The benefits of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) have not been fully realized in many applications because they compete in the power density of legacy equipment, such as electro-mechanical motor controllers. This is especially the case in Navy shipboard systems where sensitive equipment is in close proximity to VFDs. In this context, this paper compares the power densities, efficiencies and costs of a Voltage Source Converter (VSC), Current Source Converter (CSC) and mixed VSC/CSC based VFDs. A meaningful comparison is made based upon an actual hardware implementation that meets stringent power quality and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. Hardware results of a CSC/VSC based VFD are provided in order to support the findings of the study. Special consideration is given to operation at light loads.

An efficient target detection algorithm for infrared sequence image with sea-sky background is presented. For the big none-Gaussian noises and the none-linear movement of the target, the algorithm is established mainly on the basis of the sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) method. The algorithm uses the statistic values of the target's feature image to change the weight of the particles which are produced by Monte Carlo sampling, and the target is detected and tracked based on the control of these weights. The difference image is used as the feature image. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and real-time efficient of the algorithm.

The main goal of eNeuron H2020 project (Nov 2020-Oct. 2024, ID: 957779) is to develop innovative tools for the optimal design and operation of local energy communities, integrating distributed energy resources and multiple energy carriers at different scales. This paper presents a review study of the enabling conditions for the deployment of integrated local energy communities (ILECs) in Europe, performed within the project. The enabling conditions are addressed by defining the key actors and their interests in the implementation of an energy community at local level and through a detailed mapping of the enabling and emerging energy and information and communication technologies at both household and community levels. Special focus is also on mapping of the demand-side flexibility technologies to understand the benefits of local flexibility and impacts on the larger systems. In such analysis, the key issues for implementation and adaptation of this new energy paradigm are investigated through covering technological, socio-economic, environmental, and regulatory aspects.

The precise and accurate measurement of flow rate in the batch flow of the solid particles is of primary importance in many process industries for the improvement of the efficiency of the system. Many techniques developed for the measurement of mass flow rate. The capacitive sensors has a significance of being non-invasive, higher accuracy and low cost for mass flow measurement despite the fact that many factors adversely affect the performance- including non-uniform flow, multiphase flow, temperature, pressure, and moisture in the solid particles. This paper covers preliminary investigations of the offline estimation of mass flow concentration based upon the calibration of capacitance electrodes to quantify the mass of dielectric as a function of capacitance variation between the electrodes.

This paper studies the ability of the exponentially weighted RLS algorithm to track a Doppler shifted BPSK communications signal. This is modeled as a chirped AR1 process in Gaussian white noise. Expressions for the optimum Wiener filter, noise misadjustment, and lag misadjustment are shown. It is shown that as in the chirped sinusoid case the error can be written in terms of the forgetting rate /spl beta/=1-/spl lambda/ of the RLS algorithm; the noise misadjustment is of the order /spl beta/ and lag misadjustment of order 1//spl beta//sup 2/. However, as the bandwidth of the signal increases the relative lag misadjustment is shown to decrease.< >
