurements;at the upper level, a centralized unit supervises and updates the three controllers with the aim of minimizing the aggregate energy cost and thermal discomfort of the microgrid. Comparisons with alternative strategies reveal that the proposed supervisory strategy efficiently manages the demand response so as to sensibly improve independence of the microgrid with respect to the main grid, and guarantees at the same time thermal comfort of the occupants.

Sink mobility in WSN is considered to be a challenge for routing the data, as it creates rapid topological changes in the network. Most of the routing protocols available in the literature are prone to high control overhead and are less efficient. An elastic routing technique utilizing overhearing feature, is an efficient protocol with less control overhead for routing the data, from a single static source to a mobile sink. But, when there are multiple static sources, the delivery of data to the mobile sink pose huge delay and high traffic. Here we propose an efficient routing algorithm utilizing the feature of overhearing to route the packets from all the source nodes to the mobile sink. We use a modified version of iterative-1 Steiner tree algorithm with elastic routing, for finding the shortest path to the mobile destination, with minimum control packet overhead. Calculation of Steiner points is dynamic in nature, so as to adapt to the topological changes. The simulation results show that the proposed approach is better in-terms of data rate, energy efficiency and control overhead. Test-bed results indicate that the proposed approach can be used effectively in WSN, where topological changes are frequent.

This paper describes a folded cascode CMOS instrumentation amplifier input stage, which has an increased immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI). The proposed structure uses a source-buffered concept with a replica circuit to achieve a higher EMI immunity over a wide range of frequencies, from 10 MHz to 1 GHz. Circuit simulations illustrate how the proposed folded cascode amplifier reduces susceptibility to EMI even in the presence of large amplitude interferences. Simulation results show that the maximum EMI-induced output offset voltage for the proposed folded cascode amplifier is less than 8 mV over a wide range of frequencies (10 MHz to 1 GHz), when a 3.3 Vpp EMI signal is injected into the non-inverting input; when the amplifier is connected in a voltage-follower configuration. In contrast, the classic folded cascode amplifier generates a maximum input offset voltage of 700 mV at 1 GHz under the same operating conditions.

The authors have created a new color glove which has markers between the fingers and the palm or dorsal area, and have developed methods to eliminate border outlines caused between colored regions to make a natural finger outline extraction system. The authors select 6 colors used for markers and the positions of them. In the elimination process, outlines of marker regions' border are extracted. Elimination regions are created by delating these outlines from 1 pixel to 15 pixels. An image including only border outlines are created by AND operation of an image including only elimination regions and an image including only finger outlines. The authors investigated the relationship between wrist rotation angles and success rate of elimination of border outlines. Success rate of elimination was about 80% or more except when wrist rotation angles were -30, -20, or -10 degrees. The average was 84.6%. Through these experiments, the proposed method has indicated one way to solve the border outline problems with the color glove. Besides, this has created a problem that parts of finger outlines are often eliminated. In the discussion section, the authors show one way to solve this problem. Concerned with this section, the authors conclude that the proposed color glove and method are effective for basic construction of the natural finger outline extraction system with the color glove.

Because program behaviors of database applications depend on the data used, code coverages do not effectively test database applications. Additionally, test coverages for database applications that focus on predicates in Structured Query Language (SQL) queries are not useful if the necessary predicates are omitted. In this paper, we present two new database applications using Plain Pairwise Coverage (PPC) and Selected Pairwise Coverage (SPC) for SQL queries called Plain Pairwise Coverage Testing (PPCT) and Selected Pairwise Coverage Testing (SPCT), respectively. These coverages are based on pairwise testing coverage, which employs selected elements in the SQL SELECT query as parameters. We also implement a coverage calculation tool and conduct case studies on two open source software systems. PPCT and SPCT can detect many faults, which are not detected by existing test methods based on predicates in the query. Furthermore, the case study suggests that SPCT can detect faults more efficiently than PPCT and the costs of SPCT can be further reduced by ignoring records filtered out by the conditions of the query.
