Hepatitis C is a major public health problem in the United States and worldwide. Outbreaks of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections associated with unsafe injection practices, drug diversion, and other exposures to blood are difficult to detect and investigate. Molecular analysis has been frequently used in the study of HCV outbreaks and transmission chains;helping identify a cluster of sequences as linked by transmission if their genetic distances are below a previously defined threshold. © 2015 IEEE.

computer-aided detection/diagnosis (CAD) systems are critical for doctors to understand the medical images and to improve the accuracy of detection/diagnosis of various diseases. The goal of this paper is to propose a classification framework for diagnosing different focal liver diseases based on ultrasound (US) images. Ultrasound medical imaging is one of the most common modality, which is used in diagnostic systems because of its safety and cost effectiveness. In this paper, we introduced a framework for a CAD system to diagnosing three classes of focal liver diseases, which are Cyst, Hemangioma (HEM), and Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). The proposed system begins with a preprocessing step to make enhancement and noise removal of US images using a median filter. The segmentation of the liver lesions regions is done using level set method followed by the fuzzy c-mean clustering algorithm. Finally, we have used a multi-support vector machine (multi-SVM) classifier to diagnosis the classes of the focal liver diseases. By using 10-fold cross validation method, we have got an overall classification accuracy of 96.5%. Our proposed system is compared with some state of the art techniques. The experimental results show that the proposed system gives better overall accuracy than the other tested techniques.

Throwing an object by a powered robot system is of great importance in unmanned environments. In this paper, we consider the problem of throwing a point-mass object to minimize uncertainty in the object's landing position, given uncertainty in (1) the robot's initial configuration and (2) friction at the joints. Our analysis assumes that the robot's throw is executed using open-loop torque commands, and it relies on the linearized sensitivities of (a) landing location with respect to release state, (b) release state with respect to initial robot configuration and (c) joint friction. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by Monte-Carlo simulations.

In cognitive radio networks, primary users (PUs) can leverage secondary users (SUs) as cooperative relays to increase their transmission rates, and SUs will in turn obtain more spectrum access opportunities. While most existing works assume that SUs are passively selected by PUs regardless of SUs' willingness, in this paper, we propose a cooperative strategy for SUs to actively decide whether to cooperate or not. Basically, due to PUs' time-varying traffic demands, it is essential for SUs to firstly observe the channels and then select a specific PU to cooperate with in order to save the energy. In our paper, this decision related problem is formulated based on optimal stopping theory where SUs observe PUs in time sequence and then make decisions whether to stop observation and cooperate right away or wait till next time slot to repeat the same process. We address this problem by using backward induction and derive the energy-efficient strategy for SUs. To validate the feasibility of our proposed scheme, extensive simulations are conducted to show the impact of PUs' traffic demands on SUs' decisions. The results also reveal that the proposed optimal rule outperforms the greedy selection strategy and is thus more energy-efficient to be applied to the cooperative cognitive radio networks.

This paper presents an easily implementable load control strategy aimed at managing shiftable loads in residential buildings, possibly equipped also with centralized storage and generation facilities. The algorithm is compliant with the KNX standard for communication of smart home devices, and ensures the controlled reduction of power peak profiles. Simulation results are discussed in details, comparing the achieved performances with the ones attainable by more complicated benchmark algorithms present in literature, and also giving a first assessment of the return on the investments needed to implement the proposed load control architecture.

We provide conditions that guarantee existence, uniqueness and stability of strictly positive equilibria for nonlinear cooperative systems associated to vector fields that are concave or subhomogeneous. This class of positive systems describes well interconnected dynamics that are of key interest for communication, biological, economical and neural network applications. These conditions can be formulated directly in terms of the spectral radius of the Jacobian of the system, and do not require to use constant inputs to move the equilibrium point from the origin to the interior of the positive orthant.

The extraction of semantic contexts is a relevant issue in information retrieval to provide high quality query results. This paper introduces the semantic context underlying a set of given input concepts as defined by the relevant multiple explanation paths connecting the input concepts in a collaborative network. A pheromone-like model based on this approach is introduced for the detection and the extraction of multiple paths of explanation between seed concepts. The exploration of the online collaborative network of explanation uses a heuristic driven random walk, based on semantic proximity measures. Random walks distribute pheromone on the traversed arcs used to evaluate the relevance of concepts in the multiple explanatory paths to be extracted. Experimental results obtained on accepted datasets and contexts extracted from the Wikipedia collaborative network show that the proposed algorithm can extract contexts with high relevance degree, which outperforms other methods. The approach has a general applicability and can be extended to other explanation-based online collaborative networks.

Wireless in shop-floors is a bet: it outlines the possibility of making automation more flexible and to simplify plant reconfiguration. However, the specific context subtends several challenging requirements, which the available off-The-shelf solutions are not 100%-ready to cope with. By the way, the potential benefits of wireless for automation are so significant that it is worth investigating novel techniques to enforce the available wireless transceivers, so as to make them suitable for factories. The Italian regional project Wi-Fact is putting under close scrutiny the context of wireless automation to identify the most significant threats and proposing solutions to stem them. This paper take stock of the project achievements at its mid-Term turning point. © 2015 IEEE.

For cascaded systems, interactions among individually designed power subsystems may cause the instability of the whole system. Regulating the input impedance of the load converter is an effectively way to solve this problem, however, one big challenge of this method is how to consider the stability of cascaded system and the dynamic performance of load converter together. In light of this, this paper proposes a parallel-virtual-impedance (PVI) control strategy to improve the input impedance of the load converter. The proposed virtual impedance is in parallel with the load converter, via the proposed virtual impedances, the magnitude and phase of the input impedance of the load converter is modified only in a small range of frequency. As a result, this method not only solves the instability problem of the cascaded system, but also keeps a good dynamic performance for load converter. This paper discusses the concept, realization and design consideration of the proposed strategy in detail. Finally, a 100 W cascaded system, which consisting of an LC filter and a 48V-12V buck converter, is built to verify the correctness of the proposed methods 1 .

FMCW radar has been proposed in the literature as a reader for long distance transponders for wireless local positioning systems and sensing. One of the major challenges for positioning and for RFID systems are the disturbances due to multipath propagation. In addition, low-cost FMCW radars are often based on homodyne receivers, where the minimum measurement distance is limited by the transmitter coupling and the phase noise interference in the low-frequency band of the spectrum. To mitigate these problems, backscatter transponders have been proposed. This works presents an actively-controlled frequency selective surface (FSS) to implement a backscatter transponder at X band. The FSS is composed by dipoles loaded with PIN diodes which act as switching elements. The transponder exploits the change in the radar cross section (RCS) of the FSS to modulate the field illuminated by the FMCW radar. This change is performed varying the bias of the diodes. The basic operation theory of the system will be described. An experimental setup based on a commercial 9.25–10.75 GHz FMCW radar working as a reader is proposed to measure the transponders. The transponder response can be distinguished from the interference of non-modulated clutter, modulating the transponder's RCS. Some FSS with different number of dipoles are studied, as a proof of concept. Measurements at several distances are provided with a 10 dipoles prototype. The tag distance can be obtained from the frequency offset between the peaks around the modulating frequency. The standard deviation error is 12 cm.
