This paper presents a new approach to deal with the dual problem of system identification and regulation. The main feature consists in breaking the control input to the system into a regulator part and a persistently exciting part. The former is used to regulate the plant using a robust MPC formulation, in which the latter is treated as a bounded additive disturbance. The identification process is executed by a simple recursive least squares algorithm. In order to guarantee sufficient excitation for the identification, an additional non-convex constraint is enforced over the persistently exciting part.

Questions with open answers are rarely used as e-learning assessment tools because of the resulting high workload for the teacher/tutor that should grade them. This can be mitigated by having students grade each other's answers, but the uncertainty on the quality of the resulting grades could be high. In our OpenAnswer system we have modeled peer-assessment as a Bayesian network connecting a set of sub-networks (each representing a participating student) to the corresponding answers of her graded peers. The model has shown good ability to predict (without further info from the teacher) the exact teacher mark and a very good ability to predict it within 1 mark from the right one (ground truth). From the available datasets we noticed that different teachers sometimes disagree in their assessment of the same answer. For this reason in this paper we explore how the model can be tailored to the specific teacher to improve its prediction ability. To this aim, we parametrically define the CPTs (Conditional Probability Tables) describing the probabilistic dependence of a Bayesian variable from others in the modeled network, and we optimize the parameters generating the CPTs to obtain the smallest average difference between the predicted grades and the teacher's marks (ground truth). The optimization is carried out separately with respect to each teacher available in our datasets, or respect to the whole datasets. The paper discusses the results and shows that the prediction performance of our model, when optimized separately for each teacher, improves against the case in which our model is globally optimized respect to the whole dataset, which in turn improves against the predictions of the raw peer-assessment. The improved prediction would allow us to use OpenAnswer, without teacher intervention, as a class monitoring and diagnostic tool.

control systems behavior can be analyzed taking into account a large number of parameters: performances, reliability, availability, security. Each control system presents various security vulnerabilities that affect in lower or higher measure its functioning. In this paper the authors present a method to assess the impact of security issues on the systems availability. A fuzzy model for estimating the availability of the system based on the security level and achieved availability coefficient (depending on MTBF and MTR) is developed and described. The results of the fuzzy inference system (FIS) are presented in the last section of the paper.

This paper introduces a recursive, sampling-based Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) approach to planning, i.e. receding horizon control, in continuous state and action nonlinear set-point control problems. Usually, predictive control methods for nonlinear systems aim at (sub-)optimal control behavior through solving a dynamic optimization problem over a fixed prediction horizon in every time step. Tree-based methods, which have recently gained interest in planning, model-based reinforcement learning and path planning, replace the optimization problem by an incremental probabilistic search for (sub-)optimal open-loop control sequences in the space of variable-length closed-loop trajectories. The benefit of using a weaker optimization procedure is that the algorithm is very simple to understand/apply and works for general nonlinear systems. This article is concerned with increasing the control performance and sampling-efficiency of MCTS in continuous state and action spaces based on ideas from the field of standard nonlinear model predictive control.

Climate change is challenging the current worldwide model of power generation. In this sense, European Union is promoting a deep transition collected in the 20-20-20 targets and the 2050 Energy Roadmap. These adjectives must be achieved by developing the use of clean, carbon-free energies, as it is the case of the renewableenergies and in particular of the ocean energy. The main problem with these kinds of energies is to reach a commercially mature stage so they can compete with conventional power sources. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce generation costs and increase the efficiency of the existing devices. With this regard, thework presents the modelling and experimental validation of the capture chamber of an Oscillating Water Column (OWC)-based powerplant. Although the study of the turbine and the generator may be considered a quite well-known matter, the control-oriented modelling of the capture chamber still deserves a further study to improve the power generation. In this work, a model obtained analytically of the OWC chamber is developed and numerically implemented. The model proposed is also validated and affords excellent results.

In this paper, we present a new network protocol and methodology to enhance the configuration phase of the SpiNNaker spiking neural network hardware simulator. We have developed a system able to accept and process on-board a set of configuration primitives (data specification) encapsulated into ad-hoc packets, avoiding the management of chip memory from the host computer. We performed a study of the data specification generator implemented in the host software library. Afterwards, we extended the currently on-board data specification executor to cope with the newly-formed packets. The use of UDP protocol presents challenges due to its intrinsic unreliability. Furthermore, the presence of a single Ethernet link per board, and the requirement for a dedicated processor to handle all Ethernet communications limit the available communication bandwidth. A set of simulations was performed in order to tune the protocol parameters and to study the trade-offs between transmission speed and reliability. We were able to reach a throughput of a packet every 250 μs, which corresponds to a bandwidth of ~10 Mb/s. This system is able to open new perspectives for the SpiNNaker architecture. Thus, including the reduction of the time required to configure a simulation, the ability to configure more instances of a simulation. This system could even to enable the simulation of neurogenesis.

In this paper, the fundamental idea of Incremental Granular Models (IGM) introduced by Pedrycz and Kwak (2007) is followed and their comprehensive design framework is developed. In contrast to typical rule-based systems encountered in fuzzy modeling, the underlying principle of IGM is to consider a two-phase development. First, we build a Linear Regression (LR) model which could be treated as a global model. Next, all modeling errors are compensated by a collection of fuzzy rules that capture more localized nonlinearities of the system as a local model. Here we expand local granular models into Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN) or Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Networks (ANFN) with the use of information granules through Context-based Fuzzy C-Means (CFCM) clustering in the design of incremental model. Numerical studies concern two datasets coming from the machine learning repository. The experimental results revealed that both Incremental RBFN (IRBFN) and Incremental ANFN (IANFN) showed good performance in comparison to the previous works.

Despite the enormous theoretical and experimental progress made so far in quantum key distribution (QKD), the security of most existing QKD implementations is not rigorously established yet. A critical obstacle is that almost all existing security proofs make ideal assumptions on the QKD devices. Problematically, such assumptions are hard to satisfy in the experiments, and therefore it is not obvious how to apply such security proofs to practical QKD systems. Fortunately, any imperfections and security-loopholes in the measurement devices can be perfectly closed by measurement-device-independent QKD (MDI-QKD), and thus we only need to consider how to secure the source devices. Among imperfections in the source devices, correlations between the sending pulses are one of the principal problems. In this paper, we consider a setting-choice-independent correlation (SCIC) framework in which the sending pulses can present arbitrary correlations but they are independent of the previous setting choices such as the bit, the basis and the intensity settings. Within the framework of SCIC, we consider the dominant uctuations of the sending states, such as the relative phases and the intensities, and provide a self-contained information theoretic security proof for the loss-tolerant QKD protocol in the finite-key regime. We demonstrate the feasibility of secure quantum communication within a reasonable number of pulses sent, and thus we are convinced that our work constitutes a crucial step toward guaranteeing implementation security of QKD. This article covers research into cost reduction pathways for wave energy. The primary focus is the development and test of reliable and controllable power take-off (PTO) technology for oscillating water column converters (OWC). This is highly relevant to the ocean energy challenge. Extensive testing via data of the NEREIDA MOWC demonstration project, a breakwater wave plant located in the Basque location of Mutriku, using Wells turbines and Doubly Fed Induction (DFIG) generators is proposed to advance wave energy converter (WEC) devices. The control tests involve the integration of the PTO technology within a new variable controller for OWC wave power generation plants. Due to the nature of the control law, it allows monitoring faults caused by parametrical errors or system disturbances. The reliability tests by means of analysing the electrical signals have been conceived as conditioning monitoring, detection of mechanical faults and hardware damaging also fulfil a secondary aim for the reduction of maintenance cost and unscheduled downtime during operation of OWC plants.

This paper focuses on the powers control of a photovoltaic generator connected to a single- phase grid. In addition to the solar panels, the system is equipped with a dc-dc converter, which allows the panels' maximum power point to be tracked, a single phase inverter, a filter, and loads, all connected to a single phase utility grid. In this study, the voltage oriented control method is used to control the power injected into the grid during the daytime, taking into account the grid characteristics. Simulation results are shown for the analysis of performance of a grid-coupled PV system under solar radiation change.
