Research on flux switching machines (FSMs) has been an attractive topic recently due to tremendous advantages of robust rotor structure, high torque, and high power capability that suits for intense applications. However, most of the investigations are focusing on inner rotor structure which incongruous for direct drive applications. In this paper, the design optimization and performance analysis of 12Slot-14Pole hybrid excitation flux switching machine (HEFSM) with outer-rotor configuration are conducted for in-wheel direct drive electric vehicle (EV). Similar with conventional inner-rotor HEFSMs, two magnetic flux sources of permanent magnet (PM) and field excitation coil (FEC) have extra advantage of variable flux control capability, while the outer-rotor configuration has ability to provide much higher torque and power density suitable for in-wheel EV drives. Based on some design restriction and specification, design refinements are conducted on the initial design machine by using deterministic optimization approach. The final design machine has achieved maximum torque and power density of 335.08Nm and 5.93kW/kg, respectively, slightly better than inner rotor HEFSM and interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) design for EV.

Within active distribution network management, distributed generations, which are contracted by the non-firm connection method, can be directly controlled by the distribution network operator to adjust their power factor and the active power output level. This is called an output curtailment of distributed generation. Although the purpose of the output curtailment is to stably operate the distribution network, it inevitably limits the revenue of distributed generations. Therefore, the need for suitable compensation to the output curtailment is often discussed. As an extension to the discussion, this study proposes the method to determine the suitable bounds of the compensation price for output curtailment. In the proposed method, the suitable bounds of compensation price are obtained from the profit analysis of stakeholders in accordance with the level of the compensation price through optimal power flow technique.

Data deduplication has become a standard component in modern backup systems. In order to understand the fundamental tradeoffs in each of its design choices (such as prefetching and sampling), we disassemble data deduplication into a large N-dimensional parameter space. Each point in the space is of various parameter settings, and performs a tradeoff among backup and restore performance, memory footprint, and storage cost. Existing and potential solutions can be considered as specific points in the space. Then, we propose a general-purpose framework to evaluate various deduplication solutions in the space. Given that no single solution is perfect in all metrics, our goal is to find some reasonable solutions that have sustained backup performance and perform a suitable tradeoff between deduplication ratio, memory footprints, and restore performance. Our findings from extensive experiments using real-world workloads provide a detailed guide to make efficient design decisions according to the desired tradeoff.

The intensive use of social media through mobile devices has leveraged the development of digital diary applications that keep track of social events as well as geotagged multimedia content. In a large crowd where users with cultural diversity perform spatiotemporal activities, such geotagged multimedia content facilitates users' navigation through points of interest (POI) based on their preferences. This work presents a crowdsourced geo-spatial multimedia data aggregation tool that allows users to develop diary chapters relevant to forthcoming users' spatio-temporal activities. Our proposed solution provides users with the ability to add POIs through an authoring environment with multiple dimensions, such as spatio-temporal filters, multimedia categories, and event types. Specific application domains such as emergency situations, leisure trips, journalism, and tourism can take benefit of this technique. This authoring environment also visualizes geo-spatial multimedia content for collocated points of interest (CPOI) with moving users' timelines. We plan to integrate our proposed authoring environment as a proof of concept into our existing large-scale crowdsourcing environment that is envisioned to support millions of users during the Hajj 2015 event.

Thanks to the advent of clock synchronization via the global positioning system (GPS), phasor measurement units (PMUs) collecting both the magnitude and phase angle with higher precision have implications for monitoring performance across the wide area of smart grids. Owing to high PMUs installation costs, developing optimal strategy of PMUs placement is important to monitor the transmission system status in the wide area. To characterize the performance of line outage identification, this paper firstly proposes the statistical model to describe the average identification capability of multiple line outages. Using this model, we develop a global optimal PMUs placement strategy to maximize the average identification capability under the budget of PMUs. Furthermore, a greedy heuristic strategy is developed to bypass the combinatorial search to achieve a sub-optimal solution at a reduced complexity. The proposed methods are used to benchmark the optimal PMU placement solutions for the IEEE 14- and 57-bus systems. The experimental study demonstrates that the proposed techniques successfully select optimal PMU locations, targeting on maximum the average identification capability. The result shows that the proposed PMUs placement strategies improve about 10% location identification performance of multiple line outages when compared to random PMUs placement method.

This paper deals with Gaussian approximations to the posterior probability density function (PDF) in Bayesian nonlinear filtering. In this setting, using sigma-point based approximations to the Kalman filter (KF) recursion is a prominent approach. In the update step, the sigma-point KF approximations are equivalent to performing the statistical linear regression (SLR) of the (nonlinear) measurement function with respect to the prior PDF. In this paper, we indicate that the SLR of the measurement function with respect to the posterior is expected to provide better results than the SLR with respect to the prior. The resulting filter is referred to as the posterior linearisation filter (PLF). In practice, the exact PLF update is intractable but can be efficiently approximated by carrying out iterated SLRs based on sigma-point approximations. On the whole, the resulting filter, the iterated PLF (IPLF), is expected to outperform all sigma-point KF approximations as demonstrated by numerical simulations. © 2014 International Society of Information Fusion.

The problem of adaptively tracking a pre-planned trajectory and rejecting multi-sinusoidal input disturbances with unknown amplitudes, phases and frequencies is addressed and solved for fully-actuated uncertain mechanical systems. We consider the case of disturbances occurring in joint space (adding up with the control torques) as well as the case of cartesian disturbances acting from the external environment. Largely inspired by the work of Chen and Huang [1] on the attitude dynamics of the rigid body, the proposed controller consists of an adaptive internal model unit which estimates in a joint fashion the mismatches in the disturbance frequencies and in the physical parameters. This work is very relevant, e.g., for mechanical systems with flexible appendages where vibrations arising from the flexibility are suppressed by being modeled as exogenous unknown sinusoidal disturbances.

Recent advances in low power networked embedded systems and electrochemical/optical water quality sensors have enabled the generation of low-cost, low-power water quality sensor nodes. These sensor nodes leverage the idea of wireless sensor networks for water quality monitoring in drinking water distribution systems, where large numbers of spatially distributed sensor nodes operate cooperatively to monitor and detect contamination events in a timely manner. However, such approach it is expected to suffer from false alarm errors and missed detection errors due to sensor inaccuracies and modeling uncertainties. This paper aims at developing algorithms for network-wide fusion for processing such inaccurate sensor data in order to minimize detection errors and improve contamination detection probability by correlating imperfect sensor decisions in space and time, taking advantage of the large scale deployment and the drinking water distribution system topology. A simulation example of a simple water distribution system is used to illustrate the proposed methodology and provide intuition through a comparative study.

In this work we present the decision support of the EMBalance platform. EMBalance is a platform for the management of balance disorders in terms of diagnosis, treatment and evolution. The EMBalance platform aims to extend existing but generic and currently uncoupled balance modelling activities leading to a multi-scale and patient-specific balance model, which will be incorporated in a Decision Support System (DSS), towards the early diagnosis, prediction and the efficient treatment planning of balance disorders. The diagnosis part of the decision support system uses various data ranging from demographic characteristics to clinical examinations, auditory and vestibular tests. Currently we present some initial technical choices and indicative results of the decision support system for diagnosing balance disorders, based on data mining techniques and clinical guidelines. © 2015 IEEE.
