Wireless in shop-floors is a bet: it outlines the possibility of making automation more flexible and to simplify plant reconfiguration. However, the specific context subtends several challenging requirements, which the available off-the-shelf solutions are not 100%-ready to cope with. By the way, the potential benefits of wireless for automation are so significant that it is worth investigating novel techniques to enforce the available wireless transceivers, so as to make them suitable for factories. The Italian regional project Wi-Fact is putting under close scrutiny the context of wireless automation to identify the most significant threats and proposing solutions to stem them. This paper addresses the fundamental problem of improving the Luenberger Observer (LO)-based feedback control so that it can deal with effectively a wide range of uncertainties, both internal and external. It is shown that the effect of such uncertainties can be estimated and cancelled in real time, all based on the yet untapped source of information: the estimation error in the existing LO. The result is quite significant in that, by augmenting the LO without changing its original structure or parameters, the LO-based design can be improved in terms of robustness and disturbance rejection. In other words, there is hidden information of uncertainties in the LO tracking error and it can be extracted, often with a mere integrator, to great benefits, as shown in both mathematical analysis and simulation studies.

We consider an automated, algorithmic controller synthesis framework for perturbed nonlinear control systems to enforce complex specifications, in which an auxiliary transition system, also known as abstraction or symbolic model, is used as a finite substitute of the original control system in the controller design process. We specifically focus on reducing the computational effort to obtain abstractions, which is the most expensive step in the approach. To this end, we derive a functional to estimate the size of the abstraction, specifically, the number of transitions, and prove that after a suitable transformation the functional becomes strongly convex. Thus, the minimization of the estimated size of the abstraction is an unconstrained strongly convex optimization problem, which is straightforward to solve using standard methods. This permits us to use this functional as a heuristic to determine certain grid parameters for the construction of abstractions. We illustrate the benefits of the newly developed heuristic for two numerical examples.

This work presents some kind of a "dual" chain, i.e., a dielectric SRR matrix over non-perfect conductors such as semiconductors. For both materials, dielectric SRR cells and substrates, conductive loss is considered. In this paper, a transformerless PV inverter is proposed, which is formed by adding a neutral leg into conventional half bridge inverter. It consists of one neutral leg and one inverter leg. The presence of the neutral leg enables the direct connection between the ground of PV panels and the ground. Two main benefits are then obtained. First, the common mode currents are completely eliminated because the stray capacitors between the PV panels and the grid neutral line are bypassed. Another benefit is the voltage of the PV is only required to be higher than the peak value of the grid voltage, which is same as that of conventional full bridge inverter. In addition, the synchronverter technology designed for three-phase inverters is extended to a single-phase case to design the controller of the inverter leg. As a result, the proposed inverter becomes more grid-friendly. The control of the two legs are independent with each other, which means the controller design much easier. The performance of the whole system is evaluated in detail with the provided real-time simulation results.

Partial Directed Coherence (PDC) is a powerful estimator of effective connectivity. In neuroscience it is used in different applications with the aim to investigate the communication between brain regions during the execution of different motor or cognitive tasks. When multiple trials are available, PDC can be computed over multiple realizations, provided that the assumption of stationarity across trials is verified. This allows to improve the amount of data, which is an important constraint for the estimation accuracy. However, the stationarity of the data across trials is not always guaranteed, especially when dealing with patients. In this study we investigated how the inter-trials variability of an EEG dataset affects the PDC accuracy. Effects of density variations and of changes of connectivity values across trials were first investigated with a simulation study and then tested on real EEG data collected from two post-stroke patients during a motor imagery task and characterized by different inter-trials variability. Results showed the effect of different factors on the PDC accuracy and the robustness of such estimator in a range of conditions met in practical applications.
