Semantic Segmentation for Thermal images: A Comparative Survey

Semantic segmentation is a challenging task since it requires excessively more low-level spatial information of the image compared to other computer vision problems. The accuracy of pixel-level classification can be affected by many factors, such as imaging limitations and the ambiguity of object boundaries in an image. Conventional methods exploit three-channel RGB images captured in the visible spectrum with deep neural networks (DNN). Thermal images can significantly contribute during the segmentation since thermal imaging cameras are capable of capturing details despite the weather and illumination conditions. Using infrared spectrum in semantic segmentation has many real-world use cases, such as autonomous driving, medical imaging, agriculture, defense industry, etc. Due to this wide range of use cases, designing accurate semantic segmentation algorithms with the help of infrared spectrum is an important challenge. One approach is to use both visible and infrared spectrum images as inputs. These methods can accomplish higher accuracy due to enriched input information, with the cost of extra effort for the alignment and proc.ssing of multiple inputs. Another approach is to use only thermal images, enabling less hardware cost for smaller use cases. Even though there are multiple surveys on semantic segmentation methods, the literature lacks a comprehensive survey centered explicitly around semantic segmentation using infrared spectrum. Atmospheric turbulence has a degrading effect on the image quality of long-range observation systems. As a result of various elements such as temperature, wind velocity, humidity, etc., turbulence is characterized by random fluctuations in the refractive index of the atmosphere. It is a phenomenon that may occur in various imaging spectra such as the visible or the infrared bands. In this paper, we analyze the effects of atmospheric turbulence on object detection performance in thermal imagery. We use a geometric turbulence model to simulate turbulence effects on a medium-scale thermal image set, namely "FLIR ADAS v2". We apply thermal domain adaptation to state-of-the-art object detectors and propose a data augmentation strategy to increase the performance of object detectors which utilizes turbulent images in different severity levels as training data. Our results show that the proposed data augmentation strategy yields an increase in performance for both turbulent and non-turbulent thermal test images. © 2022, CC BY.

Visual illusions also deceive convolutional neural networks: Analysis and implications

Visual illusions allow researchers to devise and test new models of visual perception. Here we show that artificial neural networks trained for basic visual tasks in natural images are deceived by brightness and color illusions, having a response that is qualitatively very similar to the human achromatic and chromatic contrast sensitivity functions, and consistent with natural image statistics. We also show that, while these artificial networks are deceived by illusions, their response might be significantly different to that of humans. Our results suggest that low-level illusions appear in any system that has to perform basic visual tasks in natural environments, in line with error minimization explanations of visual function, and they also imply a word of caution on using artificial networks to study human vision, as previously suggested in other contexts in the vision science literature. We introduce a nonparametric approach to multiscale segmentation of images using a hierarchical matrix analysis framework called diffusion wavelets. This approach benefits from the advantages of both graph theory and wavelet transform. Till now a broad range of multiscale transforms like wavelets (and other x-lets) have been introduced for image segmentation task. The graph theoretic formulation of grouping is also well-known to deal with this problem. The combination of multiscale transforms and graph based partitioning results in a scale-spectral method exploring through different scales of the image, over a great deal of spectral methods in graph partitioning. The method constructs multiscale basis functions and a series of dilation and orthogonalizations build a hierarchy, automatically. At each level, a set of basis functions is built by applying dyadic powers of a diffusion operator on the bases at the lower level. Two approaches are proposed for multiscale segmentation of images using diffusion wavelets. The first method is based on extended bases functions at each level and designing a competition between the bases value for partitioning. The second approach is defining a new distance for each level and clustering based on such distances.

The objective of this paper is to study rate-distortion properties of a quantized Bernoulli-Generalized Gaussian source. Such source model has been found to be well-adapted for signals having a sparse representation in a transformed domain. We provide here accurate approximations of the entropy and the distortion functions evaluated through a p-th order error measure. These theoretical results are then validated experimentally. Finally, the benefit that can be drawn from the proposed approximations in bit allocation problems is illustrated for a wavelet-based compression scheme.

Due to the great interest of stereo images in several applications, it becomes mandatory to improve the efficiency of existing coding techniques. For this purpose, many research works have been developed. The basic idea behind most of the reported methods consists of applying an inter-view prediction via the estimated disparity map followed by a separable wavelet transform. In this paper, we propose to use a two-dimensional non separable decomposition based on the concept of vector lifting scheme. Furthermore, we focus on the optimization of all the lifting operators employed with the left and right images. Experimental results carried out on different stereo images show the benefits which can be drawn from the proposed coding method. © 2012 EURASIP.
