A compact reconfigurable band-notched UWB antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna has a partial ground plane with a rectangular slot to achieve the desired bandwidth for UWB from 3.1GHz to 12GHz. The antenna has a single band-notch frequency which is achieved using a switched U-shaped slot, inserted in the radiating patch. This slot is used to decrease interference with WIMAX applications from 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz. The switching reconfiguration of the proposed antenna is achieved through two ideal switches. Ge peaking n- and p-FinFETs have been demonstrated by adopting neutral beam etching (NBE) and anisotropic neutral beam oxidation (NBO) processes. The irradiation-free NB processes not only suppress surface roughness but also guarantee low defect generation on the etched Ge surface. The fabricated Ge peaking FinFETs possess several unique features: (1) A peaking fin configuration with a 6-nm top-gate formed by an anisotropic NBO process at room temperature. (2) Nearly defect-free three dimensional channel surfaces by NB processes. (3) Ion and G_m improvement by NB processes as compared to that by conventional inductively coupled plasma etching (ICP). (4) Recorded high Ion/Ioff ratio and low subthreshold swing (S.S. ~ 70 mV/dec.) of Ge n-FinFETs. (5) Excellent immunity for short channel effect of Ge FinFETs.

This work proposes an online policy iteration procedure for the synthesis of sub-optimal control laws for uncertain Linear Time Invariant (LTI) Asymptotically Null-Controllable with Bounded Inputs (ANCBI) systems. The proposed policy iteration method relies on: a policy evaluation step with a piecewise quadratic Lyapunov function in both the state and the deadzone functions of the input signals;a policy improvement step which guarantees at the same time close to optimality (exploitation) and persistence of excitation (exploration). The proposed approach guarantees convergence of the trajectory to a neighborhood around the origin. Besides, the trajectories can be made arbitrarily close to the optimal one provided that the rate at which the the value function and the control policy are updated is fast enough. The solution to the inequalities required to hold at each policy evaluation step can be efficiently implemented with semidefinite programming (SDP) solvers. A numerical example illustrates the results.

Real-time remote robotic science operations will be a key part of future planetary exploration missions because the use of robots can reduce operational costs and increase scientific returns. To better understand real-time remote robotic science operations, and to provide practical guidance for improving the design of operations support tools, we conducted in-field observations of a team of 14 scientists remotely operating a planetary rover during a five-day prospecting mission. On the basis of our results, we identify the characteristics of real-time remote robotic science operations. In addition, we discuss the identified challenges, opportunities, and guidelines associated with improving the design of support tools. We expect that our findings will inform future research on robotic operations support tools and future study of additional use cases, including numerous terrestrial field science deployments and a planned 2020 NASA lunar rover mission. © 2016 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. The validation of wireless communications research, whether it is focused on PHY, MAC or higher layers, can be done in several ways, each with its limitations. Simulations tend to be simplified. Equipping wireless labs requires funding and time. Remotely accessible testbeds present a good option to validate research. The existing testbeds have gone a long way in building the infrastructure for managing and operating themselves. Yet, there is still space to improve the administration of resources whether it is nodes, frequency spectrum or storage space. In this work, we present the Collaborative Radio Cloud (CRC), a wireless testbed that enables web/remote access to facilitate research experiments in the field of wireless communications and networks. CRC is built upon the contributions made by current testbeds and incorporates new features to improve the user experience and ameliorate the management of resources. It enables multiple simultaneous users to coexist in the testbed by enforcing an elaborate node isolation policy. Software dedicated to the enforcement of spectrum assignment was developed to further ensure the isolation between concurrent users. A tool that is capable of realizing a desired topology using gain control was developed. CRC also operates a scheduler that optimizes node assignment to maximize testbed utilization. Enhancements to disk image saving are being developed to reduce the required storage. Other than research, CRC targets contributing to the education of wireless communications and networks by providing experiments and a web interface dedicated to students and instructors. © 2016 ACM.

A design of compact size and multi-band composite right-left handed meta-material antennas for wireless applications is presented. The proposed antenna consists of single left handed cell. The series interdigital capacitor and short circuit stub which acts as shunt inductor are considered the main block of the proposed antenna. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at different frequency bands. Because of the nonlinearity of the left handed region of the composite right left handed transmission line, the compactness of the antenna has been achieved. The proposed antenna has compact size (its size is only 28 × 22 mm 2 ). The design represents size reduction of approximately 60 % compared to conventional patch antennas operating at the same frequencies. The antenna is designed, simulated and measured. A good agreement is achieved between the measured and simulated results.

We propose an approach to synthesize control protocols for autonomous systems that account for uncertainties and imperfections in interactions with human operators. As an illustrative example, we consider a scenario involving road network surveillance by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that is controlled remotely by a human operator but also has a certain degree of autonomy. Depending on the type (i.e., probabilistic and/or nondeterministic) of knowledge about the uncertainties and imperfections in the operator- Autonomy interactions, we use abstractions based on Markov- decision processes and augment these models to stochastic two-player games. Our approach enables the synthesis of operator-dependent optimal mission plans for the UAV, highlighting the effects of operator characteristics (e.g., workload. proficiency, and fatigue) 011 UAV mission performance;it can also provide informative feedback (e.g., Pareto curves showing the trade-offs between multiple mission objectives), potentially assisting the operator in decision-making.

Recent technological developments in Unmanned Aerial systems (UAS) have allowed the integration of UAS into the field of marine science. UAS provide a low risk, low cost platform to collect and relay data at various spatial and temporal scales. As an integral part of Ocean Observation systems (OOS), UAS can provide an agile platform for delivering high-bandwidth, high-frequency data between surface sensors, roving sensors (AUVs and other UAS's), OOS hubs, and surface stations. Harnessing this new capability can improve the quality and efficiency of data collection and distribution by OOS, which yields improved data for the adaptive management of marine resources.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious sleep disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. There is a great need to develop an efficient, low-cost OSA detection method. Traditional OSA detection methods are purely data-driven and hence their detection performance greatly depends on the quality and quantity of the sensor data. Several mathematical models of the human cardiorespiratory system exist which can generate different physiological signals that are hard to measure using current sensor technology. In this paper, we propose a new framework for OSA detection in which we fuse the sensor data with the physiological signal data from the cardiorespiratory system models. Multivariate Gaussian processes (GPs) are used to capture and model the physiological signal variations among different individuals. We define the multivariate GP covariance function using the sum of separable kernel functions form and estimate the corresponding hyperparameters by maximizing the GP marginal likelihood function. We detect OSA using the heart rate signal on a window-by-window basis using a likelihood ratio test. We conduct several experiments on both simulated and real data to show the effectiveness of the proposed OSA detection framework. We also compare with other purely data-driven OSA detection methods to demonstrate the advantage of the proposed OSA detection fusion framework.
