We present here key technologies for an all-optical timing distribution system with sub-femtosecond precision. Timing distribution over a 1.2-km polarization-maintaining, fiber-optic link using balanced optical cross-correlators (BOC) for link stabilization was demonstrated for 16 days with 0.6 fs RMS timing drift and during a 3-day interval only 0.13 fs drift. Jitter characterization of two identical commercial femtosecond lasers using the BOC method verified sub-100-as timing jitter for frequencies above than 1 kHz. Preliminary operation of a fiber-coupled, hybrid-integrated BOC using periodically-poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) waveguides indicate great potential for improved BOC timing sensitivities and overall system efficiency and robustness. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper we present a solution to the problem of positioning a team of Micro Aerial Vehicles for a surveillance task in an environment of arbitrary and unknown morphology. The problem is addressed taking into account physical and environmental constraints like limited sensor capabilities and obstacle avoidance. The goal is to maximize the area monitored by the team, by identifying the best configuration of the team members. The proposed method is a distributed extension of our previous work based on the Cognitive Adaptive Optimization (CAO) algorithm. This distributed and scalable approach allows us to obtain coordinated and safe trajectories to accomplish the task in 3D environments. The different formulation of the problem considered in this paper allows also dealing with communication constraints. We provide extensive experimental results using data collected by a team of aerial robots and compare the efficiency of the distributed and centralized approach.

The limited payload and on-board computation constraints of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) make sensor configuration very challenging for autonomous navigation and 3D mapping. This paper introduces a catadioptric single-camera omni-stereo vision system that uses a pair of custom-designed mirrors (in a folded configuration) satisfying the single view point (SVP) property. The system is compact and lightweight, has a wide baseline which allows fast 3D reconstruction based on stereo calculation. The algorithm for generating range panoramas is also introduced. The simulation and experimental study demonstrate that the system provides a good solution to the perception challenge of MAVs.

This paper proposes a delay compensation strategy for a distributed fault detection architecture, allowing to manage delays and packet losses in the communication network between the Local Fault Diagnosers. A novel consensus-based estimator with time-varying weights is introduced, permitting to improve detectability in the case of variables shared among more than one subsystem. In the consensus protocol, at each step each agent uses only the information given by the agent and the communication link which are more reliable at that time. The convergence of the proposed estimator is demonstrated and analytical conditions for detectability are derived.

Leakage-resilient public key encryption (PKE) schemes are designed to resist "memory attacks", i.e., the adversary recovers the cryptographic key in the memory adaptively, but subject to constraint that the total amount of leaked information about the key is bounded by some parameter λ. Among all the IND-CCA2 leakage-resilient PKE proposals, the leakage-resilient version of the Cramer-Shoup cryptosystem (CS-PKE), referred to as the KL-CS-PKE scheme proposed by Naor and Segev in Crypto09, is the most practical one. But, the key leakage parameter λ and plaintext length m of KL-CS-PKE are subject to λ + m ≤ log q - ω(log κ), where κ is security parameter and q is the prime order of the group on which the scheme is based. Such a dependence between λ and m is undesirable. For example, when λ (resp., m) approaches to log q, m (resp., λ) approaches to 0. In this paper, we designed a new variant of CS-PKE that is resilient to key leakage chosen ciphertext attacks. Our proposal is λ ≤ log q - ω(log κ) leakage-resilient, and the leakage parameter λ is independent of the plaintext space that has the constant size q (exactly the same as that in CS-PKE). The performance of our proposal is almost as efficient as the original CS-PKE. As far as we know, this is the first leakage-resilient CS-type cryptosystem whose plaintext length is independent of the key leakage parameter, and is also the most efficient IND-CCA2 PKE scheme resilient to up to log q - ω(log κ) leakage. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Fluorescence ratiometric temperature sensing system for stand-off temperature measurements in the physiological range is presented. It is based on the use of fluorescence dyes and an integrating photodetector system. The system is intended for use in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). It utilizes a measurement and a reference fluorescence dyes encapsulated in a film. Fluorescence is excited using LEDs and the emission is detected using photodiodes equipped with optical band pass filters. The current generated by the photodiodes is integrated and the charge is digitized. The fluorescence intensity is calculated as the difference in the measured intensities when the LED is on or off. The ratio of the two emission intensities depends linearly on the temperature. The system operates under room-light illumination with resolution <0.1℃ at a rate 1 sample per second. It is capable to better suppress the influence of the ambient light intensity as compared with previous camera based systems.

The Software Assurance Metrics and Tool Evaluation (SAMATE) project at the National Institute of Standards and technology (NIST) has organized four Static Analysis Tool Expositions (SATE). SATE is designed to advance research in static analysis tools that find security-relevant defects in source code. Briefly, participating tool makers run their tools on a set of programs. Researchers led by NIST analyze the tool outputs. The results and experiences are reported at a workshop. These expositions have accumulated large amounts of data. This collection allowed for the development and validation of practical metrics in regard to static analysis tool effectiveness and independence. In this paper, we discuss the role of the data in determining which metrics can be derived. Specifically, we detail the three characteristics test data should exhibit and explain why the data we use express each combination of two out of these three properties.

An adaptive supervisory switching control scheme for nonlinear uncertain systems is developed. Such a scheme comprises: a family of nonlinear candidate controllers, designed using a convex control design methodology;and a Lyapunovbased switching criterion that orchestrates which of the candidate controllers should be put in feedback with the uncertain plant. The family of candidate controllers is designed in such a way that, for every portion of the uncertainty set there is one Lyapunov function whose derivative is decreasing with a prescribed rate. Such Lyapunov functions are used by the switching logic to assess which is the most suitable controller to be put in feedback. The resulting scheme guarantees semi-global stability with desired transient performance, in terms of decaying rate of the derivative of the Lyapunov function.
