In this paper, we present a methodology for drones for recognizing different types of objects in maritime areas. The concept and the aim is to assist the national maritime surveillance authorities in the identification of treats and the recognition of the exact type of the treat. The methodology relies on the use of deep learning networks and YOLO framework as well as regression models. The YOLO model detects where each object is and which label should be applied. In this way, object detection is subject to the analysis of Machine Learning-based approaches and Deep Learning-based approaches providing more information about the video or an image than traditional approaches to recognition. These approaches are used to identify groups of pixels that may individually belong to an object. This then feeds a regression model with the help of a convolutional neural network and more specifically, R-CNN, Fast R-CNN, Faster R-CNN and after that object detection algorithm approximates the location of the object and gives its label at the same time. The purpose of the application is to detect objects with an emphasis on identifying one or more targets of interest from data of a video or an image capture. An experimental study was conducted in real-world conditions and revealed quite interesting findings.

Neuro-symbolic approaches combine neural and symbolic methods. This paper explores aspects regarding the reasoning mechanisms of two neuro-symbolic approaches, that is, neurules and connectionist expert systems. Both of them provide reasoning and explanation facilities. Neurules are a type of neuro-symbolic rules tightly integrating the neural and symbolic components and giving pre-eminence to the symbolic component. Connectionist expert systems give pre-eminence to the connectionist component. The aspects explored in this paper have not been previously addressed. As far as neurules are concerned, an aspect playing a role in conflict resolution (i.e., order of neurules) is explored. Experimental results show an improvement in reasoning efficiency. As far as connectionist expert systems are concerned, variations of the reasoning mechanism are explored. Experimental results show that none of the alternative versions of the reasoning mechanism outperforms the others in all cases. © 2021 IEEE.

Nowadays, the trend for home workouts is getting more and more popular. The growth of wearable fitness trackers from basic accelerometers, pedometers, pulse detectors, and ECGs also supports the advancement of personal fitness monitoring. Everyone has a distinct level of fitness, in theory. The heart rate, which is correlated with physical activity, such as sports, demonstrates how this organ functions. As the muscles work harder at a high intensity, the heart rate will also rise. This paper presents the design and implementation of a multimodal wearable heart rate monitoring system. The software is Android-based and is designed to be able to receive heart rate data sent by two different wearable heart rate monitors simultaneously using Bluetooth low-energy protocol. One uses an optical heart monitor and the other uses an electrocardiogram or ECG. The implementation also includes IoT for real-time data acquisition and a web-based application for wider accessibility. The system is evaluated by collecting packets from two devices for 60 minutes. The results underscore the feasibility of the system in collecting users’ heart rate data either using different devices. Furthermore, it serves as a foundation for future studies aiming to expand the personalization capabilities of wearable devices in healthcare and fitness.

The trilemma trade-off problem between decentralisation, scalability, and security states that in blockchain systems the above properties are negatively correlated. Infrastructure, node configuration, choice of Consensus Protocol, and complexity of the underlying application are cited among the factors that affect the balance of the trade-off. Given that Blockchains are complex, dynamic systems, a dynamic approach to their management and reconfiguration at runtime is deemed necessary to reflect the changes in the state of the infrastructure and application. This work proposes the use of Digital Twins as the means of optimising the trilemma trade-off of blockchain i.e., re-configuring system parameters such as to maximise scalability, decentralisation and security. Specifically, through a bi-directional feedback loop between the system and the digital twin, simulation, what-if analysis and machine learning techniques will be employed for the computation of an optimal configuration given the current system state. Furthermore, a dynamic update mechanism is proposed to allow for blockchain reconfiguration without violating the decentralisation of the system.

This paper studies the complex ecological dynamics of Batumi on the Black Sea coast, through adetailed analysis of environmental factors and their impact. We use Business Intelligence (BI) methods to explore the complex interactions between natural and human impacts on the local ecosystems. By using data-focused approaches, including statistical analysis and predictive modeling, we aim to distinguish patterns and trends in ecological dynamics. This study aspires to make clear the complex relationships between environmental factors such as climate change, pollution levels, habitat degradation, and biodiversity loss, and their impacts on the coastal ecosystem of Batumi. Through this study, we aim to provide valuable information on sustainable management practices and conservation measures to protect the ecological integrity of this important coastal region.

Digital Twin (DT) is a virtual replica of a physical system that is constantly receiving information from different data sources, enhancing its operations and processes through data analytics, predictions and simulations. The development of DTs relies on advancements in cutting-edge technologies namely IoT, Big data, Cloud computing and Artificial Intelligence; and although it was initially conceived in manufacturing, it is currently contributing to the digital transformation of several fields including aeronautics, healthcare, urban planning and agriculture. The existing body of research suggests that it will be expanded in the next few years with the implementation of sophisticated applications, therefore different proposals to achieve collective work between DTs have been investigated. Nevertheless, much research is needed to develop and validate appropriate mechanisms to ensure its successful deployment in complex real-world cases that require collaboration among individual systems. A Federated Digital Twin (FDT) has been identified as a promising solution for this approach, since it allows the interconnection among autonomous DTs in the virtual space, leveraging their advantages and enabling interaction, collaboration and shared learning. Additionally, since a FDT is envisaged as a network of cooperative DTs, cognitive principles can be applied to assist the overall operations through knowledge acquisition and reasoning, leading to an informed and intelligent decision making. This study aims to expand the FDT concept, develop mechanisms for coordination and synchronization based on well-defined FDT goals and connectionism theory. Furthermore, four architectural styles are provided to enable the integration of collaborative DTs within a federated environment, aiming to improve the operations in complex real-world systems.

Nowadays, photonic analog computing in the form of neuromorphic photonics or photonic neural networks has resulted in powerful hardware platforms that accelerate difficult tasks with marginal power consumption. Although linear transformations are efficiently carried out in the optical domain, nonlinear transformations are also of paramount importance. Here, we propose four wave mixing (FWM) process as an elegant solution for the generation of diverse nonlinear higher order products of an original signal. On one hand, these products can act as activation functions in different types of neural networks, either recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and reservoir computers or in any other type of brain-inspired frameworks. On the other hand, the same products can form the basis for polynomial regression which is a very powerful technique used in machine learning in different tasks i.e. for the prediction of COVID-19 transmission [1].

Network Virtualization (NV) has proved a promising technology that allows multiple heterogeneous Virtual Networks (VNs) to operate simultaneously on the same infrastructure. Dynamic Virtual Network Embedding (NVE) has emerged as an enabler of elasticity and scalability in the VN deployment and resource allocation of the physical infrastructure. However, the key challenge in realizing NV in a sustainable way is how to dynamically embed VNs efficiently into physical network, which is defined as the VNE problem. To address this challenge, this paper proposes an approach that leverages Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) to solve the dynamic VNE of VNs for 5G/6G communication systems. The proposed framework consists of multiple horizontally distributed RL agents that co-operate to devise temporally dynamic VNE placements. The key contributions of this work are introducing a novel dynamic VNE orchestration framework for multi-domain networks based on Distributed RL, providing a scalable VNE framework targeted to Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) services, evaluating and comparing the proposed algorithm with existing solutions in the state of the art. The paper concludes that there is a significant improvement in latency of 144.191% when compared to the baselines.

Semantic segmentation can be applied to a wide range of applications. One of the most interesting is medical image analysis. Applying semantic segmentation techniques in that field has great potential to assist physicians in diagnosing and analysing medical scans for the patient's benefit. Traditionally, several techniques have been applied in order to perform semantic segmentation. However, with the development of Deep Learning methods, there was a paradigm shift. Deep learning techniques are able to achieve great results, comparable to human-level performance. In order to achieve state-of-the-art results, researchers have to lean on the task of designing novel deep neural network architectures. That process is very time-consuming and heavily relies on experience and expert knowledge. Neural architecture search is the process of automatising the search for new deep neural network architectures. Quantum-Inspired Neural Architecture Search is a neural architecture search algorithm that leverages the benefits of quantum-inspired computing to search for neural network architectures efficiently. In this work, we adapt this to search for semantic segmentation neural networks and apply it to medical image analysis. The Spleen and Prostate datasets from the Medical Segmentation Decathlon challenge were used. Results show that our work was able to find better-performing semantic segmentation architectures for both datasets: $0.9583\pm 0.006$ in comparison to ResU-Net $0.9525\pm 0.008$ for the spleen dataset, and $0.6887\pm 0.067$ in comparison to $0.6529\pm 0.070$ for the prostate dataset.

The objective of this paper is to detect the over speed of vehicles on the roads. Although maximum speed limit signs exist on the roads, many accidents keep on because of high-speed driving. It is necessary to solve these problems through automation techniques. This paper describes a speed detection system for vehicles, the traffic police can easily check the speed of vehicles by using this system. This system consists of a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) LOGO! V8.3, two Laser sensors, an HMI (Human Machine Interface), a speed camera, and a LOGO! CMR (Communication Module Radio). The detected speed is displayed on the HMI display, moreover, if a vehicle crosses the limited speed, this system displays the over-speed on HMI, and the speed camera is activated to capture an image of that vehicle. Also, an SMS (Short Messages Service) will be sent by the CMR to the traffic authority informing them about the violation to take the necessary legal actions. The system can also store the collected data for documentation purposes. The authors describe a simple, affordable technique for monitoring vehicles' speeds in this paper.
