Web Laboratories (WebLabs) are essential resources for engineering education. Within this type of laboratory, a new Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) package design model is shown in this work. The proposed model is based on a set of resources that form a complete educational structure; taking into account the sequencing and navigation among the elements that compose it. In addition, it can be uploaded to a Learning Management System (LMS), offering to the students an effective tool to work with web labs. The package is structured in 4 sections or pages: Introduction, Theory, Virtual/Remote Laboratory (VRL) and Assessment; where the last performs an automated verification of the work done by the learner. In this way, one of the advantage of this methodology is that the instant results of the assessments, performed by the SCORM package, is stored in the inner LMS. Some WebLabs performing this methodology are being developed in the University of Jaén. In this work, an example is developed: "Modelling of Dynamic System: DC Motor". This WebLab is used in the Industrial Automation course that is included in several Industrial engineering degrees.

Nowadays automation systems are required to be flexible in order to cope with the ever changing requirements of the applications in terms of complexity, extensibility or dynamism. The use of reconfiguration techniques helps to meet these demanding requirements, but at the same time increase the complexity of the systems. This paper presents a supervisor architecture that allows maintaining the availability of a control system in spite of failures such as a node crash, by means of reconfigurations at the control level. Peer-assessment can be used to evaluate the knowledge level achieved by learners, while exposing them to a significant leaning activity at the same time. Here we see an approach to semi-automatic grading of school works. It is based on peer-assessment of answers to open ended questions (“open answers”), supported by the teacher grading activity performed on a portion of the answers. The methodology we present is based on a representation of student model and answers through Bayesian networks. It supports grading in a six-values scale (the widely used “A” to “F” scale). The experiments we present test the possibility to model the fact that knowledge required to perform some work is preparatory to that required for a subsequent one. The experiments have been conducted using the web-based system OpenAnswer and were meant to collect datasets, to be exploited in order to evaluate the various algorithms, settings and termination conditions better to be applied in order to have a reliable set of grading out of the learners' peer-assessment process and the teacher's grading work (with the latter limited to a significantly limited percentage of the answers to be graded).

The voltage ripples of the half-bridge rectifier lead to the requirement on bulky electrolytic capacitors and voltage difference on the split capacitors. In this paper, a topology for a single-phase rectifier is proposed to reduce the DC-bus voltage ripples and voltage difference without using electrolytic capacitors. The proposed rectifier contains two legs: 1) A rectification leg to maintain the DC-bus voltage and to draw a clean input current with unity power factor;2) A neutral leg to reduce DC-bus voltage ripples and the voltage difference. The two legs are independently controlled and the resulted high performance of the system is achieved. In order to test the system, real-time simulations were conducted and associated results are presented to demonstrate that the system is able to considerably reduce the DC-bus voltage ripples. With the derived system, the total required DC-bus capacitors can be reduced a lot when achieving the same level of voltage ripples.

This paper considers the problem of localization of multiple land mines using information collected by a network of wireless sensors deployed in the area of interest. These sensors detect the concentration of explosive vapours, emanating from buried land mines, in the air and have a wireless transmission system for exchanging information with a treatment or fusion centre. One of the key contribution of this paper is to locate and estimate the emission rate of multiple land mines. Using a model for the transport of the explosive chemicals in the air, we formulate the inverse problem consisting in determining sequentially the positions and emission rates of the land mines knowing concentration measurements provided by the sensors. To solve the inverse problem, we present a first solution based on a Least Squares optimization approach and a second solution based on probabilistic Bayesian techniques using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling scheme. These two approaches are tested and compared on simulated data.

This work presents a novel approach for passivity enforcement of state-space macromodels, based on nonsmooth localization algorithms applied to a convex formulation of the passivity constraints. The main advantages of proposed scheme are guaranteed optimality and limited required computational resources. Compared to convex formulations based on a direct implementation of Bounded Real Lemma we are able to reduce both the memory and time requirements by orders of magnitude.

Nowadays ICT is becoming a key factor to enhance the energy optimization in our cities. At district level, real-time information can be accessed to monitor and control the energy distribution network. Moreover, the fine grain monitoring and control done at building level can provide additional information to develop more efficient control policies for energy distribution in the district. In this paper we present a distributed software infrastructure for district energy management, which aims to provide a digital archive of the city in which energetic information is available. Such information is considered as the input for a decision system, which aims to increase the energy efficiency by promoting local balancing and shaving peak loads. As case study, we integrated in our proposed cloud the heating distribution network in Turin and we present exploitable options based on real-world environmental data to increase the energy efficiency and minimize the peak request.

In this paper, we discuss an identification of contact conditions by active force sensing. The contact conditions include not only contact location but also contact type and contact direction. The contact type is point, soft-finger, line or planar contact with friction. In our previous papers, the contact conditions between a grasped object and its external environment was treated. This paper identifies the contact conditions between fingers and a grasped object by using six-axis force sensors. Each finger has less than six degrees of freedom. Sensing strategies are provided. The experiment system is introduced and our proposed method is verified.
