In this work, the impact of different ozone-based cleaning processes on the level of surface passivation achieved is determined and compared against the RCA cleaning processes. Two different passivation materials are used in this study, including hydrogenated amorphous silicon and silicon nitride plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Photoconductance measurements and calibrated photoluminescence imaging are used to evaluate the level of passivation achieved and spatial uniformity for the different cleaning processes.

Driven by desirable attributes such as topological characterization and invariance to isometric transformations, the use of the Laplace-Beltrami operator (LBO) and its associated spectrum have been widely adopted among the shape analysis community. Here we demonstrate a novel use of the LBO for shape matching and retrieval by estimating probability densities on its Eigen space, and subsequently using the intrinsic geometry of the density manifold to categorize similar shapes. In our framework, each 3D shape's rich geometric structure, as captured by the low order eigenvectors of its LBO, is robustly characterized via a nonparametric density estimated directly on these eigenvectors. By utilizing a probabilistic model where the square root of the density is expanded in a wavelet basis, the space of LBO-shape densities is identifiable with the unit hyper sphere. We leverage this simple geometry for retrieval by computing an intrinsic Karcher mean (on the hyper sphere of LBO-shape densities) for each shape category, and use the closed-form distance between a query shape and the means to classify shapes. Our method alleviates the need for superfluous feature extraction schemes-required for popular bag-of-features approaches-and experiments demonstrate it to be robust and competitive with the state-of-the-art in 3D shape retrieval algorithms.

The rapid increase of power consumption due to Internet traffic growth has made the reduction of power used by network equipment a vital issue. We earlier proposed a dynamic transmission capacity control scheme to reduce power consumption on the basis of changes in traffic volume. However, that scheme does not have a function to control the power-saving performance according to the required transmission quality. We propose a new scheme here that does consider the required connection quality. In this scheme, the required transmission capacity is determined in a way that satisfies a predetermined tolerance delay at a switch. Using simulation studies, including an evaluation with real traffic, we show that the proposed scheme enables efficient power saving without impairing the required transmission quality. © 2014 IEEE.

Intermittent electricity generation from renewable sources is characterized by a wide range of fluctuations in frequency spectrum. The medium-frequency component of 0.01 Hz - 1 Hz cannot be filtered out by system inertia and automatic generation control (AGC) and thus it results in deterioration of frequency quality. In this paper, an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) based supplementary frequency controller for thermal generators is developed to attenuate renewable generation fluctuation in medium-frequency range. A policy iteration based training algorithm is employed for online and model-free learning. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed supplementary frequency controller can effectively adapt to changes in the system and provide improved frequency control. Further sensitivity analysis validates that the supplementary frequency controller significantly attenuates the dependence of frequency deviation on the medium-frequency component of renewable generation fluctuation.

Cryptographically-Curated File System (CCFS) proposed in this work supports the adoption of Information-Centric Networking. CCFS utilizes content names that span trust boundaries, verify integrity, tolerate disruption, authenticate content, and provide non-repudiation. Irrespective of the ability to reach an authoritative host, CCFS provides secure access by binding a chain of trust into the content name itself. Curators cryptographically bind content to a name, which is a path through a series of objects that map human meaningful names to cryptographically strong content identifiers. CCFS serves as a network layer for storage systems unifying currently disparate storage technologies. The power of CCFS derives from file hashes and public keys used as a name with which to retrieve content and as a method of verifying that content. We present results from our prototype implementation. Our results show that the overhead associated with CCFS is not negligible, but also is not prohibitive.

A 2.4GHz novel RF Mixer with folded structure designed in 180nm RF-Mixed signal technology has been investigated. It is implemented by using double balanced transconductance switch (GmSw) configuration. The proposed mixer converts incoming signal to small signal RF current followed by PMOS current mirror structure. The circuit is designed and optimized such that it can operate at less than 1.8V of power supply. This paper proposes a design which focuses on the isolation between mixer ports. The high isolation achieved by incorporating folded structure with CMOS LO stage. In addition to that, the Mixer Common Mode Rejection Ratio (MCMRR) for the proposed folded mixer is defined in this paper. The post layout simulation has achieved 5 dB of conversion gain and 9 dBm third order input intermodulation product (IIP3). The highest isolation between LO-IF, RF-IF and LO-RF observed were up to 69 dB, 55 dB and 86 dB respectively.

Many systems can be modelled as networks of interconnected continuous-time transfer functions. The coefficients of the transfer functions in the network are often directly related to physical properties of the system. Thus, the question we consider is: under what conditions is it possible to obtain a consistent estimate of a continuous-time transfer function embedded in a dynamic network? We consider both direct and indirect continuous-time approaches. We show that a discrete-time model of a continuous-time data generating system may have a different interconnection structure (due to aliasing) and may have algebraic loops (due to the intersample behaviour). Subsequently we present an instrumental variable based method to directly identify a continuous-time transfer function embedded in a network.

This paper considers a scenario in which multiple device-to-device (D2D) users can reuse the uplink resources of a cellular network to transmit directly to their corresponding receivers. The aggregated interference from the D2D users is limited by applying a threshold on the allowable interference in the base station. The problem is solved under two types of constraints, namely, the peak interference and average interference constraints. In the former, we assume that full channel state information (CSI) is available at the base station, and we optimize the allowable transmit power for the D2D users so that the number of coexisting D2D communications is maximized. We further define a quality-of-service constraint for the D2D users. In practice, however, it is difficult to have complete CSI at the base station as it imposes heavy signaling overhead. Therefore, in the latter scenario, we assume that no knowledge about the location of D2D users and their CSI are available at the base station. This approach does not impose any signaling overhead. Our results show that even with no CSI knowledge, we are able to improve the system performance in terms of throughput by allowing coexisting D2D communications while satisfying the cellular user's constraints.

The breach of privacy in encrypted instant messenger (IM) service is a serious threat to user anonymity. Performance of previous de-anonymization strategies was limited to 65%. We perform network de-anonymization by taking advantage of the cause-effect relationship between sent and received packet streams and demonstrate this approach on a data set of Yahoo! IM service traffic traces. An investigation of various measures of causality shows that IM networks can be breached with a hit rate of 99%. A KCI Causality based approach alone can provide a true positive rate of about 97%. Individual performances of Granger, Zhang and IGCI causality are limited owing to the very low SNR of packet traces and variable network delays.

This paper introduces the Cloud-based Radio Access Network (C-RAN) architecture into heterogeneous network (HetNet), in which distributed antennas are connected to a cloud-based baseband processing unit through optical fibers. Among various opportunities realized by this architecture, our focus in this paper is on the spectral efficiency (SE) advantages achieved by cooperative transmission and its associated power consumption that may affect the energy efficiency (EE) of the system. A simple but efficient pre-coding scheme is proposed to reduce the computation complexity of cooperative transmission, thus lowering the associated power consumption, and a detailed power model is then developed to benchmark the various sources of energy consumption in C-RAN. Through detailed simulation, an early performance evaluation of the potentially energy efficient C-RAN implementation was demonstrated.
