With the popularity of location-based services and the abundant usage of smart phones and GPS enabled devices, the necessity of outsourcing spatial data has grown rapidly over the past few years. Nevertheless, in the database outsourcing paradigm, the authentication of the query results at the client remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we focus on the Outsourced Spatial Database (OSDB) model and propose an efficient scheme, called VN-Auth, that allows a client to verify the correctness and completeness of the result set. Our approach can handle both k nearest neighbor (kNN) and range queries, and is based on neighborhood information derived by the Voronoi diagram of the underlying spatial dataset. Specifically, upon receiving a query result, the client can verify its integrity by examining the signatures and exploring the neighborhood of every object in the result set. Compared to the current state-of-the-art approaches (i.e., methods based on Merkle hash trees), VN-Auth produces significantly smaller verification objects (VO) and is more computationally efficient, especially for queries with low selectivity. © 2010 ACM.

As power electronics infiltrates the electric power distribution and conversion systems, stability issues become increasingly significant. The risk of instability due to the use of constant power loads stems from the implementation of controlled output power conversion systems. In three phase converters, these issues are difficult to measure. Although there have been developments in the determination of system stability at interfaces due to stability, a framework to perform measurements necessary for such a determination has not been fully developed. This paper presents a method to measure three phase impedances in the D-Q rotating reference frame for three phase AC systems and demonstrates the successful implementation and operation of such a system. Results are shown measuring a three phase passive load with a 2 kW source.

The problem of combinatorial explosion in system development inevitably arises when dealing with cyberworlds. To solve the problem, we have developed a data processing system called the Cellular Data System (CDS), based on the Incrementally Modular Abstraction Hierarchy (IMAH) in the cellular model, which offers powerful mathematical reason. In this paper, we design and implement a continuous quantity factor to deal with objects that express continuous quantity and integrate it into the condition formula search, which is the effective data search function of CDS, used to analyze data in cyberworlds without limitation by defining schema. If you take advantage of continuous quantity factors with the condition formula search in business application development, application logic development is made much simpler. In addition, we verify the effectiveness of a continuous quantity factor by taking up examples of core logic development of business applications. © 2010 IEEE.

We present CapaCon, an access control mechanism for interdevice communications through TCP connections. CapaCon provides capability-based access control for a system composed of devices. Using CapaCon, an administrator does not need to set access control policies for each device and can manage these policies outside the system. A capability consists of an object device identifier and the list of permitted operations for that object device. Subject devices that maintain capabilities can access object devices corresponding with those capabilities. To protect a capability from being fabricated, CapaCon uses a digital signature. CapaCon can be used without modifying existing device programs. We analyzed the safety of capabilities in CapaCon, and measured network throughputs and processing times of CapaCon. These experimental results show the practicality of CapaCon. © 2010 ACM.

Cloud computing is an emerging computing paradigm in which IT resources and capacities are provided as services over the Internet. Promising as it is, this paradigm also brings forth new challenges for data security and access control when users outsource sensitive data for sharing on cloud servers, which are likely outside of the same trust domain of data owners. To maintain the confidentiality of sensitive user data against untrusted servers, existing work usually apply cryptographic methods by disclosing data decryption keys only to authorized users. However, in doing so, these solutions inevitably introduce heavy computation overhead on the data owner for key distribution and data management when fine-grained data access control is desired, and thus do not scale well. In this paper, we present a way to implement scalable and fine-grained access control systems based on attribute-based encryption (ABE). For the purpose of secure access control in cloud computing, the prevention of illegal key sharing among colluding users is missing from the existing access control systems based on ABE. This paper addresses this challenging open issue by defining and enforcing access policies based on data attributes and implementing user accountability by using traitor tracing. Furthermore, both the user grant and revocation are efficiently supported by using the broadcast encryption technique. Extensive analysis shows that the proposed scheme is highly efficient and provably secure under existing security models. © 2010 IEEE.

Dynamic spectrum access in cognitive radio (CR) networks is emerging concept to utilize the scarce spectrum in an efficient manner. CR systems will operate in heterogeneous networks in which efficient use of resources will require control of both transmission rate and power for active CRs. In this paper we propose an algorithm for resource allocation in dynamic spectrum access ad-hoc networks where active CR links satisfy their own quality-of-service (QoS) requirements as well as the interference constraints to respect the incumbent primary user- transmissions. We formulate the problem of joint transmission rate and power control for active CR links to maximize their surplus (or net utility) functions using distributed interference compensation as a non-cooperative game. We illustrate the proposed approach with numerical results obtained from sim- ulations. © 2010 IEEE.

M-FISH (Multiplex Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization) is a multichannel chromosome imaging technique that allows the color discrimination of human chromosomes. Although M-FISH facilitates the visual detection of chromosome rearrangements, the success of this technique largely depends on the accuracy of the pixel-by-pixel classification. In this study, we present a semi unsupervised method for M-FISH chromosome image classification. First, we segment the chromosome pixels using an automated thresholding procedure. Five features for each pixel are extracted, describing the intensity of the five channels. These features are then normalized. Second, we employed the K-means algorithm in order to cluster the chromosome pixels into the 24 chromosome classes. We have used the emission information for each chromosome class in order to initialize the cluster centers. Our method has been tested on the ADIR M-FISH database and an overall accuracy of 72.48% is achieved. This is comparable to supervised pixel-by-pixel classification methods that use training set to build the classifiers, while our method does not use a training set. © 2010 IEEE.

One of the main topics of Kansei engineering is to associate human's impressions with physical features characterizing certain objects. Recently, such relationships have been applied to impression-based information systems that aim to retrieve/recommend objects suitable for user's impressions. However, such systems restrict use of a variety of expressions concerning each individual's image because the selectable impression words are fixed. To achieve information systems based on individuals' Kansei, it is important to provide a flexible human interface to deal with greater diversity of impression words. The aim of this study is to provide a new method for associating a large variety of impression words with physical features. In this paper, a new class of impression words called "meta-impression" is introduced to associate various impression words with physical features. A meta-impression is defined as an impression whose relationship to physical features has been revealed in past studies. In this paper, the adequacy of our method is presented by the experiment. ©2010 IEEE.

Examination Timetabling for Universities is a problem with significant practical importance. It belongs to the general class of educational timetabling problems and has been exposed to numerous approaches for solving it. We propose a parallel/distributed solution which is based on the metaheuristic method Scatter Search combined with Path Relinking in an attempt to diversify the search procedure by producing promising new timetables. Our approach improves on the best publicly available results for the datasets of ITC2007 (International Timetabling Competition 2007-2008). The constraint of limited execution time that was imposed by ITC2007 was disregarded in an effort to pursue the best values our approach could reach. We consider this specific examination timetabling problem as a "test bed" for timetabling problems in general and we expect to provide insight for developing effective solution processes for other practical scheduling problems.
