This article presents the developments of a novel isolated/non-isolated quad inverter configuration for multilevel dual six-phase (twelve-phase) star-winding converter. The modular circuit consists of four standard voltage source inverters (VSIs). Each VSI is incorporated with one bi-directional switch (MOSFET/IGBT) per phase and links with the neutral line through two capacitors which allows symmetrical and asymmetrical operations. A modified single carrier five-level modulation (MSCFM) algorithm is developed and modulates each 2-level VSI as a 5-level output multilevel inverter. The entire AC converter is numerically modeled using Matlab/PLECS simulation software and the predicted behavior of the system is analyzed and presented. Good agreement is obtained between these results and the theoretical analysis. Suitable applications for the converter include (low-voltage/high-current) medium power systems, electrical vehicles, AC tractions, and `More-Electric Aircraft' propulsion systems.

Traffic congestions have huge impact on urban transportation and are even more problematic when emergency vehicles are present, their fast travel requirements disrupting regular traffic. The aim of this study is to formulate an agent based simulation perspective on aiding the design of complex and distributed control systems, such as the one facilitating the arrival of the emergency vehicles to accident sites. Thus, we provide a user friendly method for validation of traffic control systems that supports interdisciplinary design. In particular, such a simulation model can be easily used by transportation engineers not acquainted with the mechanics of control systems, as it allows for empirical transfer of knowledge from the ITS field into controller synthesis methodology.

This paper describes a model free method for monitoring and fault diagnosis of the elements in a rotor system for a wind turbine. The diagnosis as well as the monitoring is done without using any model of the wind turbine and the applied controller or a description of the wind profile. The method is based on available standard sensors on wind turbines. The method can be used both on-line as well as off-line. Faults or changes in the rotor system will result in asymmetries, which can be monitored and diagnosed. This can be done by using the multi-blade coordinate transformation. Changes in the rotor system that can be diagnosed and monitored are: actuator faults, sensor faults and internal blade changes as e.g. change in mass of a blade.

Artificial neural networks are widely used in classification problems due to their adaptability. In this paper, an original multi-layer perceptron is used to automatically detect meteors within radio recordings. The approach presented can be divided into two stages: data preparation and meteor detection. In the data preparation stage, samples are built from a number of the spectrogram's vertical lines. During the meteor detection stage, neural networks are trained using the inputs previously extracted, and their meteor detection capabilities are tested. The rate of correctly detected meteor samples by the neural networks trained in this paper is over 80%.

Current concerns about data privacy have lead to increased focus on data anonymization methods. Differential privacy is a new mechanism that offers formal guarantees about anonymization strength. The main challenge when using differential privacy consists in the difficulty in designing correct algorithms when operating on complex data types. One such data type is sequential data, which is used to model many actions like location or browsing history. We propose a new differential privacy algorithm for short sequence counting called Recursive Budget Allocation (RBA). We show that RBA leads to lower relative errors than current state of the art techniques. In addition, it can also be used to improve relative errors for generic differential privacy algorithms which operate on data trees.

The automatic meteor detection solution presented in this paper uses a self-organizing map to analyze radio spectrogram data and detect the meteor samples found within. This artificial neural network is trained using data samples extracted from spectrograms of radio recordings using a rectangular sliding window. Several tests were run to find the optimal neural network topology and duration of training. The trained network is then analyzed using a new set of data and its performance is manually validated. Testing has shown that the proposed self-organizing map solution produces significant meteor detection results.

Wearable and handheld devices, such smart phones, have come a long way in a very short time as they are capable of providing an extremely vast number of services simply at the click of a button, or even automatically. The diversity of the different embedded sensors (accelerometer, light sensors, etc.) lay the required foundation for the emergence of specialized applications that are capable of serving all kinds of purposes. By taking advantage of this specialized hardware found in smart phones, not only it has become feasible to constantly sense and gather information from the device's environment, but it has also become an effortless task to transmit the collected data to any individual or organization in a plethora of forms. This paper serves as an evaluation method for a location based Android application, SeniorTracker, by presenting a comparison between two applications that are both used for tracking down a device. While both have quite a similar purpose, the way they go about it as well as the ways the application itself can be utilized, drastically differs. SeniorTracker's main purpose lies in the retrieval of the coordinates of a device in case it is located somewhere it is not expected to be, allowing monitoring of persons that potentially will be lost, otherwise. The comparison was mainly focused on the performance of both applications when it comes to location retrieval and energy consumption while keeping in mind the respective tasks that each of them were designed to fulfill.

In order to investigate the cases in which an externally positive discrete-time system fails to have a minimal positive realization, in this paper we introduce the notion of minimal eventually positive realization, for which the state update matrix becomes positive after a certain power. This property captures the idea that in the impulse response of an externally positive system the state of a minimal realization may fail to be positive, but only transiently. It is shown in the paper that whenever a minimal eventually positive realization exists, then the sequence of Markov parameters of the impulse response admits decimated subsequences for which minimal positive realizations exist and can be obtained by downsampling the eventually positive realization.
