Development of a Reinforcement Learning-Based Control Education Platform Using Python and LW-RCP

This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based control education platform utilizing Python and light-weight rapid control prototyping (LW-RCP). The platform employs the Sim-to-Real technique, in which neural networks are trained in a Python-based simulation environment and applied to real systems. The trained networks are converted into a format compatible with Matlab/Simulink. The lab-built LW-RCP is used to implement a real-time controller under the Simulink environment by incorporating the converted networks. The proposed platform allows students to easily apply reinforcement learning theory to real systems, contributing to the integration of reinforcement learning control into control curriculum. The effectiveness of the proposed platform is demonstrated by implementing a reinforcement learning controller for the pendubot system. The implemented controller performs the swing-up and transition control and exhibits strong disturbance rejection and recovery properties. © 2025 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. A Study on the Administrative Efficiency for Electric Vehicle Charging Station Expansion in South Korea

The Korean central government ministries and local governments are major actors in enacting policies to support the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure. However, the installation, operation, and business procedure guidelines are still evolving, leading to many trial-and-error situations. This paper addresses the deficiencies in the guidelines issued by Korea's Ministry of Environment for installing and operating EV charging infrastructure. It proposes solutions to overcome the limitations of the existing guidelines by presenting a new business model not specified in the current guidelines and providing practical measures applicable in the field. Additionally, it suggests a new model for the composition of the business selection committee to ensure fair and systematic administration in the selection of proposers and executing agencies. The goals of the study aim to offer a new perspective on the guidelines for EV charging infrastructure and contribute to the continuous implementation and operation of related projects. Optimal Design of a Variable Reluctance Resolver to Minimize Position Error

The precision of position estimation in VR resolvers significantly relies on the harmonic components present in the induced voltage across the secondary winding. The degraded accuracy can be compensated by carefully designing the stator windings and core geometry. This paper presents an optimized design process aimed at minimizing the position error of VR resolvers. The alterations in the resolver output signal's position information, resulting from the phase shift of the stator windings, third harmonic injection-based rotor geometry modifications, and changes to the stator core shape, are thoroughly analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA). Subsequently, a genetic algorithm-based optimization technique is applied to construct an optimal design process that effectively minimizes the position error in VR resolvers. Case study results demonstrate an approximately 80% enhancement in position estimation accuracy for the optimal model compared to the initial model. © 2024 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. A Case Study on the Implementation of an electrical Safety Training Center: Incheon International Airport

The number of electrical safety accidents has been decreasing compared to the past, but they are still occurring. Since its opening in 2001, Incheon International Airport has been steadily installing new power facilities and improving existing facilities, and electrical safety accidents have occurred intermittently at these sites. Various electrical facilities have been installed and operated at Incheon Airport such as underground transmission lines connecting to 154kV power grid of Korea Electric Power Corporation, 154/22.9kV substations, 170kV GIS facilities, 25.8kV GIS facilities, 22.9kV underground distribution lines to supply power to passenger terminals and auxiliary buildings, switch gears and 22.9kV/380V transformers. Accordingly, since 2021, Incheon International Airport has implemented these devices using Virtual Reality technology to prevent safety accidents caused by unskilled devices through education and pre-work training for new employees. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the VR training center of Incheon Airport to prevent electrical safety accidents and analyze the effects accordingly. © 2024 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. A High Power Density Active-Clamp Forward-Flyback Converter with Three Planar Transformer for xEV Low Voltage DC-DC Converter

This paper proposes an Active-Clamp Forward-Flyback (ACFF) converter with three planar transformers to achieve 4 kW output power. As autonomous driving technology rapidly advances, the demand for higher output power from low-voltage DC-DC converters (LDC) in electric vehicles has significantly increased. Conventionally, two 2 kW ACFF converters with four magnetic cores connected in series-parallel have been used to meet 4 kW power requirement, but this configuration has proven inefficient in terms of size, power density, and cost. The proposed converter improves power density by integrating the four magnetic cores of the conventional 4 kW ACFF converter into three, reducing the overall magnetic volume and allowing for a more compact design. Furthermore, the use of planar magnetic components enables the winding to be embedded in a 4-layer PCB. Copyright © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Magnetic bearing motors are in high demand due to their ability to operate in special environments without mechanical friction and lubrication, effectively avoiding wear and contamination. To overcome the complexity and maximum speed limitations, bearingless PMSMs (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) have been developed. This study explains the electromagnetic driving principles of bearingless PMSMs based on generation conditions and the components of suspension forces. Furthermore, the permanent magnets arranged on the rotor are designed to alter the magnetic flux distribution using various magnetization patterns. FEA(Finite Element Analysis) was conducted for each model, and the derived results were compared and analyzed. This study investigates the performance of bearingless PMSMs based on different rotor permanent magnet arrangements, and draws a comprehensive conclusion. © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Evaluation of the Economic Viability and Sustainability of Renewable Energy using Building Integrated Photovoltaics in an Urban Apartment Complex

In order to cope with the current climate crisis, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an important issue, and it is necessary to increase the amount of renewable energy generation. However, there is a problem of economics in renewable energy, and in the case of the Republic of Korea, there is a problem of geographical mismatch between the supply and demand of renewable energy. This study proposes building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) as a way to solve the problems associated with renewable energy. In this study, a model for charging an electric bus by the power generated by building integrated photovoltaics was proposed, evaluated and analyzed. The results show that BIPV can generate revenue of KRW 39.9 billion over 30 years and can contribute to increasing the amount of renewable energy generation in Seoul by accounting for 1.85% of the annual solar power generation in Seoul. © 2024 Korean Institute of electrical Engineers. A Study on Learning of Ensemble Classification Model Based on Radial Basis Function Neural Networks

In this study, we introduce an ensemble model that leverages a radial basis function neural network as the base model to enhance the classification performance of a pattern classifier. While existing ensemble models use the majority vote technique for aggregation, we proposes a new aggregation method that combines a simple linear function and a softmax function, using the outputs of the base model as input variables. This aggregation approach linearly combines the class prediction probabilities from each base model to calculate the class-specific probability for the ensemble model. To evaluate the performance of the proposed pattern classifier, we used 14 datasets to optimize the parameters of the linear function and compared the performance with existing pattern classifiers. Our method achieved better results on 10 out of the 14 datasets compared to other pattern classifiers. Additionally, when compared with a recently reported ensemble model, our method also demonstrated superior performance. Copyright © The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers.

Hybrid CNN-ViT architecture to exploit spatio-temporal feature for fire recognition trained through transfer learning

Fires are becoming one of the major natural hazards that threaten the ecology, economy, human life and even more worldwide. Therefore, early fire detection systems are crucial to prevent fires from spreading out of control and causing destruction. Based on vision sensors, many fire detection techniques have evolved with the recent surge of curiosity in deep learning, which exploits the spatial features of individual images. However, fire can take different forms, scales, and combustion materials can produce different colors, making accurate fire detection from an image challenging. Small fires captured from long-distance cameras lack salient features, further complicating detection. This paper proposes a hybrid structure that uses attention-enhanced convolutional neural networks and vision transformers (CNN-ViT) to detect fire. The proposed CNN-ViT first pays spatial attention to every frame and then aggregates temporal contextual information from neighboring frames to improve detection performance. Due to the limited availability of training fire datasets, the study employs deep transfer learning for feature extraction using pre-trained CNN. We used various metrics to examine the efficacy of the proposed approach. The results showed that the CNN-ViT method outperformed previous models based on spatial-temporal characteristics by achieving a relative improvement in accuracy and F1 score. The satisfactory results on images contaminated with different intensities of noise confirm the robustness of the approach. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Robust decentralized plug and play voltage tracker of islanded microgrids under loads and lines uncertainties by the invariant ellipsoids

Microgrids (MGs) comprising of distributed generation units (DGs) are subjected to plug-and-play operation (PnP), lines (connecting the DGs) parameters uncertainty, and load changes. Robust stability and an authentic operation for islanded microgrids can be guaranteed through a robust decentralized voltage tracker developed in this paper. The proposed controller design has the following merits: 1) fully decentralized, 2) scalable, and 3) maintains robust stability against PnP of DGs, load changes, and lines parameters’ uncertainties. A sufficient condition is developed by linear matrix inequality convex optimization is exploited to solve the problem. The MGs’ changes in load and the line's parameters are modelled as norm-bounded uncertainties. The suggested controller uses local measurements from DGs, i.e., decentralized by the decomposition of the global system into subsystems. For each subsystem, the rest of the system's impact is considered disturbances, whose influence must be minimized. The proposed disturbance rejection control algorithm is based on the method of invariant-ellipsoids. Several time-domain scenarios such as connecting and disconnecting a number of DGs, local load changes, and variation of transmission line parameters are executed to assess the suggested controller's effectiveness, using MATLAB /Sim PowerSystems Toolbox. © 2021 The Authors
