Vehicle-to-cloud is a network access model that aims to share computing resources for vehicles. In vehicle-to-cloud communication, reliable links are critical. Through multipath transmission, comprehensive utilization of heterogeneous wireless networks between the vehicle and the cloud server can effectively improve the reliability and efficiency of transmission. A large number of studies have pointed out that a receive butter can greatly improve the performance of multipath transmission in vehicle-to-cloud communication. However, most of these studies, which use receive buffers to improve multipath transmission performance, do not explicitly specify the design details of the receive butter. A classic design idea is to use a fixed length receive butter. However, this idea makes it difficult to determine the appropriate butter length in a complex vehicle-to-cloud communication scenario. This paper proposes a Dynamic Time-Threshold (DTT) receive buffer. The DTT receive buffer takes into account the instability of vehicular wireless networks, and dynamically adjusts the time-threshold so that the packets in the receive butter do not affect the overall communication performance due to premature departure or excessive waiting. We verified the performance of the DTT receive butter through a large number of simulations and real tests. By comparison, the performance of DTT receive butter is significantly better than the fixed length receive butter.

The direct calculation of the absorption coefficient spectra of various tissues from spectral measurements allowed to retrieve the contents of melanin and lipofuscin. In the rabbit brain cortex, 1.8 times higher melanin content is explained by the neuron degeneration process. Similar melanin and lipofuscin contents were found in the rabbit pancreas as a result of the tissue aging process. The conversion of 83 % of the melanin in the human normal kidney into lipofuscin in the cancer kidney indicates that lipofuscin can be considered a kidney cancer marker in humans.

Key processes in biological and chemical systems are described by networks of chemical reactions. From molecular biology to biotechnology applications, computational models of reaction networks are used extensively to elucidate their non-linear dynamics. Model dynamics are crucially dependent on parameter values which are often estimated from observations. Over past decade, the interest in parameter and state estimation in models of (bio-) chemical reaction networks (BRNs) grew considerably. Statistical inference problems are also encountered in many other tasks including model calibration, discrimination, identifiability and checking as well as optimum experiment design, sensitivity analysis, bifurcation analysis and other. The aim of this review paper is to explore developments of past decade to understand what BRN models are commonly used in literature, and for what inference tasks and inference methods. Initial collection of about 700 publications excluding books in computational biology and chemistry were screened to select over 260 research papers and 20 graduate theses concerning estimation problems in BRNs. The paper selection was performed as text mining using scripts to automate search for relevant keywords and terms. The outcome are tables revealing the level of interest in different inference tasks and methods for given models in literature as well as recent trends. In addition, a brief survey of general estimation strategies is provided to facilitate understanding of estimation methods which are used for BRNs. Our findings indicate that many combinations of models, tasks and methods are still relatively sparse representing new research opportunities to explore those that have not been considered - perhaps for a good reason. Low-power SRAM architectures are especially sensitive to many types of defects that may occur during manufacturing. Among these, resistive defects can appear. This paper analyzes some types of such defects that may impair the device functionalities in subtle ways, depending on the defect characteristics, and that may not be directly or easily detectable by traditional test methods, such as March algorithms. Programming Contests are a special branch in the general area of training and education programming support and cover an important role in the area of computer science. Rather than the direct provision of concepts and exercises related to programming, the main concern is on the algorithms and data structures managed while composing the solution to a problem, and the quality of the solution program itself. Training via web for programming contests is mainly comprised of the activity of producing solutions to problems offered by the online system (online training platforms), whereas a solution is a program, submitted by the student, and it has to be evaluated, in order to assess the programming performance, and give suggestions about the quality of the solution, so to make the experience an informative (learning) one. To the best of our knowledge, supporting a personalized approach and possibly recommendations given by the system, is a challenge. In this paper we tackle the problem of supporting students in their online training toward the participation in a programming contest, aiming at defining a framework that can allow recommendations, under the form of suggestions, to the learner, about the next programming problem to undertake, and that can foster motivation in students by means of a lightweight, badge-based, gamified approach. © 2018 IEEE.

Injecting auxiliary random noise is an effective approach to implementing the online secondary-path modeling (SPM) subsystem in active noise control (ANC). In this paper, a typical FIR-based narrowband ANC (NANC) system with online SPM is proposed to reduce the sinusoidal noise generated by rotating machines, especially its lower frequency portion. A first-order FIR filter or magnitude/phase adjuster (MPA) serves as a sub-controller in each frequency channel. The contributions of this work are twofold. A bandpass filter bank based on IIR notch filters is introduced to mitigate the coupling between the controller (MPAs) and the SPM subsystem, which significantly improves the performance of the overall system. Furthermore, the proposed system requires only one x-filtering block regardless of the number of targeted frequencies, which considerably reduces the computational cost of the system. Simulations as well as application to real noise are conducted to demonstrate that the proposed system is superior to its conventional version in terms of overall system convergence and online SPM quality. © 25th International Congress on Sound and Vibration 2018, ICSV 2018: Hiroshima Calling. Data acquisition is an important process in the functioning of any control system. Usually, the acquired signal is analogic, representing a continuous physical measure, and it should be processed in a digital system based on an analog to digital converter (ADC) and a microcontroller. The ADC provides the converted value in ADC units, but the system and its operator need the value expressed in physical units. In this paper we propose a novel design solution for the scaling module, which is a key component of a digital measurement system. The scaling module refers to fitting the sensor result of a variable number of bits depending on the ADC resolution into physical units. A general method for scaling is proposed and a SageMath script is presented for obtaining easily the scaling function. In the last part of the paper, the proposed method is validated in a case study, by calculus, and it is implemented on a low-cost development system in order to create a wireless sensor node. It is a matter of fact that Europe is facing more and more crucial challenges regarding health and social care due to the demographic change and the current economic context. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has stressed this situation even further, thus highlighting the need for taking action. Active and Assisted Living (AAL) technologies come as a viable approach to help facing these challenges, thanks to the high potential they have in enabling remote care and support. Broadly speaking, AAL can be referred to as the use of innovative and advanced Information and Communication Technologies to create supportive, inclusive and empowering applications and environments that enable older, impaired or frail people to live independently and stay active longer in society. AAL capitalizes on the growing pervasiveness and effectiveness of sensing and computing facilities to supply the persons in need with smart assistance, by responding to their necessities of autonomy, independence, comfort, security and safety. The application scenarios addressed by AAL are complex, due to the inherent heterogeneity of the end-user population, their living arrangements, and their physical conditions or impairment. Despite aiming at diverse goals, AAL systems should share some common characteristics. They are designed to provide support in daily life in an invisible, unobtrusive and user-friendly manner. Moreover, they are conceived to be intelligent, to be able to learn and adapt to the requirements and requests of the assisted people, and to synchronise with their specific needs. Nevertheless, to ensure the uptake of AAL in society, potential users must be willing to use AAL applications and to integrate them in their daily environments and lives. In this respect, video- and audio-based AAL applications have several advantages, in terms of unobtrusiveness and information richness. When dealing with epidemic spread, a very common And dangerous situation is the presence of an epidemic disease and a complication, especially in an elderly population or a weakened one. In this case the complication, that alone is not, in general, a fatal disease, may become risky. The ad hoc resource allocation becomes a mandatory task, aiming at the most rationale control strategy. This is the aim of this work, in which a new model is introduced;five classes are considered: The susceptible one, the class of people that has got the immunity from the first dangerous disease (but not from the complication), the class of patients with first disease, the class of those in the risky situation of having both the diseases, and the category of individuals with only the second disease that can still caught the first serious one. control actions are introduced, as vaccination and medication, studying the effects of the different strategies. Preliminary simulation results evidenced the effectiveness of the proposed approach, allowing to determine a control strategy that reduces the number of dead, with an efficient resource allocation. © 2018 IEEE.
