Hardware implementation of lossless data compression is important for optimizing the capacity/cost/power of storage devices in data centers, as well as communication channels in high-speed networks. In this work we use the Open Computing Language (OpenCL) to implement high-speed data compression (Gzip) on a field-programmable gate-arrays (FPGA). We show how we make use of a heavily-pipelined custom hardware implementation to achieve the high throughput of ∼3 GB/s with more than 2× compression ratio over standard compression benchmarks. When compared against a highly-tuned CPU implementation, the performance-per-watt of our OpenCL FPGA implementation is 12× better and compression ratio is on-par. Additionally, we compare our implementation to a hand-coded commercial implementation of Gzip to quantify the gap between a high-level language like OpenCL, and a hardware description language like Verilog. OpenCL performance is 5.3% lower than Verilog, and area is 2% more logic and 25% more of the FPGA's available memory resources but the productivity gains are significant. Copyright 2014 ACM.

In this paper, the objective is to obtain an estimate of a particular module embedded in a dynamic network using noisy measurements of the internal variables. This is an extension of the errors-in-variables (EIV) framework to the case of dynamic networks. The consequence of measuring the variables with noise is that the prediction error identification methods no longer result in consistent estimates. The method proposed in this paper is based on a combination of the instrumental variable approach and closed-loop prediction-error identification methods.

The DeSyRe project builds on-demand adaptive, reliable systems-on-Chips. In response to the current semiconductor technology trends thatmake chips becoming less reliable, DeSyRe describes a newgeneration of by design reliable systems, at a reduced power and performance cost. This is achieved through the following main contributions. DeSyRe defines a fault-tolerant system architecture built out of unreliable components, rather than aiming at totally fault-free and hence more costly chips. In addition, DeSyRe systems are on-demand adaptive to various types and densities of faults, as well as to other system constraints and application requirements. For leveraging on-demand adaptation/customization and reliability at reduced cost, a new dynamically reconfigurable substrate is designed and combined with runtime system software support. The above define a generic and repeatable design framework, which is applied to two medical SoCs with high reliability constraints and diverse performance and power requirements. One of the main goals of the DeSyRe project is to increase the availability of SoC components in the presence of permanents faults, caused at manufacturing time or due to device aging. A mix of coarse- and fine-grain reconfigurable hardware substrate is designed to isolate and bypass faulty component parts. The flexibility provided by the DeSyRe reconfigurable substrate is exploited at runtime by system optimization heuristics,which decide tomodify component configurationwhen a permanent fault is detected, providing graceful degradation. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Crowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals.

Mobile devices, especially smartphones are increasingly gaining ground in several domains, particularly healthcare, tele-monitoring, and education to perform Resource-intensive Mobile Applications (RiMA). However, constrained resources, especially CPU and battery hinder their successful adoption. Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) aims to augment computational capabilities of resource-constraint mobile devices and conserve their native resources by remotely performing intensive tasks. In typical MCC solutions, intensive tasks are offloaded to distant VM-based cloud data centers or cloudlets whose exploitation originates long WAN latency and/or virtualization overhead degrading RiMA execution efficiency. In this paper, a lightweight Resource-oriented MCC (RMCC) architecture is proposed that exploits resources of plethora of Adjacent Service-based Mobile Cloudlets (ASMobiC) as fine-grained mobile service providers. In RMCC, ASMobiCs host prefabricated Restful services to be asynchronously called by mobile service consumers at runtime. RMCC is a Restful cross-platform architecture functional on major mobile OSs (e.g., Android and iOS) and realizes utilization of the computing resources of off-the-shelve outdated or damaged-yet-functioning mobile devices towards green MCC. Results of benchmarking advocate significant mean time- and energy-saving of 87% and 71.45%, respectively when intensive tasks are executed in ASMobiCs. © 2014 IEEE.

Interest in array based imaging of terahertz energy (T-Rays) has gained traction lately, specifically using a CMOS process due to its ease of manufacturability and the use of MOSFETs as a detection mechanism. Incident terahertz radiation on to the gate channel region of a MOSFET can be related to plasmonic response waves which change the electron density and potential across the channel. The 0.35 μm silicon CMOS MOSFETs tested in this work contain varying structures, providing a range of detectors to analyze. Included are individual test transistors for which various operating parameters and modes are studied and results presented. A focus on single transistor-antenna testing provides a path for discovering the most efficient combination for coupling 0.2 THz band energy. An evaluation of fabricated terahertz band test detection MOSFETs is conducted. Sensitivity analysis and responsivity are described, in parallel with theoretical expectations of the plasmonic response in room temperature conditions. A maximum responsivity of 40 000 V/W and corresponding NEP of 10 pW/Hz1/2 (±10% uncertainty) is achieved. © 2014 SPIE.

In this paper, we examine the use of beamforming techniques to interrogate a multitude of neural implants in a distributed, ultrasound-based intra-cortical recording platform known as Neural Dust [1]. We propose a general framework to analyze system design tradeoffs in the ultrasonic beamformer that extracts neural signals from modulated ultrasound waves that are backscattered by free-floating neural dust (ND) motes. Simulations indicate that high-resolution linearly-constrained minimum variance beamforming sufficiently suppresses interference from unselected ND motes and can be incorporated into the ND-based cortical recording system.

In this work, we report the first Negative-Capacitance FinFET. ALD Hf 042 Zr 058 O 2 is added on top of the FinFET's gate stack. The test devices have a floating internal gate that can be electrically probed. Direct measurement found the small-signal voltage amplified by 1.6X maximum at the internal gate in agreement with the improvement of the subthreshold swing (from 87 to 55mV/decade). I ON increased by >25% for the I OFF . For the first time, we demonstrate that raising HfZrO 2 ferroelectricity, by annealing at higher temperature, reduces and eliminates IV hysteresis and increases the voltage gain. These discoveries will guide future theoretical and experimental work.
