This paper presents a mobile robot aided self deploying wireless sensor network aiming to detect radiation leaks and to measure radiation levels, and explains design considerations to prolong network life. Special attention is given to the factors which are important for the specific requirements of radiation leak detection. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) provide numerous benefits to applications with low duty cycle, such as environmental monitoring, event detection, etc. However, the realization of these potential benefits directly depends on energy efficient and reliable communication and coordination capabilities of the deployed system. In this study, challenges of WSNs, deployment strategies using mobile robots, and energy harvesting techniques to maximize lifetime of WSNs are discussed. Also, a comparison of two different exploration strategies is shown with the results of our own application developed in C#. Main contributions of this study are discussions on mobile robot aided WSN deployment strategies and energy harvesting techniques to maximize WSN lifetime. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, gradient method is applied to the problem of satellite orbit determination. We used the ground station data (range, azimuth and elevation), for calculating the satellite position vector in the ECI frame. Satellite orbit is in the elliptic shape and satellite turns in orbital plane. Hence, orbit frame (PQW) is defined. Based on representation of input data in the PQW frame, we can define an ellipse. With the characteristics of an ellipse, beside definition of cost function and optimization technique, the satellite orbit is determined. This method, which can be easily implemented in hardware with moderate computational complexity, yield an efficient satellite positioning without assuming a prior knowledge of measurement noise. The performance, accuracy and error of algorithm are checked, by a test case. © 2012 IEEE.

Distributed Real Time Systems (DRTS) are evolving to a higher level of complexity in terms of heterogeneity, dynamism and QoS constraints, as they must interact with an increasingly demanding environment. In an scenario with distributed applications running over different hardware platforms and networks, middleware technologies that provide real-time or QoS support are gaining importance, as they ease the development and deployment of complex distributed applications in heterogeneous networks while ensuring certain time and QoS constraints. In this sense, distribution middleware technologies like Data Distribution Service (DDS) have emerged, adding extensive QoS support to traditional middleware advantages. This paper proposes a component based applications management platform built on top of DDS that provides an easy way to deploy, configure and manage component based distributed applications, while ensuring the fulfillment of certain QoS aspects. © 2012 IFAC.

This article introduces some results obtained in monitoring of long pipelines employed in oil and gas transportation. A mobile unit for signals acquisition, processing, identification and diagnosis (MUSAPID), based on wireless sensors networks (WSN) technology was employed. The MUSAPID architecture was adapted to match the configuration of monitoring system, inspired by the national energy dispatcher. Thus, the system includes four hierarchical levels assigned to: the central dispatcher, the zonal dispatcher, the local dispatcher and the sensor nodes. The sensors are acquiring the flow and temperature of oil from the monitored pipeline. Sensors distribution along the pipeline is of in-line type. Nevertheless, a cross-link schema between sensor nodes is proposed, in order to increase the exploitation safety and to reduce false alarms sending. Two independent monitoring approaches based on comparison between values of sensors in pairs of successive nodes allow controlling the occurrence of rifts and leaks in the pipeline network. One of the approaches is unconventional and uses inter-correlation between the data acquired from two successive sensor nodes, as well as auto-correlation of temperature data. A simple logic to avoid sending false alarms was also implemented. © 2012 IFAC.

Nowadays, online and real-time pattern classification applications are required in many areas. Most classification algorithms are suitable only for off-line applications. Using the concept of evolving intelligent systems, this paper proposes an evolving fuzzy classifier capable of creating the rule base in online mode and real-time. The proposed evolving fuzzy classifier is based on a new clustering algorithm that consists of an improved version of the Evolving Clustering Method (ECM). Experiments with well-known benchmark classification problems indicated that the proposal is promising. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents an overview of our published work on physical principles, applications, and advances in integral imaging and digital holography. Various approaches for image capture, image reconstruction, and 3D display methods are overviewed. Applications including 3D underwater imaging, 3D imaging in photon-starved environments, 3D tracking of occluded objects, 3D optical microscopy, and 3D polarimetric imaging are reviewed.

This paper considers switching output feedback control of linear systems and variable-structure systems. Theory for stability analysis and design for a class of observer-based feedback control systems is presented. A circle-criterion approach can be used to design an observer-based state feedback control which yields a closed-loop system with specified robustness characteristics. The approach is relevant for variable structure system design with preservation of stability when switching feedback control or sliding mode control is introduced in the feedback loop. It is shown that there exists a Lyapunov function valid over the total operating range and this Lyapunov function has also interpretation as a storage function of passivity-based control. The Lyapunov function can be found by solving a Lyapunov equation, which also generates variable structure switching surfaces. Important applications are to be found in variable structure systems with high robustness requirements. © 2012 IEEE.

We present in this paper a design method for two-dimensional two-channel sparse nonseparable FIR filter banks using transformation of variables. In a first phase the transformation function is designed in a least-squares fashion. The second stage of the algorithm introduces the sparseness in a greedy manner by removing at each step the minimum coefficient of the filter in absolute value. The obtained results show that the sparse filter banks offer the possibility of choosing the complexity of the filters and have also better stopband energy. © 2012 EURASIP.
