Web mining is one of the mining technologies, which applies data mining techniques in large amount of web log data. Web navigational mining discovers users' access patterns from web logs. This information can be used to identify the behavior of the web user. However, the web data will grow rapidly in the short time, and some of the web data may be antiquated. The user behavior may be changed when the new web data is inserted into and the old web data is deleted from web logs. Therefore, the user behavior must be re-discovered from the updated web logs. However, it is very time-consuming to re-find the users' access patterns. Hence, many researchers pay attention to the incremental mining, which utilizes the previous mining results and finds new patterns just from the inserted or deleted part of the web logs such that the mining time can be reduced. The present paper proposes an efficient incremental web navigational mining algorithm for discovering web navigational patterns when the user sequences are inserted into and deleted from original database. It avoids re-finding the original web navigational patterns and re-counting the original candidate sequences. It uses lattice structure to keep the previous mining results such that just new candidate sequences need to be computed. Hence, the web navigational patterns can be obtained rapidly when the navigational sequence database is updated. Besides, maximal web navigational patterns can also be obtained easily by traversing the lattice structure. The experimental results show that the present algorithm is more efficient than the other approaches. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.

We develop real-time scheduling techniques for improving performance and energy for multiprogrammed workloads that scale non-uniformly with increasing thread counts. Multithreaded programs generally deliver higher throughput than single-threaded programs on chip multiprocessors, but performance gains from increasing threads decrease when there is contention for shared resources. We use analytic metrics to derive local search heuristics for creating efficient multiprogrammed, multithreaded workload schedules. Programs are allocated fewer cores than requested, and scheduled to space-share the CMP to improve global throughput. Our holistic approach attempts to co-schedule programs that complement each other with respect to shared resource consumption. We find application co-scheduling for performance and energy in a resource-aware manner achieves better results than solely targeting total throughput or concurrently co-scheduling all programs. Our schedulers improve overall energy delay (E*D) by a factor of 1.5 over time-multiplexed gang scheduling. © 2010 ACM.

With the advance of semiconductor, multi-core architecture is inevitable in today's embedded system design. Nested loops are usually the most critical part in multimedia and high performance DSP (Digital Signal Processing) systems. Hence, maximizing loop parallelism is an important issue to improve the performance of a modern compiler. This paper studies how to maximize the system performance with the consideration of energy reduction for applications with multidimensional nested loops on multi-core DSP architectures. An algorithm, EALPM (Energy-Aware Loop Parallelism Maximization), is proposed in this paper. We implemented a two phase strategy. First, the strategy uses retiming and loop transformation to parallelize nested loops. Then the strategy employs a novel voltage assignment algorithm to reduce total energy consumption. The experimental results show that on average, both performance and energy-saving can be significantly improved using the EALPM algorithm. © 2010 IEEE.

Dimensionality reduction is an essential task for many large-scale information processing problems such as classifying document sets, searching over Web data sets, etc. It can be used to improve both the efficiency and the effectiveness of classifiers. In this paper, a comparative study is conducted of five Dimension Reduction Techniques in the context of the Arabic text classification problem using an inhouse Arabic dataset. We evaluated and compared Stemming, Light-Stemming, Document Frequency (DF), TFIDF and Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) methods to reduce the feature space into an input space of much lower dimension for the neural network classifier. The results showed that the proposed model was able to achieve high categorization effectiveness as measured by Macro-Average F1 measure. Experiments on Arabic data sets indicate that the DF, TFIDF and LSI techniques are favorable in terms of its effectiveness and efficiency when compared with the two other methods. © 2010 IEEE.

Intelligent environments employ electronics unobtrusively integrated with the ambient to predict and to respond to the needs of people, enhancing many aspects of the everyday life. Wireless sensor network (WSN) are at the center of ambient intelligence applications. They consists of thousands of distributed sensing devices, that continually collect and transmit information about the surrounding environment. These sensors have to be energetically autonomous for long periods of time, which exclude battery use for providing power. However, emerging sensors have low power requirements, which can be met by scavenging ambient energy. Hence, research in micropower generation is gaining significant momentum. This paper starts with a renew of main approaches for power generation at inicroscale with emphasize on kinetic to electric energy conversion. Kinetic or mechanical vibration energy conversion may be achieved employing piezoelectric, electromagnetic and electrostatic methods. The principle behind each method and most recent results reported in literature are reviewed. The second part of the paper discusses a new concept for mechanical vibration energy harvesting employing electrostatic transduction via comb-like variable capacitors, with a dielectric constant switching between air and liquid. This approach may lead to four orders of magnitude increase in energy conversion as compared with air-based variable capacitor converters of similar size. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper describes a co-evolutionary algorithm for generating simple spatially oriented tactics and considers whether students can learn better by playing against co-evolved opponents or by playing against an expert system or other similar hard-coded opponent. Although a number of artificially intelligent tutoring and e-learning systems exist, our work looks at using co-evolution to generate competent opponents for human students to learn from. This paper describes and discusses early results on using computationally intelligent opponents for tactical training of human students. Initial results indicate that the learning environment for human players, measured by game difficulty and transfer of training, is comparable across co-evolved and hard-coded computer opponents. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents the multi-band inductor with 0.18 μm CMOS technology on plastic achieves high Q-factor and small size for multiband applications. The multi-band inductor on VLSI-standard Si Substrate is operated at ultra-wide band range. The operation frequencies are near 3 GHz, 4 GHz, 7.5 GHz and 9 GHz of the Q-factor are 6.5, 6.7, 8 and 11.5 with the inductance 2.1, 1.6, 1.1, 0.6 nH, respectively. After thinning-down the Si substrate to 90 μm and mounting on plastic, the Q-factor can improve 25∼31% without changing the inductance due to reducing the parasitic effect from Si-substrate. © 2010 IEEE.

Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle. The proposed Virtual Campus enables mobile clients to perform online learning activities and is a step towards achieving the 'anytime, anywhere' paradigm. © 2010 IEEE.

Multi-core technologies are widely used in embedded systems. Stochastic resource allocation can guarantee certain quality of the services (QoS). In heterogeneous embedded system resource allocation, execution time distributions of different tasks on cores are predicted before scheduling. The difference between actual execution time and estimated execution time may lead to allocations which are not robust. In this paper, we present an evaluation of impacts of inaccurate information on resource allocation. We propose a systematic measure of the robustness degradation and evaluate how inaccurate probability parameters affect the robustness of resource allocations. Furthermore, we compare the performance of three widely used greedy heuristics when using the inaccurate information. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a prototype implementation of an intelligent system called safe system that monitors container security in the port logistics. Logistics supports in the port require safe container status. The main focus of our contribution is to design a system that supports RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Readers of all types (such as Reader Protocol complaint and vendor provided Readers), real time monitoring of sensing information and notify management about the status of the container in harbor logistics. ©2010 IEEE.
