Context: The technical debt (TD) concept describes a tradeoff between short-term and long-term goals in software development. While it is highly useful as a metaphor, it has utility beyond the facilitation of discussion, to inspire a useful set of methods and tools that support the identification, measurement, monitoring, management, and payment of TD. Objective: This study focuses on the identification of TD. We evaluate human elicitation of TD and compare it to automated identification. Method: We asked a development team to identify TD items in artifacts from a software project on which they were working. We provided the participants with a TD template and a short questionnaire. In addition, we also collected the output of three tools to automatically identify TD and compared it to the results of human elicitation. Results: There is little overlap between the TD reported by different developers, so aggregation, rather than consensus, is an appropriate way to combine TD reported by multiple developers. The tools used are especially useful for identifying defect debt but cannot help in identifying many other types of debt, so involving humans in the identification process is necessary. Conclusion: We have conducted a case study that focuses on the practical identification of TD, one area that could be facilitated by tools and techniques. It contributes to the TD landscape, which depicts an understanding of relationships between different types of debt and how they are best discovered. Copyright 2013 ACM.

Over the past few years, there has been a rapid growth of new services such as online video games, video conferences, and multimedia services to end users. WiMAX is an emerging technology for next generation wireless networks which supports a large number of users. To achieve Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, an efficient and reliable scheduling algorithm is urgently needed. Among a large number of the proposed approaches in the literature, a variably weighted round robin scheduling algorithm (VWRR) has been proven to provide the best performance in an IP backbone network with no attempts on WiMAX networks. This paper proposes a dynamic uplink scheduling algorithm for WiMAX networks based on VWRR to allocate the bandwidth to users to maximize the throughput and ensure the constraints of delay, jitter, and load. A comparative study between the proposed scheduling algorithm and the two most famous scheduling algorithms: weighted round robin algorithm (WRR) and modified deficit round robin algorithm (MDRR) over WiMAX networks, is presented. Simulation results obtained using OPNET reveal that the proposed algorithm has a superior performance compared with WRR with respect to throughput, delay, jitter, and load. Additionally, the proposed scheduling algorithm is shown to provide an excellent level of reliability and scalability when increasing the number of served subscriber stations.

The paper presents constraint satisfaction problem driven approach to analytical solution of the cyclic scheduling problem in the Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) producing multi-type parts where for material handling are used the Automated Guide Vehicles Systems(AGVS). Finding the conditions guaranteeing the AGVs deadlock-free and collision-free movement policy is the aim of our researches. The AGVs co-sharing the common parts of the transportation route while executing repetitive processes, i.e. being assigned to AGVs passing along machines in a cyclic way, can be modeled in terms of Cyclic Concurrent Process Systems(CCPS). Schedulability analysis for a given CCPS answers the question whether a cyclic schedule exists or not. The paper suggests approach for schedulability analysis of multimodal processes representing real manufacturing employing the declarative modeling.

This article aims to present the design of a 4.5-V, 450-mA low drop-out (LDO) voltage linear regulator based on a two-stage cascoded operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) as error amplifier. The aforementioned two-stage OTA is designed with cascoded current mirroring technique to boost up the output impedance. The proposed OTA has a DC gain of 101 dB under no load condition. The designed reference voltage included in the LDO regulator is provided by a band gap reference with the temperature coefficient (T_γ) of 0.025 mV/℃. The proposed LDO regulator has a maximum drop-out voltage of 0.5 V @ 450 mA of load current, and has the worst case power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of [54.5 dB, 34.3 dB] @ [100 Hz, 10 kHz] in full load condition. All the proposed circuits are designed using a 0.35 μm CMOS technology. The design is checked in order to corroborate its performance for wide range of input voltage, founding that the circuit design works fine meeting all the initial specification requirements.

In this paper we study state-space realizations of Linear and Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. Motivated by biochemical reaction networks, Gonçalves and Warnick have recently introduced the notion of a Dynamical Structure Functions (DSF), a particular factorization of the system's transfer function matrix that elucidates the interconnection structure in dependencies between manifest variables. We build onto this work by showing an intrinsic connection between a DSF and certain sparse left coprime factorizations. By establishing this link, we provide an interesting systems theoretic interpretation of sparsity patterns of coprime factors. In particular we show how the sparsity of these coprime factors allows for a given LTI system to be implemented as a network of LTI sub-systems. We examine possible applications in distributed control such as the design of a LTI controller that can be implemented over a network with a pre-specified topology.

A study on filtering aspects of airborne wind energy generators is presented. This class of renewable energy systems aims to convert the aerodynamic forces generated by tethered wings into electricity. The reconstruction of the wing's position and velocity is investigated here. Different sensor setups are considered, and the related sensor fusion algorithms are presented. The different approaches are compared through experiments on a small-scale prototype. The designed filtering algorithms rely purely on kinematic laws, hence the results obtained are representative also of systems with larger size and different wing designs.

We identified and organized a number of statements about technical debt (TD Folklore list) expressed by practitioners in online websites, blogs and published papers. We chose 14 statements and we evaluated them through two surveys (37 practitioners answered the questionnaires), ranking them by agreement and consensus. The statements most agreed with show that TD is an important factor in software project management and not simply another term for 'bad code'. This study will help the research community in identifying folklore that can be translated into research questions to be investigated, thus targeting attempts to provide a scientific basis for TD management. © 2013 IEEE.

Context: the presence of several languages interacting each other within the same project is an almost universal feature in software development. Earlier work shows that this interaction might be source of problems. Objective: we aim at identifying and characterizing the cross-language interactions at semantic level. Method: we took the commits of an open source project and analyzed the cross-language pairs of files occurring in the same commit to identify possible semantic interactions. We both defined a taxonomy and applied it. Result: we identified 6 categories of semantic interactions. The most common category is the one based on shared ids, the next is when an artifact provides a description of another artifact. Conclusion: the deeper knowledge of cross-language interactions represents the basis for implementing a tool supporting the management of this kind of interactions and the detection of related problems at compile time.

The analysis and grading of open answers (i.e. answers to open-ended questions) is a powerful means to model the state of knowledge and cognitive level of students in e-learning systems. In a previous work (presented at last SPEL workshop) we showed an approach to open answers grading, based on Constraint Logic Programming (CLP) and peer assessment, where students were defined as triples of finite-domain variables: K for student's Knowledge about the question's topic, C for Correctness of her/his answer, and J for her/his estimated ability to evaluate (“Judge”) another peer's answer. The CLP Prolog module supported the grading process helping eventually to get a complete set of grades although the teacher had actually graded only a (substantial indeed) part of them. Here we try and tackle the problem of grading open answers by an alternative approach, using peer-assessment in a social collaborative e-learning setting, mediated by the teacher through a simple Bayesian-networks-based model, that allows managing student models (based on the same finite-domain variables as above) and producing again automated evaluations of those answers that have not been graded by the teacher. In particular we give an account of the OpenAnswer web-based system, which can allow teachers and students to use our approach, and show the result of some experimentation we conducted.

This paper jointly designs the distributed control law and its communication architecture for large-scale interconnected systems. The novelty is to consider both, the robustness guaranty under topology uncertainty and the performance improvement of the overall system. The proposed framework consists of two steps. The first step aims at finding a set of stabilizing distributed control laws providing H_∞ robust performance under topology uncertainty. In the second step the performance of the interconnected system is further improved by searching for the optimal communication topology within acquired set of distributed control laws. In this step, the design of communication architecture is achieved by minimizing the H_2 norm. Additionally, a trade-off between performance improvement and communication cost is incorporated. Furthermore, to reduce computational complexity, a strategy to manipulate the existing communication links is proposed to deal with topology variation in the interconnected systems. Finally, the developed method is demonstrated via some examples.
