Sensor fusion in complex systems often relies on well-calibrated, expert sensors to achieve accurate and reliable outcomes. Integrating untrained or inexpert sensors into such networks poses significant challenges such as the cost associated with manually training them for the overall network objective. This paper presents an adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) approach to seamlessly incorporate an inexpert sensor into an established sensor network. By leveraging the existing trained sensors, the proposed method dynamically adjusts the inexpert sensor's parameters, enabling it to contribute effectively to the overall system. We evaluate the performance of this approach using absolute errors and Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence. Preliminary results show that the proposed AKF achieves a KL divergence on the order of 10-4 in a binary classification task, significantly outperforming a recursive density estimation method. It is also shown that in a diverging multivariate target tracking problem, after being trained, two inexpert sensors successfully contribute to a sensor network, even after temporarily removing the expert sensor. © 2025 IEEE.

Ensuring reliable and secure operation of power distribution networks requires effective over-current protection, which involves correct coordination between the protective devices such as fuses, circuit breaker and relays. This paper examines the coordination between relay tripping and total clearing time of fuse operation, evaluating protective devices performance as primary and backup protection mechanisms at various fault location. The simulation model is designed using PSCAD/EMTDC software, with the IEEE-13 node test feeder system serving as the basis for analysis. The study focuses on the tripping times of relays and fuses operation during low impedance shunt faults, including single-line-to-ground (LG), double-line-to-ground (LLG), and three-line-to-ground (LLLG) faults. This analysis contributes to improving the design and implementation of protection strategies in modern distribution networks. © 2024 IEEE.

The present numerical study explores the resonant modes generated within a microwave imaging chamber having perfectly conducting walls and loaded by a breast phantom. The objective of this preliminary work is to investigate whether such a resonant set-up, and an understanding of the modal field distribution, can be used to improve microwave imaging. As such the perturbation of the resonant frequencies and associated modes are identified utilizing the eigenmode projection technique. A simplified 2D model is utilized to assess the sensitivity of the resonant modes and frequencies to various tissues, such as different sizes, shapes, and locations of tumour and fibroglandular tissue regions, located within the breast model. It is found that there is a considerable variation in the sensitivity of the resulting modes to tissue anomalies located within the breast. © 2024 IEEE.

Modern power distribution networks enhance their capacity by integrating renewable energy resources (RES). However, RES integration into traditional distribution systems poses protection challenges, such as changes in fault current and altered fault current paths. This paper investigates the impact of distributed generation (DG) on over-current protection in distribution networks. The system model has been simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The IEEE-13 node test feeder system is used for performance analysis of protection system with and without photovoltaic system. The results show the impact of photovoltaic systems at different feeder locations (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the length) for LG, LLG, and LLLG faults. © 2024 IEEE.

The growing presence of autonomous vehicles (AVs) on our roads has been applauded by many people, including those in the transportation, military, and logistics industries. However, an equally growing concern about AVs is that they raise new cybersecurity challenges, including the need for a robust digital forensic investigation framework to investigate incidents or criminal activities involving AVs. Of more concern is that traditional digital forensic methods have been found wanting when investigating incidents involving AVs. This is primarily due to the complex interplay of sensors, software, and human interaction involved in AV operation. In this research, therefore, the authors review existing digital forensic investigation frameworks for AVs and then analyse their strengths, weaknesses, and suitability for addressing various AV forensic challenges. Additionally, we analyse the potential legal and ethical implications of digital forensic investigations in AV contexts. The authors aim to identify key AV forensic challenges and future directions through this research. As a new contribution, the authors propose high-level ontological digital forensic investigation framework components as a starting point towards a comprehensive framework and the basis for further exploration and future research. This includes the future implementation of the proposed components into a fully-fledged ontological framework that supports efficient and reliable digital forensic investigation processes for autonomous vehicles. © 2024 IEEE.

The rising prevalence of sleep disorders highlights their disastrous effects on health, well-being, cognitive performance, memory, and learning outcomes. Sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea normally require extensive instrumentation and expertise for diagnosis, which is not always possible or even available in most cases. This work, therefore, proposes a state-of-the-art use of Machine Learning (ML) to develop a model for the classification and detection of sleep patterns from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The model is trained on a synthetic dataset, developed using mathematical simulations of real-life EEG data. This is a novelty in this area, which allows this model to be precise yet robust without relying too much on real-world *** application bridges advanced AI techniques with real-world applications and smooths out the experience for healthcare professionals and researchers alike. This research highlights how ML might transform sleep medicine through efficient, extended solutions for EEG data analysis and sleep disorder detection. We provide a realistic EEG simulation combined with an intuitive application, a powerful platform that makes advanced sleep diagnostics more accessible and impactful, which supports the development of educational strategies or technologies. © 2025 IEEE.

Coarse-grained reconfigurable arrays (CGRAs) belong to the family of configurable processing architectures that have recently attracted increasing interest for their adaptability and efficiency. Research on CGRA architectures and their associated CAD tools is typically conducted empirically, by modelling a CGRA fabric, mapping applications onto it, and then assessing performance, power, and/or area (PPA). In this paper, we describe an open-source framework for such CGRA research - CGRA-ME - CGRA modelling and exploration. We describe the recently released version 2.0 of CGRA - ME, which incorporates a new mapping approach, support for elastic CGRAs, floating point, predication, hybrid RISC-V+CGRA systems, and more. © 2024 IEEE.

As the growth in satellite applications and the Internet is projected to extend beyond Earth into the solar system, satellite networks operating beyond Earth's orbit are becoming a major point of interest. These satellite networks are expected to implement the Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) architecture, which is specifically designed for networks with frequent intermittency, large delays, and high packet loss. The Licklider Transmission Protocol (LTP) is a specialized transport layer protocol used in space internetworking, providing reliability through retransmissions of the lost packets, with lower overhead compared to Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). This paper presents an analysis of LTP performance for satellite-to-satellite Earth-to-Moon links, based on the physical layer parameters of these radio links. Specifically, we defined the link budget for such links and, using two different modulation methods, calculated the segment error probability (SER). Given the SER, LTP performance was evaluated in terms of transmission time for varying block sizes. Our results show that a lower modulation order leads to a lower SER, which in turn reduces transmission time and increases throughput. © 2024 IEEE.

Eye-tracking technology has rapidly gained popularity as a revolutionary solution for individuals with severe physical disabilities, empowering them to engage in their daily activities with new found independence and efficiency. By utilizing advanced eye-tracking systems, individuals with limited mobility are able to control various devices and interfaces simply by moving their eyes. This paper utilizes deep learning techniques to create a low-cost real-time eye-tracking interface for controlling systems. A smart wheelchair and a robotic arm have been developed to design an eye-tracker, aiming to address the challenges faced by paralyzed people with severe physical limitations. The results demonstrate that eye-tracking is both fast and accurate, making it an effective tool for improving the interactions and accessibility for disabled individuals. © 2023 IEEE.

In industry, the advancement of digital engineering and the digital thread aims to reduce the impact of knowledge ‘siloes’ by providing a way to integrate data across the entire system lifecycle and across multiple domains. In a typical engineering curriculum, however, courses are still treated as ‘siloes’, and students often do not have the opportunity to experience this industrially relevant approach to engineering. The Digital engineering Factory (DEF) is a digital engineering environment under development at the University of Arizona to support engineering students. The DEF supports students by providing access to multiple engineering tools and is structured using a ‘hub-and-spoke’ approach to consolidate data from these tools. Through this connected architecture, students can transfer data generated in a particular course to tools for use in other courses. Connecting course activities in this way enables students to experience a complete end-to-end system lifecycle. At its ‘hub’, the DEF uses Violet to integrate data from multiple sources, create a digital thread, and generate a graph representation of the dataset. This knowledge graph, written in the Ontological Modeling Language (OML), can be viewed in OML Rosetta and is structured according to the University of Arizona Ontology Stack (UAOS). The use of the UAOS and OML Rosetta allows instructors to leverage semantic web technologies to support teaching activities such as grading. In this paper, the authors review the objectives of the DEF, discuss the status of the project, and highlight current limitations and lessons learned with regards to its deployment.
