Music information retrieval (MIR) is small, but fast growing discipline. It aims at extraction of relevant information from music in order to improve the work with multimedia information systems. A popular approach in MIR is to apply signal processing techniques to extract low-level features from a musical piece. However, in order to create helpful applications, high-level concepts, such as music harmony, need to be examined as well. In this paper, we present a new model for understanding music harmony in computer systems. The proposed model takes the challenge of filling the gap between music theory and mathematical structures. Inspired by the computational complexity, we then derive a new term, harmonic complexity, that can be evaluated for a musical piece, and we test it on a genre classification problem.

This paper explores the use of Satisfiability Modulo Theories to handle mirror symmetry and common-centroid analog layout placement constraints. The proposed system reads the constraints and generates the corresponding equations or inequalities needed for Microsoft Z3 solver. These inequalities are resolved using quantifier free nonlinear real arithmetic theory. This theory has doubly exponential complexity in the worst case and it guarantees generating a solution if one exists. The proposed system produces multiple layouts that satisfy the constraints and allows the designer to choose the appropriate one according to designer's experience.

The DAPRA Diverse Accessible Heterogeneous Integration (DAHI) initiative seeks to build capability in production of integrated semiconductor circuits of differing materials. Integration of materials such as GaN, InP, SiGe, and Si is a natural extension of the 3D-IC perspective and provides a unique solution for high performance circuits. In this approach, application of a component is no longer dependent on semiconductor material selection. In this paper, preliminary results are presented which examine the thermal performance of the technology. A thermal analysis prototype solution in Mentor graphics ® Calibre ® provides surface heat maps based on IC layout, material property, and geometric configuration files. Chiplets are connected by heterogeneous interconnect (HIC). Differences in thermal performance of GaN and InP chiplets are explored by varying the number of HICs. Two methods for building up the model of a test chip are compared. One method automatically places discrete blocks in the model to represent HICs, while the other uses thermal material properties extracted from the layout.

This paper presents a robot manipulator for hand-over-hand guidance training of laparoscopic surgery. Details of the mechanical design, kinematic analysis and control mechanism of the robot are presented. The robot records motion of surgical tool manipulated by master surgeon, and provides physical guidance to the trainee based on the recorded motion. The robotic manipulator can accurately reproduce the five degree of freedom manipulation of laparoscopic instrument during surgery. A hybrid spherical mechanism is applied for decoupling and reproducing the motion of surgical tool to facilitate implementation of control mechanism. The manipulators for left and right hands are capable of precise execution of a recorded trajectory with observed maximum error of 2.12 mm and 2 mm respectively during an experiment on user interaction. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

State-of-art graphics processing units (GPUs) employ the single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD) style execution to achieve both high computational throughput and energy efficiency. As previous works have shown, there exists significant computational redundancy in SIMD execution, where different execution lanes operate on the same operand values. Such value locality is referred to as uniform vectors. In this paper, we first show that besides redundancy within a uniform vector, different vectors can also have the identical values. Then, we propose detailed architecture designs to exploit both types of redundancy. For redundancy within a uniform vector, we propose to either extend the vector register file with token bits or add a separate small scalar register file to eliminate redundant computations as well as redundant data storage. For redundancy across different uniform vectors, we adopt instruction reuse, proposed originally for CPU architectures, to detect and eliminate redundancy. The elimination of redundant computations and data storage leads to both significant energy savings and performance improvement. Furthermore, we propose to leverage such redundancy to protect arithmetic-logic units (ALUs) and register files against hardware errors. Our detailed evaluation shows that our proposed design has low hardware overhead and achieves performance gains, up to 23.9% and 12.0% on average, along with energy savings, up to 24.8% and 12.6% on average, as well as a 21.1% and 14.1% protection coverage for ALUs and register files, respectively. © 2013 ACM.

Data set curation in cheminformatics is largely ignored, and many publications do not provide the specific chemical structures used in their experiments. Access to chemical structures is vital for experiment reproducibility and comparison of competing methods. To address this limitation, the KU Chemical Biology Database (KUChemBio) has established a collection of 69 data sets for computational chemical biology experiments. Data sets fall into several categories including ADME, toxicity, binding affinity, solubility, melting points, and others. Chemical structures in SDF or Smiles format are provided along with binary or real valued activity labels. Data sets have been consolidated from other online repositories and content from recent publications has been added as well. KUChemBio is located at http://***/kuchembio.

Online social networks are gaining galloping upward momentum in a quick succession ever since from their inception as they lay a sturdy platform to share the information seeping into everyone who is concerned about it. In this spirited world substantial amount of success depends on how quickly one is able to reach out to the maximum number of people. There are very few who can have paramount consideration of influence on others. Crux of the problem is to pick right people whose influence is absolute in order to diffuse the influence with minimum effort. These seeding people can in turn be used to make an upward notion in areas like politics, all types of education including health and farming, introduce a product or service in the market, to revolutionize any formal setup environment of both private and public, training employees, changes in thinking patterns of the society and its life style, to propagate superior deliberations in the minds of people and likewise. In this paper Pareto front function is used to identify the eminent leaders which is followed by the empirical analysis of the results of evolution of their influence.

We introduce an accurate and efficient method to extract high-frequency parallel admittance (capacitance and conductance) among multiple Through-Silicon-Vias (TSVs). Our method utilize the analytical expression of TSV's MOS capacitance and the 3D quasi-electrostatic (QES) scalar potential Green's function in layered media for extracting the inverse of complex capacitance matrix of TSV segments, with consideration of low conductivity silicon bulk region and high conductivity well regions with V DD/VSS contact rails. The elements of the complex capacitance matrix of TSV segments can be summed up to the final results of parallel admittance matrix of TSVs. Our method is verified against a full-wave Finite-Element-Method (FEM) electromagnetic solver HFSS, and shows more than 103X speed-up with good accuracy in the frequency range from digital circuit clock frequency to 100 GHz (

Interactions between proteins and small-molecule chemicals modulate many protein functions and biological processes, and identifying these interactions is a crucial step in modern drug discovery. Supervised learning methods for predicting protein-chemical interactions (PCI) have been widely studied, but their performance is largely limited by insufficient availability of binding data for many proteins. In addition, many complex diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and cancers are found associated with multiple target proteins. Chemicals that selectively modulate only one of these target proteins are unable to effectively conquer these diseases. In this paper we propose two multi-task learning (MTL) algorithms for predicting active compounds of multiple proteins related to the same diseases, some of which may have very few binding examples. In the first method we optimize the likelihood of compound features with a Gaussian prior, while the second method boosts compound features using a number of independent boosting classifiers. Experimental studies demonstrate significant performance improvement of our MTL methods over baseline methods. Our MTL methods are also able to accurately identify promiscuous compounds that interact with multiple related proteins. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

It is not easy to align DNA sequences of whole genomes to find some useful biomarkers(in general term), as whole genome has more than 10 mega bases. Thus, we do not apply the straightforward Smith-Waterman O(N2) time and space algorithms. If some specific DNA segments in which we are interested are very sparse, then the O(n2) dynamic programming algorithm for aligning those are inefficient since that algorithm depends on the total length of the input string rather than the number of markers appearing on it. When we consider the retro-element over the whole genome, this problem becomes very clear since the size of whole genome is much more than a few(about 10-20) retro-elements we want to compare. In this paper we propose another alignment problem that consists of only two kinds of symbols, retro-elements and other general symbols. Thus, the whole genome can be regarded as a binary string of '1'(retroelement) and '0'(others). We propose an alignment algorithm for simplified binary string to reveal the structural similarity of retro-elements over two different genomes. The time complexity of this algorithm is O(M 2), where M denotes the number of retro-elements appearing in the genomes. We studied structural similarities of all HERV(Human Endogenous RetroViruses) element of four typical primates including Human, Chimpanzees, Orangutan and Rhesus monkey to show the usefulness of our algorithm. Our system successfully revealed the similarity distribution of retro elements for the four primates. © 2011 IEEE.
