Denoising is an essential application to improve image quality, especially in medical imaging. This paper introduces an example and patch-based learning method for reducing Gaussian noise and Poisson noise which often appear in medical imaging modalities using ionizing radiation. In the proposed method, denoising is performed by learning the regression model based on a set of the nearest neighbors of a given noisy patch, with the help of a given set of standard images. The method is evaluated and compared to several state-of-the-art denoising methods. The obtained results confirm its efficiency, especially for heavy noise. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper proposes the allocation method for capacitor-reactor banks in a distribution system with dispersed generators to reduce the installation costs, the maintenance costs and minimize the loss of electrical energy. The expected lifetime and maintenance period of devices with moving parts depends on the total number of operations, which affects the replacement and maintenance period for aging equipment under a limited budget. In this paper, the expected device lifetimes and the maintenance period are included in the formulation, and the optimal operation status of the devices is determined using a genetic algorithm. The optimal numbers and locations for capacitor-reactor banks are determined based on the optimal operation status. Simulation results in a 69-bus distribution system with the dispersed generator show that the proposed technique performs better than conventional methods.

The low computing power of sensors and especially their limited energy are obstacles to the deployment of advanced techniques, and many of the researchers are still searching for better solutions, which can accommodate security, would meld lifetime and a good latency of sensors. We have to remember that they are not the only secure solution in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The level of security and the vulnerability of a wireless sensors network depend on the application that we have to deploy. We suggest a few techniques in this paper. In future work, we may research to prolong the lifetime of the battery in the WSN by applying a solar mate in order to provide backup to the energy of power supply when it comes to drain. Stackable 3DFETs such as FinFET using hybrid Si/MoS 2 channels were developed using a fully CMOS-compatible process. Adding several molecular layers (3-16 layers) of the transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD), MoS 2 to Si fin and nanowire resulted in improved (+25%) I on,n of the FinFET and nanowire FET (NWFET). The PFETs also operated effectively and the N/P device V th are low and matched perfectly. The proposed heterogeneous Si/TMD 3DFETs can be useful in future electronics.

WiFi-based device-free localization is a main indoor localization technique that has attracted much attention recently. Typically, due to the complex wireless propagation in indoor environments, WiFi-based device-free localization requires a construction of a fingerprint map that captures the signal strength characteristics when the human is standing at certain locations in the area of interest. This fingerprint requires significant overhead in construction, and thus has been one of the major drawbacks of WiFi-based device-free localization. In this paper, we leverage an automated tool for fingerprint construction to study novel scenarios for WiFi-based device-free localization training and testing that are difficult to evaluate in a real environment. In particular, we examine the effect of changing the access points (AP) mounting location, AP technology upgrade, and outsider effect;on the accuracy of the localization system. Our analysis provides recommendations for better localization and provides insights for both researchers and practitioners.

We envisage a wireless sensor network (WSN) where each node is tasked with estimating a set of node-specific desired signals that has been corrupted by additive noise. The nodes accomplish this estimation by means of the distributed adaptive node-specific estimation (DANSE) algorithm in a tree topology (T-DANSE). In this paper, we consider a network where there is at least one node with a large (virtually infinite) energy budget, which we select as the root node. We propose a modification to the signal flow of the T-DANSE algorithm where instead of each node having two-way signal communication, there is a single signal flow toward the root node of the tree topology which then broadcasts a single signal to all other nodes. We demonstrate that the modified algorithm is equivalent to the original T-DANSE algorithm in terms of the signal estimation performance, shifts a large part of the communication burden toward the high-power root node to reduce the energy consumption in the low-power nodes and reduces the input-output delay.

Cloud computing has demonstrated tremendous capability in a wide spectrum of online services. Virtualization provides an efficient solution to the utilization of modern multicore processor systems while affording significant flexibility. The growing popularity of virtualized datacenters motivates deeper understanding of the interactions between virtual machine management and the micro-architecture behaviors of the privileged domain. We argue that these behaviors must be factored into the design of processor microarchitecture in virtualized datacenters. In this work, we use performance counters on modern servers to study the micro-architectural execution characteristics of the privileged domain while performing various VM management operations. Our study shows that today's state-of-the-art processor still has room for further optimizations when executing virtualized cloud workloads, particularly in the organization of last level caches and on-chip cache coherence protocol. Specifically, our analysis shows that: shared caches could be partitioned to eliminate interference between the privileged domain and guest domains;the cache coherence protocol could support a high degree of data sharing of the privileged domain;and cache capacity or CPU utilization occupied by the privileged domain could be effectively managed when performing management workflows to achieve high system throughput. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper we study state-space realizations of Linear and Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. Motivated by biochemical reaction networks, Gonçalves and Warnick have recently introduced the notion of a Dynamical Structure Functions (DSF), a particular factorization of the system's transfer function matrix that elucidates the interconnection structure in dependencies between manifest variables. We build onto this work by showing an intrinsic connection between a DSF and certain sparse left coprime factorizations. By establishing this link, we provide an interesting systems theoretic interpretation of sparsity patterns of coprime factors. In particular we show how the sparsity of these coprime factors allows for a given LTI system to be implemented as a network of LTI sub-systems. We examine possible applications in distributed control such as the design of a LTI controller that can be implemented over a network with a pre-specified topology. ©2013 IEEE.
