Multiresolution geometry streaming has been well studied in recent years. The client can progressively visualize a triangle mesh from the coarsest resolution to the finest one while a server successively transmits detail information. However the streaming order of the detail data usually depends only on the geometric importance, since basically a mesh simplification process is performed backwards in the streaming. Consequently, the resolution of the model changes globally during streaming even if the client does not want to download detail information for the invisible parts from a given view point. In this paper we introduce a novel framework for view-dependent streaming of multiresolution meshes. The transmission order of the detail data can be adjusted dynamically according to the visual importance with respect to the client's current view point. By adapting the truly selective refinement scheme for progressive meshes, our framework provides efficient view-dependent streaming that minimizes memory cost and network communication overhead. Furthermore, we reduce the per-client session data on the server side by using a special data structure for encoding which vertices have already been transmitted to each client. Experimental results indicate that our framework is efficient enough for a broadcast scenario where one server streams geometry data to multiple clients with different view points.

A method for quantitative assessment of tree structures is reported allowing evaluation of airway tree morphology and its associated function. Our skeletonization and branch–point identification method provides a basis for tree quantification or tree matching, tree–branch diameter measurement in any orientation, and labeling individual branch segments. All main components of our method were specifically developed to deal with imaging artifacts typically present in volumetric medical image data. The proposed method has been tested in a computer phantom subjected to changes of its orientation as well as in repeatedly CT-scanned rigid and rubber plastic phantoms. In this paper, validation is reported in six in vivo scans of the human chest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Although there are many voice systems that can act as user interfaces for visually impaired people, there is still a problem with explaining more complicated structures to these users (such as mathematical equations, logical proofs, chemical formulas etc.) through speech. The output of such an interface is then reduced to a text reader. The problem is that we have lost (graphic) information about the structure, which is 2-dimensional. Within this paper we will describe a solution to this problem. We will concentrate on the structure of expressions and on reading logical proofs. We will present a preliminary design for a new markup language to describe the structure of logical proof and a method of how to present it to users by using speech efficiently. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

An algorithm for segmenting coronary artery from X-ray angiograms as the computer-aided analysis is presented in this paper. It is a fundamental issue in medical imaging system. When a surgeon operates the percutaneous coronary intervention, he references a structure of coronary artery of X-ray angiogram. Therefore, it is important to clearly recognize the coronary artery structure for the correct operation. The artery segmentation by the proposed method makes it easy to understand structure of main coronary artery. This paper describes the algorithm of four phases to segment the coronary artery: a) filtering out noises of X-ray angiogram and enhancing the vessel boundaries, b) automatic segmentation of the main coronary artery using Canny edge detection and adaptive region growing, c) interactive segmentation, to correct unresolved regions, and finally d) compensation of the coronary artery using the morphology method. We have applied our approach to X-ray angiograms of normal and occluded arteries and the results have been validated by clinicians.

Ultrasonic imaging provides an efficient, non-invasive way to measure the carotid artery, but automatic measurement is hampered by the speckled images that are obtained. The speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion filter is effective for this problem, but requires positive values in all pixels of the image. To avoid this drawback, we operate the SRAD filter within a limited region of interest in a preprocessing step, which improves its performance and reduces the computing time required. And then, using a radial examination technique and a B-spline curve, we reconstitute the outline of the carotid artery. The utility of the resulting images have been clinically verified.

We consider the problem of representing size information in the edges and vertices of a planar graph. Such information can be used, for example, to depict a network of computers and information traveling through the network. We present an efficient linear-time algorithm which draws edges and vertices of varying 2-dimensional areas to represent the amount of information flowing through them. The algorithm avoids all occlusions of nodes and edges, while still drawing the graph on a compact integer grid. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

This paper presents the haptic interaction method when the interaction occurs at several points simultaneously. In many virtual training systems that interact with a virtual object, the haptic interface is modeled as a point. However, in the real world, the portion interacting with real material is not a point but rather multiple points, i.e., an area. In this paper, we address an areabased haptic rendering technique that enables the user to distinguish hard regions from softer ones by providing the distributed reflected force and the sensation of rotation at the boundary. We have used a shape retaining chain linked model that is suitable for real-time applications in order to develop a fast areabased volume haptic rendering method for volumetric objects. We experimented with homogeneous and non-homogeneous virtual objects consisting of 421,875 (75x75x75) volume elements. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In this paper, we present a guided interaction approach for architectural design in a table-type VR environment (virtual table). By making it easier to communicate between two or more people in a virtual space, the virtual table is effectively used in architectural visualization, medical visualization, and scientific visualization. However, most applications provide simple functions with easy handling or focus on visualization because accurate interaction on the virtual table is not easy. We developed a table-type VR tool for architectural design using guided 3-D interaction techniques. It consists of the interactive VR modeler, the architectural interpreter and the hybrid tracker. We also introduce architectural design process from the very initial stage to the final one by using our tool. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

New test point selection algorithms to improve test point insertion quality and performance of multi-phase test point insertion scheme, while reducing the memory requirement of the analyses are proposed. A new memory efficient probabilistic fault simulation method, which also handles the reconvergences to a limited extent for increased accuracy, is introduced. Synergistic control point insertion is targeted for higher test point insertion quality. Experiments conducted on various large industrial circuits demonstrate the effectiveness of the new algorithms.

We present a new symbolic algorithm for reachability analysis in sequential circuits. Using don't cares from the computed reachable states, we introduce flexibility in choosing the transition relation, which can be used to minimize its Binary Decision Diagram (BDD). This can reduce the time-consuming image computation step. The technique is implemented and integrated in our equivalence checking system M-CHECK and its efficiency is shown on the ISCAS-89 benchmark circuits. © 2001 IEEE.
