In this paper, a landmark based localization system using a Kinect sensor is proposed and evaluated with the implemented system for precise and autonomous navigation of low cost robots. The proposed localization method finds the positions of landmark on the image plane and the dept. value using color and dept. images. The coordinates transforms are defined using the dept. value. Using coordinate transformation, the position in the image plane is transformed to the position in the body frame. The ranges between the landmarks and the Kinect sensor are the norm of the landmark positions in body frame. The Kinect sensor position is computed using the tri-lateral whose inputs are the ranges and the known landmark positions. In addition, a new matching method using the pin hole model is proposed to reduce the mismatch between dept. and color images. Furthermore, a height error compensation method using the relationship between the body frame and real world coordinates is proposed to reduce the effect of wrong leveling. The error analysis are also given to find out the effect of focal length, principal point and dept. value to the range. The experiments using 2D bar code with the implemented system show that the position with less than 3cm error is obtained in enclosed space(3,500mm *3,000mm*2,500m).

Every manufacturing process leaves on the surface of the piece a typical “technology signature”. In particular, the laser welding leaves a feature at the edge of the weld bead called “undercut”. In this work an experimental campaign has been conducted on Ti6Al4V butt joints. In particular a Central Composite Design (CCD) with the central point repeated three times has been investigated. In the CCD there are two factors (power and speed of the fiber laser) and five levels for each factor. This paper deals with the investigation about the correlation between the severity of the undercut and the process parameters of the laser welding. In particular, through the confocal microscopy, the original geometry of the joint was accurately acquired and rebuilt in order to make a FEM model and simulate the mechanical behavior using Ansys14.5. Moreover, response surfaces and level curves were carried out to understand and predict the dept. and the width of the undercut starting from the power and the speed of the laser. At last a mathematic and geometry regression was performed in order to find a unique conical curve that interpolates all the different undercuts and that varies its parameters according to the process parameters. It is established that the process with higher speed minimizes and optimizes the undercut in the joints.

Permanent magnet (PM) motors, due to it's simplicity, reliability and overall efficiency are currently taking "most wanted" epithet in the number of consumer appliances. In recent two decades a lot of scientific papers were published regarding sensor-less control of permanent magnet DC motors. One of the most critical challenges is start from the stand still, with or without load, due to absence of back electromotive force in the motor coils. Core magnetic effect which enables detection of position, when motor is still, is based on magnetic saturation. Aim of this paper is to give magnetic explanation of this phenomena, which is generally neglected in most of motor control related textbooks and papers as well, also most of the motor models are based on linear magnetic approximation of the coils, hiding this key effect which provides information about initial position.

A novel method for diagnostic of the BLDC motor magnetic saturation is proposed. It comprises of analog amplifier in the role of pure sinusoidal current source, measurement subsystem and proposed acquisition which reliably detects signal asymmetry which is directly correlated with coil saturation. Practical experimental results are presented as proof of concept with several different current excitation levels.

Hepatitis C is a major public health problem in the United States and worldwide. Outbreaks of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections associated with unsafe injection practices, drug diversion, and other exposures to blood are difficult to detect and investigate. Molecular analysis has been frequently used in the study of HCV outbreaks and transmission chains; helping identify a cluster of sequences as linked by transmission if their genetic distances are below a previously defined threshold. However, HCV exists as a population of numerous variants in each infected individual and it has been observed that minority variants in the source are often the ones responsible for transmission, a situation that precludes the use of a single sequence per individual because many such transmissions would be missed. The use of Next-Generation Sequencing immensely increases the sensitivity of transmission detection but brings a considerable computational challenge because all sequences need to be compared among all pairs of samples. For instance, our relatively small dataset of 401 samples, a total of 80200 pairwise sample comparisons must be performed, which account for 4.56 x 1010 pairwise sequence comparisons. We present a fast and efficient three-step filtering strategy that removes 85.1% of all the pairwise sample comparisons and 91.0% of all pairwise sequence comparisons, accurately establishing which pairs of HCV samples are below the relatedness threshold This electronic document is a “live” template and already defines the components of your paper [title, text, heads, etc.] in its style sheet.

The paper describes the steps involved in designing and implementing a mobile app for real time monitoring of mental stress using voice features and machine learning techniques. The app is easy to use and completely non-invasive. It is called StressID and it is available in the Google Play store. With the use of a server application presenting a web interface, interested parties may remotely monitor the stress states detected by the mobile app, enlarging the number of use case scenarios.

The paper presents some results of a project carried out within the 7 th European Research Framework Program, aimed at developing an event-driven user-centric middleware for monitoring and managing energy consumption in public buildings. One of the strengths of the designed system is to allow an easy integration of heterogeneous technologies and their hardware independent interoperability. This is a feature of great importance to existing buildings, where standing controls could be integrated with new technologies to enhance a greater building energy efficiency. The functionality of the system has been tested in some representative spaces of existing public buildings. control strategies and hardware infrastructures have been defined to manage the operation of HVAC and lighting plants. The paper focuses on the results obtained by applying the designed system and control strategies to the electric lighting plants of different office spaces.
