Though industry is one of the major consumers of electricity but Demand Response (DR) research in the industrial sector is relatively immature. The use of wireless technologies as a part of demand response infrastructure in industry has benefits, including increased flexibility of operation and reduced installation and maintenance costs. In this study, a demonstration system of the infrastructure for demand response in industries is developed using two independent (and competing) standards for industrial wireless networks: WirelessHART and ISA100.11a. The demonstration system is tested by controlling the electrical loads using industrial wireless networks and obtaining the energy consumption data of the electrical loads on a host application for demand response.

Component Based Software engineering (CBSE) is being increasingly applied in the distributed embedded systems (DES) domain as long as these systems are getting more and more complex in terms of flexibility, dynamism or heterogeneity. Besides that, safety critical systems must cope with the fulfillment of safety requirements and certification standards. This factor increases considerably the development cost of safety distributed embedded systems, even more if they must cope with flexibility, dynamism and heterogeneity. This paper focuses on the distribution aspects of such systems, and more specifically on safe communication channels for safety critical distributed systems. The proposed approach describes a certifiable general purpose safety communication layer that could be reused in different systems, thereby reducing the cost of system development and certification. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper we study state-space realizations of Linear and Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. Motivated by biochemical reaction networks, Gonçalves and Warnick have recently introduced the notion of a Dynamical Structure Functions (DSF), a particular factorization of the system's transfer function matrix that elucidates the interconnection structure in dependencies between manifest variables. We build onto this work by showing an intrinsic connection between a DSF and certain sparse left coprime factorizations. By establishing this link, we provide an interesting systems theoretic interpretation of sparsity patterns of coprime factors. In particular we show how the sparsity of these coprime factors allows for a given LTI system to be implemented as a network of LTI sub-systems. We examine possible applications in distributed control such as the design of a LTI controller that can be implemented over a network with a pre-specified topology. ©2013 IEEE.

This paper demonstrates that a droop controller, which is fundamental to the operation of power systems and now the parallel operation of inverters, is intrinsically the same as a phase-locked loop (PLL), which is widely adopted in modern electrical engineering. This bridges the gap between the two communities working on droop control and PLLs. As a result, droop controllers and PLLs can be improved and further developed via adopting the advancements in the other community. This also offers insightful understanding to power systems that have inverters and generators mixed together and leads to significant technological breakthrough for the grid connection of renewable energy. For example, there is no longer a need for grid-connected inverters to have a phase-locked loop and a droop controller at the same time.

Evaluation of the sophisticated safety critical systems is a tedious and time consuming process. This process has been undertaken manually, by experts and individuals, which increase the risk of human errors and ambiguities in understanding. We introduce an approach by integrating the mutation analysis and model checking. The mutation analysis cuts down the possibility of human errors, whereas model checker analyses and verifies the semantics of the safety critical system, thereby reducing both human and semantic errors to a considerable extent.

A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a system that enables people to control an external device with their brain activity, without the need of any muscular activity. Researchers in the BCI field aim to develop applications to improve the quality of life of severely disabled patients, for whom a BCI can be a useful channel for interaction with their environment. Some of these systems are intended to control a mobile device (e. g. a wheelchair). Virtual Reality is a powerful tool that can provide the subjects with an opportunity to train and to test different applications in a safe environment. The main aim of this work is to keep the interacting liquid level and temperature parameter at the desired value. This article presents Kravari's algorithm, Generic Model control (GMC) and Hischorn's algorithms for an approximated model of interacting level and temperature process. The comparison of the above algorithms are shown. The control laws obtained from the above algorithms are relatively simple and accurate. These algorithms make the closed loop system linear in an input-output sense. control performance of Hirschorn's is found to be better. The control laws obtained for Hirschorn's algorithm gives improved Settling Time (Ts) and Integral Square Error (ISE). A two input two output MIMO has been considered and the system was thoroughly analyzed for various decoupling and linearization algorithm. ©2012 SICE.

We consider planning and implementation of fast motions for industrial manipulators constrained to a given geometric path. With such a problem formulation, which is quite reasonable for many standard operation scenarios, it is intuitively clear that a feedback controller should be designed to achieve orbital stabilization of a time-optimal trajectory instead asymptotic. We propose an algorithm to convert an asymptotically stabilizing controller into an orbitally stabilizing one and check achievable performance in simulations and, more importantly, in experiments performed on a standard industrial robot ABB IRB 140 with the IRC5-system extended with an open control interface. It is verified that the proposed re-design allows significantly reduced deviations of the actual trajectories from the desired one at high speeds not only for a chosen base feedback design but also outperforming the state-of-the-art commercial implementation offered by ABB Robotics.

Distributed Real Time systems (DRTS) are evolving to a higher level of complexity in terms of heterogeneity, dynamism and QoS constraints, as they must interact with an increasingly demanding environment. In an scenario with distributed applications running over different hardware platforms and networks, middleware technologies that provide real-time or QoS support are gaining importance, as they ease the development and deployment of complex distributed applications in heterogeneous networks while ensuring certain time and QoS constraints. In this sense, distribution middleware technologies like Data Distribution Service (DDS) have emerged, adding extensive QoS support to traditional middleware advantages. This paper proposes a component based applications management platform built on top of DDS that provides an easy way to deploy, configure and manage component based distributed applications, while ensuring the fulfillment of certain QoS aspects. © 2012 IFAC.
