The swarming behavior of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important factor to the formation of bacteria biofilm which may cause infections in susceptible individuals. A key issue in studying the mechanism of P. aeruginosa swarming is to analyze the cell dynamics in time-lapse images. We propose a complete toolkit for producing quantitative results of cell dynamics analysis in time-lapse images of P. aeruginosa. The toolkit includes automatic cell segmentation and tracking, and optional tools for human interaction. Our proposed segmentation and tracking algorithms achieve considerable improvement over one of the best known open-source software for cell segmentation and tracking. A set of graphical interfaces is developed for human annotation, segmentation and tracking results inspection and correction, which are generic and can be combined with most other cell segmentation and tracking algorithms. Our toolkit is convenient for scientific researchers to use, even without knowledge of image processing, to perform cell dynamics analysis efficiently.

Disturbance attenuation is often recognized as the primary concern of a control system. Regulation of the operating conditions is the usual task work to be pursued by a feedback controller. However, much of the academic works almost concentrate on set-point experiments for controller evaluation. Even those that explicitly concentrate on the disturbance attenuation problem, usually concentrate on input load disturbances. They exclude the specific, but usually not considered in the literature, case when the path from the disturbance to the controlled variable is different to the path from the controller output to the controlled variable. There are some process units such as heat exchangers or distillation columns where this situation may be encountered. However actual feedback controllers, usually of PI/PID type, do not take into account this situation. The point raised in this paper is that an increment of performance can be obtained if the information regarding the disturbance dynamics is included in the PI/PID design stage.

Hazy images hinder image understanding in many applications such as autonomous vehicle. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to improve image quality of hazy images. Our method estimates the transmission function based on a linear model that allows efficient computation and employs quadtree to search for a region that best represents the scatter of airlight. Experiments were conducted using publicly available images. It is demonstrated that our proposed method achieved comparable results to the state-of-the-art ones. In the estimation of sunlight radiance, the quadtree that integrates local brightness and gradient as well as spatial constraint provide a robust means to identify region of sky. Most significantly, our proposed method greatly improved the efficiency. When dealing with moderate and large size image, the improvement could be more than thirty-fold.

The paper presents an optimisation based method to parametrize input shapers with time delays of piece-wise-equal distribution. The design respects the two key requirements on the shaper performance that are the prompt response time and the robustness represented by residual vibration functions, which are however conflicting criteria as a rule. Thus, the optimisation task is solved as a constrained multi-objective problem where the constraints respect the additional requirements on the shaper performance such as a non-decreasing step response or zero residual function at some frequency points. The result is a Pareto front that shows a trade-off between the two main requirements. Next to the presentation of the results in an example, a user friendly shaper-design tool is presented. © 2016

Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET power module has become commercially available in the past few years, and it is attractive in solid state transformers (SSTs) applications to replace Silicon (Si)-based IGBTs. This paper is focused on the efficiency comparison between a SiC MOSFET-based three-port active bridge converter (TAB) and a Si IGBT-based approach. The efficiency of the overall system, being one of its ports connected to the energy storage element (Lithium-Ion battery), is tested and analyzed. By swapping the switching frequency of the device, a significant efficiency improvement can be observed by SiC power devices. Experimental results indicated that an efficiency increment of around 2% can be brought by SiC MOSFET. Moreover, the battery losses can be reduced by a maximum of 8% with the increased switching frequency. © 2016 IEEE.

With the increasing testing requirements and costs, the flexibility of equipment in use is becoming more and more important because it can satisfy the test request of different tasks. The emergence of the FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC) standard allows us to re-design I/O interfaces with only FPGA's hardware kept unchangeable. PXI-Express (PXIe) based universal FMC carrier card is developed to apply on data acquisition and storage system in this paper. The universal carrier card integrates 1GB DDR2 SDRAM and 32MB SRAM memory to provide data caches for both of high-speed data and low speed application. Also, the carrier card provides high-speed and reconfigurable digital I/O interface with the FMC connector. As the extension of PCI Express in the instrument field, PXIe technologies are capable of high speed data transmission between the card and host's memory with DMA. This paper implements the method on more efficient data transmission, namely the Peer-to-Peer. Due to the fact that data can be transferred from one card to another without utilizing system memory using the Peer-to-Peer method, the data transmission delay can be reduced and the system bandwidth can be improved. In order to test the performances of the FMC universal carrier card in high-speed data acquisition, the universal carrier card is connected with a high-speed ADC (I/O) FMC mezzanines module. The ADC module integrates two channel ADCs providing 1.5GSa/s dual-channel sampling rate, 3GSa/s single-channel sampling rate and 8-bit of resolution. Moreover, the writing and reading speeds by Peer-to-Peer transmission between two FMC universal cards have been verified up to 846.6MB/s and 789.1MB/s respectively. The results show that the developed FMC universal carrier card can establish excellent connection between FPGA and I/O mezzanine. Meanwhile, the FMC card meets the data transmission requirement well between data acquisition and storage with Peer-to-Peer and high-speed data cache.

In this paper we consider the problem of using mobile robots to collect a set of samples that are arbitrarily distributed in the environment. The robots are not necessarily identical and each one has a finite capacity, being able to transport only a given number of samples at each time. Furthermore, the number of transporting routes for robots can be also upper bounded. The problem is addressed in this paper by using a mathematical programming approach, namely developing a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP). The solution provides the optimal assignment of robots to samples, with respect to gathering all samples in a storage area in minimum time. The method is supported through simulation examples implemented in Matlab by using the CPLEX MILP solver.

The main objective of the work is to improve the clustering efficiency and performance when we deal with very big datasets. This paper aims to improve the quality of XML data clustering by exploiting more features extracted from source schemas. In particular, it proposes clustering approach that gathers both content and structure of XML documents to determine similarity between them. The content and structure information are concluded using two different similarity methods that are then grouped via weight factor to compute the overall document similarity. The structural similarity of XML data are derived from edge summaries while content features similarity are derived from aggregate of set of similarity measures; Jaccard, Cosine measure and Jensen-Shannon divergence in one algorithm. However, we also experimented using Jaccard distance as content measure with edge summaries to prove that using an aggregation of content similarity measures can further improve the results. The experiments prove that clustering of XML documents based on structure only information produce worse solution in homogenous environment, while in heterogeneous environment clustering of XML document produce better result when the structure and the content are combined. Results have shown that performance and quality of the proposed approach is better in comparison of both XEdge and XCLSC approaches.

With the rapid development of electronic technology, electronic systems are widely used in various fields, and the reliability requirement for electronic systems is also increasing. Many test and diagnosis methods have been proposed. However, few methods can be used to recognize the intermediate anomaly state between normal and fault state. To solve the above problem, this paper presents an anomaly detection method based on Support Vector Data Description (SVDD) for analog circuits. Simulation and experiments have verified the effectiveness.

In this paper, we address coordination within a team of cooperative autonomous robots that need to accomplish a common goal. Our survey of the vast literature on the subject highlights two directions to further improve the performance of a multi-robot team. In particular, in a dynamic environment, coordination needs to be adapted to the different situations at hand (for example, when there is a dramatic loss of performance due to unreliable communication network). To this end, we contribute a novel approach for coordinating robots. Such an approach allows a robotic team to exploit environmental knowledge to adapt to various circumstances encountered, enhancing its overall performance. This result is achieved by dynamically adapting the underlying task assignment and distributed world representation, based on the current state of the environment. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our coordination system by applying it to the problem of locating a moving, non-adversarial target. In particular, we report on experiments carried out with a team of humanoid robots in a soccer scenario and a team of mobile bases in an office environment.
