This paper presents in vivo experimental results for a closed loop wireless power transmission system to implantable devices on an awake behaving animal subject. In this system, wireless power transmission takes place across an inductive link, controlled by a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) radio frequency identification (RFID) transceiver (TRF7960) operating at 13.56 MHz. Induced voltage on the implantable secondary coil is rectified, digitized by a 10-bit analog to digital converter, and transmitted back to the primary via back telemetry. Transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) circuitry were mounted on the back of an adult rat with a nominal distance of ～7 mm between their coils. Our experiments showed that the closed loop system was able to maintain the Rx supply voltage at the designated 3.8 V despite changes in the coils' relative distance and alignment due to animal movements. The Tx power consumption changed between 410 ～ 560 mW in order to deliver 27 mW to the receiver. The open loop system, on the other hand, showed undesired changes in the Rx supply voltage while the Tx power consumption was constant at 660 mW.

A method previously reported by the authors for identifying simultaneous signals from different Tx antennas is applied for double-directional channel sounding between a channel sounder base station (CSBS) and a channel sounder mobile station (CSMS), as well as for single input single output (SISO) channel sounding on relay channels in urban microcell-type Tx/Rx scenarios. Using this method, multiple-orthogonal signals are produced from one pseudo-noise code by using it to modulate RF carriers at pre-calculated offset frequencies. The frequency spectra of the resulting signals are interleaved and they occupy the same overall frequency band, but the spectral lines from different transmitters are separable using Fourier analysis of signals sampled at the CSMS receiver output. In theory, any arbitrary number of links from different transmitters can be measured simultaneously using this method. However, in practice, Doppler spreads limit the number of simultaneous soundings that can be made with acceptable isolation among resulting impulse response estimates. Herein, examples are given of results from double-directional channel sounding using a linear array of 4 Tx antennas at the CSBS and of relay channel sounding with one Tx antenna at the CSBS and one Tx antenna at a channel sounder relay station (CSRS). © 2011 IEEE.

A good estimation tool offers a "model" of a project and is usually used to estimate cost and schedule, but it can also be used to help make trade decisions that affect cost and schedule as well as to estimate risks and opportunities. It was evident that Rolls-Royce needed a cost model to underpin decisions when they launched a software Product Line initiative. The first generation cost model was based on COCOMO II, which represents the software product as a single size measure (Source Lines of Code) but makes limited use of the architecture or any characteristics of the product being developed. The next generation of the cost model, currently under development, is intended to account for the quality attributes of the core assets and the resulting products in order to estimate their impact on cost and net-benefit to the business. The objective of this paper is to describe our current efforts to integrate key quality attributes into the SPL cost model. We describe the quality attributes selected, the reason for their selection and the benefits we expect to obtain after integrating them into the model. © 2011 IEEE.

Brain Hyperscanning, i.e. the simultaneous recording of the cerebral activity of different human subjects involved in interaction tasks, is a very recent field of Neuroscience aiming at understanding the cerebral processes generating and generated by social interactions. This approach allows the observation and modeling of the neural signature specifically dependent on the interaction between subjects, and, even more interestingly, of the functional links existing between the activities in the brains of the subjects interacting together. In this EEG hyperscanning study we explored the functional hyperconnectivity between the activity in different scalp sites of couples of Civil Aviation Pilots during different phases of a flight reproduced in a flight simulator. Results shown a dense network of connections between the two brains in the takeoff and landing phases, when the cooperation between them is maximal, in contrast with phases during which the activity of the two pilots was independent, when no or quite few links were shown. These results confirms that the study of the brain connectivity between the activity simultaneously acquired in human brains during interaction tasks can provide important information about the neural basis of the spirit of the group. © 2011 IEEE.

The human being should be awarded the championship of navigation on the planet, on the virtues that they not only have invented and manufactured the compass, GPS, aircraft, vessel, spacecraft, but also have demonstrated exceptional non-instrumental navigation skills. The Austronesian expansion from the Asian mainland into the Pacific performed by the Pacific navigators, who eventually populated the most remote islands of the Pacific about 4000 years ago, is a vivid example (Wehner 1998). However, animals, especially flying birds and insects are strong contenders. Monarch butterflies can migrate up to 2000 miles from their reproductive sites in the eastern US and Canada to their over-wintering sites in the forests of Mexico, and it is postulated that they may possess a biological equivalent of a low-resolution GPS system that is based on the magnetic field of the earth. In fact, even the long-legged ants (Cataglyphis fortis) in the Saharan desert use the dead-reckoning navigation strategy, which is attributed to the Polynesians, but the ants apparently have acquired the capability much earlier, given the relative short evolutionary history of humans. In this article, we briefly review the state-of-the-art research on insect navigation and communication used in flight and communication, with the objective to inspire cross-disciplinary studies in aerospace engineering, biology and computer science. After a brief review, we overview and identify seven cross-disciplinary research topics that may draw on inspirations from insect navigation and communication in flight and migration. These topics include: ants colony inspired swarm intelligence, honeybee inspired group decision-making, insect sociobiology, MAV/mobile robot flight control and remote control of insect flights, optimal migration strategy, Quorum sensing, and joining and collision avoidance for MAV fleet control. Network dynamics, such as mobility and increase in network load, can influence the performance of aWireless Sensor Net- work (WSN). In this paper, we introduce a method which exploits design-time knowledge of the application scenario dynamics to construct a proactive run-time reconfiguration approach. The approach anticipates for the impact that predefined dynamic events can have on the performance of the WSN by switching between various modes of operation defined at design-time. A mode defines the values for the controllable parameters of the network protocol stack. Our approach explicitly differentiates between parameters that can be adapted locally, per node, and those that should be considered globally for the whole WSN. Design-time defini- tion of modes results in a very low run-time overhead as we only require detection of the mode to use and a low overhead synchronization to change global parameters. The approach is made robust by using a recovery approach for nodes un- aware of their global mode after, for example, (re-)joining the network. Experiments with an office monitoring deploy- ment and extensive simulations of a cow-health monitoring scenario show that our approach can easily be adopted by practical WSN deployments and results in a significant re- duction in resource usage, e.g., power consumption in our examples, at a very low run-time overhead cost. The puzzles regarding the magnitude of the free electron mobility in hydrogenated amorphous silicon are examined. It is suggested that high-level double injection produces a metastable increase in the carrier mobility by neutralizing positively and negatively charged defect states thereby eliminating long-range potential fluctuations. Since these defect states cannot be neutralized under low-level or single injection, they both contribute to the modulation of the conduction band and increase the free-carrier scattering. If the latter is the predominant scattering mechanism, the neutralization of charged defects directly leads to a mobility increase under double-injection conditions. We discuss the various implications of this model, and present recent experimental results in agreement with these ideas.

Network attacks have become the fundamental threat to today's largely interconnected computer system. Intrusion detection system (IDS) is indispensable to defend the system in the face of increasing vulnerabilities. While a number of information visualization software frameworks exist, creating new visualizations, especially those that involve novel visualization metaphors, interaction techniques, data analysis strategies, and specialized rendering algorithms, is still often a difficult process. To facilitate the creation of novel visualizations this paper presents a new framework that is designed with using data visualization technique for analysis and visualizes snort result data for user. The framework suggests PHP and CSS as data visualization technique and snort as intrusion detection system (IDS).

In this paper we present the development and evaluation of a parent decision support tool for a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), known as PPADS or Physician and Parent Decision Support. The NICU interprofessional (IP) team uses advanced technology to care for the sickest infants in the hospital, some at the edge of viability. Many difficult care decisions are made daily for this vulnerable population. The PPADS tool, a computerized decision support system, aims to augment current NICU decision-making by helping parents make more informed decisions, improving physician-parent communication, increasing parent decision-making satisfaction, decreasing conflict, and increasing decision efficiency when faced with ethically challenging situations. The development and evaluation of the PPADS tool followed a five step methodology: assessing the clinical environment, establishing the design criteria, developing the system design, implementing the system, and performing usability testing. Usability testing of the PPADS tool with parents of neonates who have graduated (survived) from a tertiary level NICU demonstrates the usefulness and ease of use of the tool.
