Since Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become the leading learning paradigm in visual recognition, Naive Bayes Nearest Neighbor (NBNN)-based classifiers have lost momentum in the community. This is because (1) such algorithms cannot use CNN activations as input features;(2) they cannot be used as final layer of CNN architectures for end-to-end training, and (3) they are generally not scalable and hence cannot handle big data. This paper proposes a framework that addresses all these issues, thus bringing back NBNNs on the map. We solve the first by extracting CNN activations from local patches at multiple scale levels, similarly to [13]. We address simultaneously the second and third by proposing a scalable version of Naive Bayes Non-linear Learning (NBNL, [7]). Results obtained using pre-trained CNNs on standard scene and domain adaptation databases show the strength of our approach, opening a new season for NBNNs.

In today's world, large volumes of medical data are being continuously generated, but their value is severely undermined by our inability to translate them into knowledge and, ultimately, actions. Data mining techniques allow the extraction of previously unknown interesting patterns from large datasets, but their complexity limits their practical diffusion. Data-driven analysis is a multi-step process, in which health care professionals define analysis goals and assess extracted knowledge, while computer scientists tackle the non trivial task of driving the miner system analysis activity. This paper addresses the mining activity from a different perspective. We believe that mining systems should be able to devise which knowledge could be most interesting to users and extract actionable knowledge from large medical datasets, with minimal user intervention. More specifically, mining systems should be capable of (i) devising viable end-goals for a specific dataset (i.e., that yield actionable knowledge to the user and are feasible given the dataset characteristics and size), based on the expertise acquired during the analysis of previous datasets, and (ii) extracting a manageable set of knowledge. Automated data analysis should fuel the next generation of medical mining systems, thus enabling users to automatically mine massive data repositories.

Two typical load shaping stabilization methods, stabilization via amplitude compensation (SAC) and stabilization via phase compensation (SPC), are firstly analysed and compared in this paper. It is shown that, though both SAC and SPC can stabilize the cascaded system, the system utilizing the SAC is unconditionally stable but conditionally stable when utilizing the SPC. Therefore, the cascaded system with SAC is more stable than that with SPC. In addition, considering the SAC can be realized by both the parallel-virtual-impedance (PVI) and series-virtual-impedance (SVI) control strategies, the PVI / SVI control strategies are also compared in this paper. The results shows that, the PVI control strategy has inevitable limitation when realizing the SAC during the whole load and input voltage range of the load converter, however the SVI control strategy does not have limitation. Therefore, compared to the PVI control strategy, the SVI control strategy is more suitable for the SAC. Moreover, in order to stably connect the load converter to different source converters without changing its internal structure, an adaptive SVI control strategy has been further proposed in this paper. Finally, the adaptive SVI strategy has been experimentally verified on an actual 100 W cascaded system.

In this paper, a cascaded control scheme for single-phase inverters connected to a load is proposed to improve the power quality and shape the output impedance. The proposed strategy consists of a proportional controller in the inner loop and the Uncertainty and Disturbance Estimator (UDE) in the outer loop. An advanced modulation method is adopted to minimize the control implementation delay and both the current and the voltage control loops are analytically investigated. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the theory.

For cascaded system, interactions among individually designed power subsystems may cause the instability of the whole system. It has been shown recently that the series-virtual-impedance (SVI) control strategy can stabilize the cascaded system via shaping the load input impedance in a very small frequency to minimize its impact on the original load converter. In this paper, a further investigation of the SVI control strategy is carried out by two-port network analysis. Firstly, it is pointed out that, though the impact of the SVI control strategy is limited in a very small frequency, it still deteriorates the performance of the original load converter. In order to overcome this drawback, this paper proposes source-side series-virtual-impedance (SSVI) control strategy, which move the series-virtual-impedance of the traditional SVI control strategy from load side to source side by changing the control of the source converter instead of the load converter. With the proposed SSVI control strategy, the cascaded system not only can solve its instability problem, but also can improve the performance of its source converter. Finally, a 100W 48V-32V-24V experimental system is fabricated to validate the SSVI control strategy.

In this paper, a recently-reported single-phase rectifier with two outputs (RECTO) is further improved to reduce the current stress of the neutral inductor in the rectifier. The reduction is achieved by moving the neutral inductor away from the path of the grid current. As a result, the inductor only carries the differential current of the dual loads. Since the maximum value of the differential current is much smaller than that of the grid current, the current stress of the neutral inductor can be significantly reduced, and the size of the inductor becomes much smaller, which helps improve the power density of the RECTO. In theory, the current stress can be reduced by at least three times and the inductor size by at least nine times. It is worth noting that the current stress of the switches and the other features of the RECTO, e.g., operation principles, independent DC outputs and unity power factor, are not affected. Comparative experimental results are presented to demonstrate the reduction.

In this paper, we study the problem of controlling large scale networks with controls which can assume only positive values. Given an adjacency matrix A, an algorithm is developed that constructs an input matrix B with a minimal number of columns such that the resulting system (A, B) is positively controllable. The algorithm combines the graphical methods used for structural controllability analysis with the theory of positive linear dependence. The number of control inputs guaranteeing positive controllability is near optimal.

In this paper we present an approach for efficiently retrieving the most similar image, based on point-to-point correspondences, within a sequence that has been acquired through continuous camera movement. Our approach is entailed to the use of standardized binary feature descriptors and exploits the temporal form of the input data to dynamically adapt the search structure. While being straightforward to implement, our method exhibits very fast response times and its Precision/Recall rates compete with state of the art approaches. Our claims are supported by multiple large scale experiments on publicly available datasets.

The ETSI model defines a generic architecture to deploy and configure virtual network functions. While many efforts from both academia and industry focus on the problem of deploying those virtual network functions, little attention has been given to the interface needed to configure such applications. This paper explores the problem of dynamically configuring virtual network functions and proposes an implementation for the ETSI MANO OR-VNFM interface that supports generic network functions by exploiting a message bus and YANG models.

On-Stack Replacement (OSR) is a technique for dynamically transferring execution between different versions of a function at run time. OSR is typically used in virtual machines to interrupt a long-running function and recompile it at a higher optimization level, or to replace it with a different one when a speculative assumption made during its compilation no longer holds. In this paper we present a framework for OSR that introduces novel ideas and combines features of existing techniques that no previous solution provided simultaneously. New features include OSR with compensation code to adjust the program state during a transition and the ability to fire an OSR from arbitrary locations in the code. Our approach is platform-independent as the OSR machinery is entirely encoded at a compiler's intermediate representation level. We implement and evaluate our technique in the LLVM compiler infrastructure, which is gaining popularity as Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler in virtual machines for dynamic languages such as Javascript, MATLAB, Python, and Ruby. As a case study of our approach, we show how to improve the state of the art in the optimization of the feval instruction, a performance-critical construct of the MATLAB language.
