A new dual-channel discontinuous mode isolated current source gate driver (ICSGD) is proposed in this paper. The proposed gate driver can provide two isolated gate drive signals for two power MOSFETs in circuits where these switches are in sync. The proposed gate driver can achieve very fast turn on and turn off transitions, due to its current mode nature. In addition, this technique can achieve partial gate energy recovery by recovering a fraction of the RMS (CV2) energy, which is typically dissipated over the gate drive resistors in voltage source gate drive (VSGD) techniques. Thus, provides better efficiency. The proposed circuit consists of six transistors and a small pulse transformer to allow swift operation over a wide range of duty cycles. Current through the transformer is discontinuous to avoid conduction losses due to circulating currents such as in some resonant gate drivers (RGD). Consequently, the proposed ICSGD provides superior performance over its VSGD counterparts, especially in high-frequency (HF) operation. The design is implemented in both PSIM and Typhoon HIL (hardware in the loop) platforms. The model is verified with a match of results from PSIM and Typhoon. The PSIM & HIL results show that the ICSGD achieves a minimum of 20% efficiency improvement. © 2024 IEEE.

Experimental Thermal Model-Based SOC Estimation Algorithm for Lithium-Ion Phosphate Batteries Considering Internal Temperature

This paper proposes a method for estimating the State of Charge (SOC) of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries based on an experimental thermal model that considers internal battery temperatures. The proposed algorithm involves selecting a thermal model and suggesting methods for extracting parameters from the chosen model. Using the proposed thermal model, the algorithm compensates for temperature differences in cold and hot environments, thereby correcting the internal temperature to estimate SOC accurately. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by estimating the SOC of electric vehicle LFP batteries and comparing the accuracy before and after correction. Application of Permanent Magnets with Different Magnetization in Magnetic Gear Considering Gear Ratio Conversion

A permanent magnet was used to improve the torque density of the magnetic gear for gear ratio conversion, and a study was conducted to attach the permanent magnet to the tooth tip of the rotor. Through this, it was found that attaching a permanent magnet to the outer rotor is effective. In addition, in the case of gear ratio conversion, in this method, there is a part where the magnetization direction of the electromagnet and the permanent magnet are opposite, resulting in poor results. Therefore, when applied to teeth with coincident magnetization directions, good results were obtained in all cases even when the gear ratio was converted. Question Answering (QA) is a technology that can help find answers to questions based on predefined information sources or context. However, QA sometimes still provides answers even though the question is irrelevant to the context. This inappropriate and irrelevant answer can certainly be misleading. Therefore, there is a need for QA that not only answers questions but can also recognize when the question is unanswerable. This study proposes a Text-To-Text Transfer Transformer (TS)-based QA model trained using a dataset that includes questions with and without answers. To evaluate the performance of this model on questions with answers, we compare it to a model that is only trained on questions with answers. In addition, to evaluate its performance on questions with answers and without answers, we compared it with previous research on the SQuAD-T test set and achieved an accuracy score of 77.24. The experimental results show that our proposed QA model is not only able to answer questions but also recognizes and handles questions without answers with better accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

For carbon neutrality, many countries are increasing the rate of renewable energy-based distributed generators (DGs). The DG has advantages such as voltage drop compensation and power loss reduction. However, reverse current flows and overvoltage phenomenons occur due to the penetration of DGs. DGs have different output characteristics from synchronous generators, so when DGs penetrate the grid, DGs inevitably affect the power flow and power quality of the grid. Therefore, it is necessary to check transient stability when DGs penetrate the power system. In this study, the IEEE 9-bus system, a looped system, was set as a testbed. In addition, inverter-based photovoltaic (PV) systems were used as an example of DGs. And the critical frequency limitation time was determined according to the penetration level of DGs. This study also checked the effect of reducing frequency variations through specific methodology of the PV system. Events such as fault occurrence, switch opening, fault clearing, and switch closing were set. And all the simulations for the transient analysis were conducted through DIgSILENT Power Factory. Modern society is largely dependent on the usage of energy, which is an indispensable requirement propelled by the expanding global population. The escalating need for energy presents substantial challenges for traditional energy sources, which are depleting at an accelerated rate and giving rise to considerable environmental apprehensions. Developing countries like India also have problems with their power grids because they are old, wasteful, and cannot last forever. It has problems with being reliable, having frequent blackouts, high transmission losses, bad power quality, and not enough electricity during peak hours. To tackle these difficulties, a substantial restructuring of the electrical supply system is necessary, accomplished by implementing Smart Grid and microgrid technologies, which will facilitate a remarkable transition. This article explores the components of Smart Grid systems, with a specific focus on microgrids, and their significance within the context of India. This study examines the many government efforts and regulatory agencies that are actively pushing the deployment of smart grid and microgrid technologies. Furthermore, this paper provides a concise assessment of India's endeavours, identifies probable obstacles, and proposes viable solutions. The implementation of Smart Grid and microgrid technologies plays a crucial role in promoting global sustainability in the energy sector. © 2024 IEEE.

With the development of the smart shipping industry, unmanned vessel technology is rapidly evolving, accompanied by a demand for robust Internet of Things (IoT) communication security practices. Key communication technologies for the operation of unmanned vessels include external vessel communication. One crucial aspect is the verification of the identities of the parties involved in these communication systems, as this ensures secure and trusted interactions between unmanned vessels and port management authorities. Identity authentication plays a vital role in ensuring the secure communication of unmanned vessels. This paper aims to analyze potential risks related to identity authentication technology in unmanned vessel communication systems. To effectively address these risks, we propose leveraging digital certificates and blockchain technology to achieve device non-repudiation and substitution. Based on this technology, we organize and implement defense strategies using the MITRE ATT&CK framework. This framework provides a comprehensive and systematic approach to understanding potential threats and designing appropriate defense measures. By utilizing this framework, security teams can better comprehend vulnerabilities and formulate effective countermeasures. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed defense framework, we conducted simulation experiments. These experiments helped us evaluate the efficiency and reliability of the strategies in real-world scenarios. Through these experiments, we could ascertain whether the countermeasures effectively mitigated the identified risks and ensured the secure communication of unmanned vessels. © 2024 National Taiwan Ocean University

A Study on the Global HVDC Trends and the Current Status of HVDC in Korea

HVDC systems are increasingly playing an important role in energy transmission because they have technical, economic, grid operational advantages over conventional HVAC systems. For example, HVDC is preferable for long-distance bulk transmission and asynchronous interconnection between different frequency systems. Indeed, two HVDC linkages between the Jeju island and mainland (Haenam and Jindo) in South Korea were already constructed in 1998 and 2013, respectively. There are also several HVDC projects currently under construction in South Korea. Thus, the objective of this study is to review the global trends in HVDC energy transmission, including issues in Korean HVDC systems. For this purpose, this study examines the technical and operational advantages and disadvantages in HVDC systems. Then, the global trends, including the current status of HVDC systems in South Korea, are reviewed at the aspects of capacity, converter makers, and circuit breakers. Additionally, this study summarizes the main challenges for the smooth integration of HVDC systems into the conventional AC power systems. For this purpose, this study models a CIGRE HVDC benchmark model, generates a fault, modify the model and analyzes the transient responses of the benchmark model . In the developing field of human-robot collaboration, robots increasingly share their workspace with humans, which becomes necessary to achieve seamless and safe interactions for manual guidance of robots in physical cooperation scenarios. The present study proposes a new method based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) for safe human-robot cooperation in the presence of intentional physical interactions, which is able to detect the occurrence and localization of contact on the robot arm in real-time. In this approach, contact detection and its localization are done only using the online external torque vector obtained by the residual-based observer of the robot, which eliminates any need to use additional force and vision sensors. Unlike traditional methods that depend on predefined thresholds or model-based techniques, our presented architecture with one-dimensional CNN can automatically learn the patterns from collected raw torque data and, by analyzing them, can properly predict the contact position. The performance of the proposed approach during manipulation has been validated through multiple online experiments in static and dynamic states on a KUKA LBR iiwa robot. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a current sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive scheme based on deadbeat predictive control in which a space vector pulse modulator is introduced for feedback currents to track reference currents accurately. Current sensors are omitted by replacing actual currents with predicted currents, thus only a position sensor is needed and a low-cost servo system is achieved. PI control is adopted for the speed loop. Simulation comparisons between control with current sensors and current sensorless control under external disturbances or parameter inconsistency are conducted to indicate that the performance of current sensorless control is almost the same as that of control with current sensors when the prediction model is accurate. © 2024 IEEE.
