This work presents a failure recovery approach for foreseen failures of automated production systems to minimize the downtime of a system due to stoppages. In contrast to the common practice of implementing field control software, we suggest the use of operation states with pre- and postconditions. A set of operation states forms an operation state machine, whereby several operation state machines are used in a hierarchical manner in order to control and observe the process. The meta-model of the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is extended to combine operation state machines with OMAC State Machines. By dividing the failure detection from the process controller the necessary flexibility is given to adapt this approach to different packaging machines.

This paper presents an automatic strategy to control a team of identical robots that should satisfy a given task expressed as a syntactically co-safe Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formula over a set of regions of interest. The team of robots is modeled by using a Petri net system with outputs (observations), thus avoiding the use of synchronized product of automatons. The strategy starts by translating the task into a Büchi automaton and by choosing a finite string satisfying the formula. Three Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulations are used to find in the Petri net model a sequence of reachable markings such that the generated observations produce the chosen string of the Büchi automaton. If the string is not correctly followed, another one is found and the procedure is reiterated.

Real-time estimation/control of Partial Differential Equation (PDE) systems, especially for large-scale applications, generally involves high computational burdens. In this paper, we propose a distributed computation scheme, which can leverage available and otherwise idle computing resources to cooperatively solve the high-dimensional controller/estimator implementations for fine-grained management of such PDE systems. Such a real-time distributed computation scheme requires communication among the computing resources which is subject to uncertainties due to imperfections of the communication network. Given this scenario, the proposed approach: 1) includes a modeling framework in the controller/estimator implementation that explicitly addresses network uncertainties, 2) uses a diagonalization-based scheme where the approximated ODE form is transformed into the diagonal form before implementation in order to minimize the communication requirement, and 3) includes a filtering solution to suppress the effect of communication uncertainties. The proposed scheme is illustrated via a real-time state estimation of individual battery cells in vehicle battery packs using a network of vehicular computing units. Simulation results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the scheme.

Under real driving conditions, the fatigue monitoring system based on drivers' video is highly affected by light environment, which deteriorates the registration of facial information and thus the accuracy of surveillance. This paper, on the basis of AAM (Active Appearance Model)-based face registration method, analyzes the reasons of its failure when lighting conditions change and proposes an improved AAM algorithm. The experiments show that the improved AAM method can well register driver's face under changing lighting environment, and thus improve the accuracy in fatigue state recognition based on drivers' videos.

The Web of Data is an interconnected global dataspace in which discovering resources related to a given resource and recommend relevant ones is still an open research area. This work describes a new recommendation algorithm based on structured data published on the Web (Linked Data). The algorithm exploits existing relationships between resources by dynamically analyzing both the categories to which they belong to and their explicit references to other resources. A user study conducted to evaluate the algorithm showed that our algorithm provides more novel recommendations than other state-of-the-art algorithms and keeps a satisfying prediction accuracy. The algorithm has been applied in a mobile application to recommend movies by relying on DBpedia (the Linked Data version of Wikipedia), although it could be applied to other datasets on the Web of Data.

Existing software allows the development of high quality interactive applications that permit their implementation in laboratories, both virtual and remote. To perform an experiment, the user needs to know how these applications are implemented. In addition, when coding an experiment, the user has to manage the language in which the simulation was created and needs to handle fluently a simulation language just to perform experiments. In the academic field these simulations are used to create virtual and remote laboratories. The authors propose a tool to develop automated experiments for these laboratories. It is intended that the experiments use a powerful and simple language to improve students interaction with the laboratories. That is, avoid repetitive tasks using simple algorithms, data collection and analysis of results, among other features. A new environment for the development of experiments in the authoring tool Easy Java(script) Simulations (EjsS) is proposed. It permits the decoupling of the application design phase from the experiment design. It has been equipped with a language capable of encircling all the expected commands, such as creating events, launching simultaneous applications or modifying their variables. Set with a high level layer, the language allows less experienced users to create their own experiments without having any knowledge of how the application was made. These features will be explained throughout the paper and some physic and control examples of use, as a controller for a cylindrical and a circular tank or a motion controller for a remote robot, will be given to demonstrate the potential of this new environment. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Generator protection misoperations may intensify a disturbance or even lead the power system to a major outage, especially when it occurs in a large power plant. Additionally, the power system expansion changes the short circuit currents and, thus, from time to time the system requires a re-evaluation of protection coordination. In this paper, Itaipu power plant's modeling, analysis and coordination evaluation of the protection functions performed due to scheduled technological update are presented. Lessons learned and undesirable situations concerning operation of large generators connected to large transmission systems observed during this process were used to propose a set of guidelines for overexcitation protection coordination evaluation for generators with the same type of configuration.

Context-aware Recommender Systems aim to provide users with the most adequate recommendations for their current situation. However, an exact context obtained from a user could be too specific and may not have enough data for accurate rating prediction. This is known as the data sparsity problem. Moreover, often user preference representation depends on the domain or the specific recommendation approach used. Therefore, a big effort is required to change the method used. In this paper we present a new approach for contextual pre-filtering (i.e. using the current context to select a relevant subset of data). Our approach can be used with existing recommendation algorithms. It is based on two ontologies: Recommender System Context ontology, which represents the context, and Contextual Ontological User Profile ontology, which represents user preferences. We evaluated our approach through an offline study which showed that when used with well-known recommendation algorithms it can significantly improve the accuracy of prediction.

Cascaded Buck conversion system is a typical structure in dc distributed power system (DPS). It is known that, the interaction between its individually designed power modules/subsystems may cause the instability problem of the whole system. The traditional solution is to design this system by Middlebrook criterion. However, authors found that, even if the entire system meets Middlebrook criterion, the fast scale instability problem may still occurs. In order to analyse and solve this problem, this paper presents a fast scale model for the cascaded buck conversion system. By this model, the essential reason for fast scale intsability problem is explained and a phase-shifted-carrier (PSC) solution is also proposed. Finally a 48 V-24 V-5 V 200 W cascaded system is built, and the experimental results confirmed the theoretical analysis.1 © 2015 IEEE.

In recent years, sonar has been widely used for restoring the underwater terrain. Sonar imaging has the benefits such as long-range photographing, robust for turbidity water. However, it is not suitable for short-range imaging. Meanwhile, it also cannot meet the need of mining machine. Therefore, it is important to develop a 3D reconstruction method for short-range imaging. In this paper, we propose a Kinect-based underwater 3D image reconstruction method. To overcome the drawbacks of low accuracy of dept. maps, we propose a novel super-resolution (SR) method, which uses the underwater dark channel prior dehazing, weight guided image SR, and inpainting. The proposed method considered the influence of mud sediments in water, it performs better than the traditional methods. The experimental results demonstrated that, after inpainting, dehazing and the super-resolution, it can obtain high accuracy dept. maps.
