In this paper, a communication load balanced dynamic topology management algorithm (CLB-AODV) is proposed to extend the wireless sensor network (WSN) lifetime via managing the participation in communication process among all nodes in the network. The idea is that, each time there is a failure in the network topology;the topology is adjusted only on-demand by choosing the best path according to paths weights between source and destination nodes. The path weight reflects the nodes participation in communication process through the lifetime of the nodes. Our algorithm is based on the routing protocol AODV instead of using a separate protocol for dynamic topology control in order to reduce the routing load among nodes. Simulation results show that CLB-AODV can prolong the lifetime of the network, increase the number of alive nodes and reduce the average routing load when compared with some of the most powerful recent algorithms. © 2016 IEEE.

Cooperation degradation can be seen as one of the main causes of human errors. Poor cooperation could arise from aberrant mental processes, such as mental overload, that negatively affect the user's performance. Using different levels of difficulty in a cooperative task, we combined behavioural, subjective and neurophysiological data with the aim to i) quantify the mental workload under which the crew was operating, ii) evaluate the degree of their cooperation, and iii) assess the impact of the workload demands on the cooperation levels. The combination of such data showed that high workload demand impacted significantly on the performance, workload perception, and degree of cooperation.

Under real driving conditions, the fatigue monitoring system based on drivers' video is highly affected by light environment, which deteriorates the registration of facial information and thus the accuracy of surveillance. This paper, on the basis of AAM (Active Appearance Model)-based face registration method, analyzes the reasons of its failure when lighting conditions change and proposes an improved AAM algorithm. The experiments show that the improved AAM method can well register driver's face under changing lighting environment, and thus improve the accuracy in fatigue state recognition based on drivers' videos. © 2016 IEEE.

Vortex motions are frequently observed on the solar photosphere. These motions may play a key role in the transport of energy and momentum from the lower atmosphere into the upper solar atmosphere, contributing to coronal heating. The lower solar atmosphere also consists of complex networks of ux tubes that expand and merge throughout the chromosphere and upper atmosphere. We perform numerical simulations to investigate the behaviour of vortex driven waves propagating in a pair of such ux tubes in a non-force-free equilibrium with a realistically modelled solar atmosphere. The two ux tubes are independently perturbed at their footpoints by counter-rotating vortex motions. When the ux tubes merge, the vortex motions interact both linearly and nonlinearly. The linear interactions generate many small-scale transient magnetic substructures due to the magnetic stress imposed by the vortex motions. Thus, an initially monolithic tube is separated into a complex multi-threaded tube due to the photospheric vortex motions. The wave interactions also drive a superposition that increases in amplitude until it exceeds the local Mach number and produces shocks that propagate upwards with speeds of approximately 50 km s1. The shocks act as conduits transporting momentum and energy upwards, and heating the local plasma by more than an order of magnitude, with peak temperature approximately 60;000 K. Therefore, we present a new mechanism for the generation of magnetic waveguides from the lower solar atmosphere to the solar corona. This wave guide appears as the result of interacting perturbations in neighbouring ux tubes. Thus, the interactions of photospheric vortex motions is a potentially significant mechanism for energy transfer from the lower to upper solar atmosphere. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. We introduce a novel distributed control architecture for disturbances attenuation in heterogeneous platoons of linear and time-invariant autonomous agents that inherits the performance achievable by the leader-follower control policies. We provide a Youla-like parameterization for the class of all distributed controllers such that the sparsity constraints are imposed on the controllers' left coprime factors, outlining a new concept of structural constraints in distributed control. The proposed scheme lends itself to optimal controller design via norm based costs, it guarantees string stability and completely eliminates the accordion effect from the behavior of the platoon. The distributed controller is proven to attain global optimality for heterogeneous platoons and ℋ 2 costs and can easily reconfigure such as to remain optimal during formation merging/exiting maneuvers. The scheme is amenable to a GPS time base synchronization mechanism, allowing for the exact compensation of the time delays induced by the wireless communications.

Resource management in nowadays agriculture imposes the use of new technological solutions for automation and energy efficiency and this paper concentrates on the control of internal temperature of a greenhouse using parabolic trough collectors (GHPTC) for internal heating. The actuator for the GHPTC control system is the conducting fluid pump that enables the liquid flow into the collector pipes. Both the nonlinear and linear models are presented in the paper in order to tune a classical controller. A comparison of controller performances (stationary and transient) was conducted by simulation, using Matlab/Simulink software. Also, the gradient descent method was applied for an optimal tuning of the temperature controller, imposing minimum overshoot.

Twin-field (TF) quantum key distribution (QKD) was conjectured to beat the private capacity of a point-to-point QKD link by using single-photon interference in a central measuring station. This remarkable conjecture has recently triggered an intense research activity to prove its security. Here, we introduce a TF-type QKD protocol which is conceptually simpler than the original proposal. It relies on local phase randomization, instead of global phase randomization, which significantly simplifies its security analysis and is arguably less demanding experimentally. We demonstrate that the secure key rate of our protocol has a square-root improvement over the point-to-point private capacity, as conjectured by the original TF-QKD scheme. This paper describes the structure of a mobile robot suitable for laboratory experiments. The robot is developed with the ideas of minimizing the production costs and of executing motion commands received from an external computer that runs the (possible computational intensive) planning algorithms. The proposed system is a differential wheeled robot built based on an Arduino platform, it has a small physical size and it is capable of wireless communication. These characteristics make it useful for validating planning algorithms for mobile robots in computer-guided laboratory experiments, while lowering the expenses required by such a setup. Moreover, in order to compensate the communication delay between the central computer and the robot, an estimation algorithm is implemented on the robot for obtaining a smoother motion.

The paper presents experimental results related to attitude control of a quadrotor rotating about a single axis. The Embedded Model control (EMC) methodology is used for control design. Indeed, this methodology can be very effective in applications involving relevant disturbances, modeling errors and unknown nonlinearities, since it allows a cancellation of all these sources of uncertainty. EMC control design is performed from a detailed quadrotor model, where the actuator dynamics is identified from experimental data. The designed EMC controller is compared with a standard proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller in several tests, carried out on a laboratory testbench.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) is considered as the key player to move forward the Smart City vision. Indeed, pervasive devices can enable a fain-grained monitoring of buildings and energy distribution networks. Thus, such information can be used to enhance energy optimization in our cities. However, interoperability among heterogeneous devices is a challenging task. Furthermore, all these IoT devices produce a huge amount of data that must be collected and post-processed, thus entering into the Big Data domain. Therefore, a distributed IoT platform for energy management has to be designed for i) enabling the interoperability among heterogeneous IoT devices and ii) handling such huge amount of data. In this paper, we describe the requirements to be addressed in order to develop an IoT platform for Smart City. We also present two distributed IoT platforms we developed to improve the energy management in Smart City. Finally, based on our experience in a real-world case study, we provide an estimation of the amount of energy-related information our presented platforms have to manage.
