PFC (Predictive Function control) can be considered as a bridge between PI(D) and complex MPC. PI(D) control can have problems handling dead time and constraints. PFC handles these cases and is often better than using a Smith predictor. PFC is a simple realizable MPC which thus uses prediction and preview of key variables. PFC can be implemented via simple program code and thus has cheap license costs. The tutorial introduces the basic idea of PFC and algorithms for typical processes. Simulations illustrate its effectiveness and advantages over PI(D) and Smith predictors.

Brain-computer Interface (BCI) technology exploiting electroencephalographic (EEG) sensorimotor oscillations is a potential tool to promote neuronal plasticity after stroke and ultimately to improve motor rehabilitation outcomes in post-stroke sub-acute and chronic stage. Nevertheless, the cost/effectiveness of BCI-based rehabilitative interventions remains to be addressed when considering the heterogeneity in the post-stroke functional motor impairment (clinical status) and the central nervous system reorganization (neuroplasticity). In this paper, we will provide preliminary findings on how multimodal neurophysiological methods to asses potential recovery after stroke can be use to foster an effective applicability of BCI technology in neuro-rehabilitation care.

We investigated the characteristics of stock price manipulation. Two manipulation models were studied: pump-and-dump and spoof trading. Pump-and-dump is a procedure to buy a stock and push its price up. Then, the manipulator dumps all of the stock he holds to make a profit. Spoof trading is a procedure to trick other investors that a stock should be bought or sold at the manipulated price. We constructed mathematical models that use level 2 data for both procedures, and used them to generate a training set consisting of buy/sell orders within on order book of 10 dept.s. Order cancellations, which are important indicators for price manipulation, are also visible in our level 2 data. In this paper, we consider a challenging scenario where we attempt to use less-detailed level 1 data to detect manipulations even though using level 2 data is more accurate. We implemented feedforward neural network models that have level 1 data, containing less-detailed information (no information about order cancellation), but is more accessible to investors as input. The neural network model achieved 88.28% for detecting pump-and-dump but it failed to model spoof trading effectively.

This paper presents an easily implementable load control strategy aimed at managing shiftable loads in residential buildings, possibly equipped also with centralized storage and generation facilities. The algorithm is compliant with the KNX standard for communication of smart home devices, and ensures the controlled reduction of power peak profiles. Simulation results are discussed in details, comparing the achieved performances with the ones attainable by more complicated benchmark algorithms present in literature, and also giving a first assessment of the return on the investments needed to implement the proposed load control architecture. © 2015 IEEE.

From some years ago, development of sustainable methods for industrial applications are a trending topic, these present the steps to guarantee the current requirements without compromising future resources. New demands for law policies and social responsibility are constantly generated. This paper presents a low cost strategy to evaluate the feasibility of sustainable methods using an extension of manufacturing algebra that includes energy consumption, waste management, and food distribution, The steps to develop a discrete model based in manufacturing operations is developed, the model is obtained in order to implement a simulator which takes into account the parametric uncertainty. A case of study is presented in a high hierarchical level is presented.

The paper studies the max-min fair multicast multigroup beamforming problem in a multi-cell environment, with perfect (instantaneous or statistical) Channel State Information (CSI). We propose a new general distributed algorithmic framework based on INner Convex Approximations (INCA): the nonsmooth NP-hard problem is replaced by a sequence of smooth strongly convex subproblems, which can be solved in a distributed fashion across the cells, with limited communication overhead. Differently from renowned semidefinite-relaxation-based schemes, the INCA algorithm is proved to always converge to a d-stationary solution of the aforementioned class of problems. Numerical results show that it compares favorably with state-of-the-art algorithms.

Microgrids equipped with small-scale renewable-energy generation systems and energy storage units offer challenging opportunity from a control point of view. In fact, in order to improve resilience and enable islanded mode, microgrid energy management systems must dynamically manage controllable loads by considering not only matching energy generation and consumption, but also thermal comfort of the occupants. Thermal comfort, which is often neglected or oversimplified, plays a major role in dynamic demand response, especially in front of intermittent behavior of the renewable energy sources. This paper presents a novel control algorithm for joint demand response management and thermal comfort optimization in a microgrid composed of a block of buildings, a photovoltaic array, a wind turbine, and an energy storage unit. In order to address the large-scale nature of the problem, the proposed control strategy adopt a two-level supervisory strategy: at the lower level, each building employs a local controller that processes only local measurements;at the upper level, a centralized unit supervises and updates the three controllers with the aim of minimizing the aggregate energy cost and thermal discomfort of the microgrid. Comparisons with alternative strategies reveal that the proposed supervisory strategy efficiently manages the demand response so as to sensibly improve independence of the microgrid with respect to the main grid, and guarantees at the same time thermal comfort of the occupants.

The service-oriented environment offers the opportunity to create new applications, by combining existing applications offered as services, in order to react to the business' increasing pressure of quickly delivering new applications. With a large number of web services offering the same functionality, choosing the web services that meet best the client's quality of service (QoS) requirements is a very important task. We introduce a QoS-aware end to end web service composition approach that handles all the stages from the web service discovery step, to the actual binding of the services. This approach uses our method of expressing nonfunctional preferences, which requires minimal effort on the part of the clients, but offers great flexibility in managing trade-offs. We define a QoS preferences ontology and use it in our semantic web service selection to choose an initial candidate list of services for every task in the orchestration model. Then, one concrete service is chosen from each candidate list and is boand to the corresponding task. This step involves computing and comparing the aggregated QoS of the resulting composite services. The selection is performed using a genetic algorithm.

Currently there is no reliable mechanism available to allow continuous monitoring of all process conditions and leather characteristics inside the closed reactors during leather processing, so no real control. Conditions inside the reactors can only be monitored by stopping the reactor to sample the solution and leather. The automation systems for leather industry rely on stale centralised architecture, a critical point of failure imposing operational bottleneck. To improve the efficiency of leather manufacturing process the paper proposes a multi-agent system (MAS) architecture that is fault tolerant, and that provides high flexibility and agility needed by the turbulent environment of leather industry.

This study proposes model of the optimal motion planner and controller for multi mobile robots. The proposed controller is responsible for avoiding the collision among multi robots after generating the optimal trajectory in term of multi objective for each robot. This work includes two stages: the first is to generate multi objective optimal path and trajectory for each robot independently from the start to the goal position using the modified genetic algorithm (MGA) with A∗ search algorithm (A∗). The second one is to establish a movement strategy to let the robots navigate with avoiding collision risk with each other by introducing Sugeno first order fuzzy controller. Five objective functions have been proposed in this study for minimizing travelling length, time, smoothness, security and trajectory and reducing the energy consumption for each mobile robot by using Cubic Spline interpolation curve fitting for optimal planned path. The simulation results show that the multi mobile robots navigate successfully with avoiding static obstacles as well as avoiding the collision between each other. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd.
