In this paper, we propose a data-driven leak localization method for water distribution networks (WDNs) which combines two complementary approaches: graph-based interpolation and dictionary classification. The former estimates the complete WDN hydraulic state (i.e., hydraulic heads) from real measurements at certain nodes and the network graph. Then, these actual measurements, together with a subset of valuable estimated states, are used to feed and train the dictionary learning scheme. Thus, the meshing of these two methods is explored, showing that its performance is superior to either approach alone, even deriving different mechanisms to increase its resilience to classical problems (e.g., dimensionality, interpolation errors, etc.). Respiratory patterns present great variability, both in healthy subjects and in patients with different diseases and forms of nasal, oral, superficial or deep breathing. The analysis of this variability depends, among others, on the device used to record the signals that describe these patterns. In this study, we propose multivariable regression models to estimate tidal volume (V T ) considering different breathing patterns. Twenty-three healthy volunteers underwent continuous multisensor recordings considering different modes of breathing. Respiratory flow and volume signals were recorded with a pneumotachograph and thoracic and abdominal respiratory inductive plethysmographic bands. Several respiratory parameters were extracted from the volume signals, such as inspiratory and expiratory areas (Area ins , Area exp ), maximum volume relative to the cycle start and end (VT ins , VT exp ), inspiratory and expiratory time (T ins , T exp ), cycle duration (T tot ), and normalized parameters of clinical interest. The parameters with the greatest individual predictive power were combined using multivariable models to estimate V T . Their performance were quantified in terms of determination coefficient (R 2 ), relative error (E R ) and interquartile range (IQR). Using only three parameters, the results obtained for the thoracic band (VT exp , T tot , Area exp ) were better than those obtained from the abdominal band (VT exp , T ins , Area ins ) with R 2 = 0.94 (IQR: 0.07); E R = 6.99 (IQR: 6.12) vs R 2 = 0.91 (IQR: 0.09), E R = 8.70 (IQR: 4.62). Overall performance increased to R 2 = 0.97 (IQR: 0.02) and E R = 4.60 (IQR: 3.68) when parameters from the different bands were combined, further improving when was applied to segments with different inspiration–expiration patterns. Accurate monitoring of respiratory activity can lead to early identification and treatment of possible respiratory failure. However, spontaneous breathing can vary considerably. To quantify this variability, this study aimed at comparing the breathing pattern characteristics obtained from several recording sensors during different breathing types. Respiratory activity was recorded with a pneumotachograph and two inductive plethysmographic bands, thoracic and abdominal, in 23 healthy volunteers (age 21.5±1.2 years, 13 females). The subjects were asked to breathe at their natural rate, in successive stages: first freely, then through their nose, nose and mouth, mouth alone, and finally deep and shallow. Both band signals were compared to the pneumotach-derived (gold standard) volume signal. The time series of inspiratory and expiratory duration, total cycle duration and tidal volume were estimated from each of these signals, and also from the sum of the thoracic and abdominal bands. This composite signal showed the highest correlation with the volume signal for almost all subjects, and also had a significantly higher correlation with those obtained from the gold standard volume, compared to either band. In general, breathing parameters increased from basal to nose-mouth breathing, had a minimum in shallow breathing and a maximum in deep breathing. Women exhibited a significantly longer exhalation phase than men during deep breathing, in the combined bands and the gold standard volume. In conclusion, variations in respiratory cycle morphology in different breathing types can be well captured by the simple addition of abdominal and thoracic band *** Relevance— Breathing pattern variability can be identified by the combination of abdominal and thoracic bands.

In this paper we consider a minimal, linear, time-invariant (LTI) system of order n, large. Our goal is to compute an approximation of order ν 2 norm of the approximation error. For this, in the family of ν order parametrized models that match ν moments we impose ℓ+k linear constraints yielding a subfamily of models with ℓ poles and k zeros imposed. Then, in the subfamily of ν order models matching ν moments, with ℓ poles and k zeros imposed we propose an optimization problem that provides the model yielding the minimal H 2 -norm of the approximation error. We analyze the first-order optimality conditions of this optimization problem and compute explicitly the gradient of the objective function in terms of the controllability and the observability Gramians of the error system. We then propose a gradient method that finds the (optimal) stable model, with fixed ℓ poles and k zeros.

Experiment on scalable multi-user twin-field quantum key distribution network

Twin-field quantum key distribution (TFQKD) systems have shown great promise for implementing practical long-distance secure quantum communication due to its measurement-device-independent nature and its ability to offer fundamentally superior rate-loss scaling than point-to-point QKD systems. A surge of research and development effort in the last two years has produced many variants of protocols and experimental demonstrations. In terms of hardware topology, TFQKD systems interfering quantum signals from two remotely phase-locked laser sources are in essence giant Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) requiring active phase stabilization. Such configurations are inherently unsuitable for a TFQKD network, where more than one user-pair share the common quantum measurement station, because it is practically extremely difficult, if not impossible, to stabilize MZIs of largely disparate path lengths, a situation that is inevitable in a multi-user-pair TFQKD network. On the other hand, Sagnac interferometer based TFQKD systems exploiting the inherent phase stability of the Sagnac ring can implement asymmetric TFQKD, and are therefore eminently suitable for implementing a TFQKD network. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-principle multi-user-pair Sagnac TFQKD network where three user pairs sharing the same measurement station can perform pair-wise TFQKD through time multiplexing, with channel losses up to 58 dB, and channel loss asymmetry up to 15 dB. In some cases, the secure key rates still beat the rate-loss bounds for point-to-point repeaterless QKD systems, even in this network configuration. It is to our knowledge the first multi-user-pair TFQKD network demonstration, an important step in advancing quantum communication network technologies. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

A cybersecurity problem for a multi-agent consensus problem is investigated through a dynamic game formulation. Specifically, we consider a game repeatedly played between a jamming attacker and a defender. The attacker attempts to jam the links between a number of agents to delay their consensus. On the other hand, the defender tries to maintain the connection between agents by attempting to recover some of the jammed links with the goal of achieving faster consensus. In each game, the players decide which links to attack/recover and for how long to continue doing so based on a Lyapunov-like function representing the largest difference between the states of the agents. We analyze the subgame perfect equilibrium of the game and obtain an upper bound of the consensus time that is influenced by the strategies of the players. The results are illustrated with a numerical example.

The controller design for a high-order object prone to oscillations under sufficient of interest in automation and robotics is being solved. For the first time, the square root in the error growth detector used as a component for the cost function calculating unit is proposed. Justification for this proposal is given, and the effectiveness of such modification of the cost function is demonstrated on example of object. Software SimInTech was used for some calculations. It was shown that strong procedures of optimization are wide necessary for controller design.

The proposed modeling philosophy is called impulse response preserving (IRP) FIR modeling. It can be seen as a mixture of an OE and a FIR model combining the advantages and avoiding most drawbacks of both approaches. In the originally proposed approach via Gaussian processes a kernel needs to be established that expresses the prior knowledge about the process. The IRP approach is simpler, more straightforward, and much easier to understand, at least from a dynamic systems or controls point-of-view. The key prior information utilized by the IRP approach is the prior system order n. Therefore the topic of order selection is also addressed. The IRP approach is significantly more robust w.r.t. the selected order. However, an extension of IRP that ensures plausible poles during optimization allows for a sensitive order selection. © 2018

The main goal of eNeuron H2020 project (Nov 2020-Oct. 2024, ID: 957779) is to develop innovative tools for the optimal design and operation of local energy communities, integrating distributed energy resources and multiple energy carriers at different scales. This paper presents a review study of the enabling conditions for the deployment of integrated local energy communities (ILECs) in Europe, performed within the project. The enabling conditions are addressed by defining the key actors and their interests in the implementation of an energy community at local level and through a detailed mapping of the enabling and emerging energy and information and communication technologies at both household and community levels. Special focus is also on mapping of the demand-side flexibility technologies to understand the benefits of local flexibility and impacts on the larger systems. In such analysis, the key issues for implementation and adaptation of this new energy paradigm are investigated through covering technological, socio-economic, environmental, and regulatory aspects.

On the Role of Models in Learning control: Actor-Critic Iterative Learning control

Learning from data of past tasks can substantially improve the accuracy of mechatronic systems. Often, for fast and safe learning a model of the system is required. The aim of this paper is to develop a model-free approach for fast and safe learning for mechatronic systems. The developed actor-critic iterative learning control (ACILC) framework uses a feedforward parameterization with basis functions. These basis functions encode implicit model knowledge and the actor-critic algorithm learns the feedforward parameters without explicitly using a model. Experimental results on a printer setup demonstrate that the developed ACILC framework is capable of achieving the same feedforward signal as preexisting model-based methods without using explicit model knowledge.
