Electronic Support Measures consist of passive receivers which can identify emitters which, in turn, can be related to platforms that belong to 3 classes: Friend, Neutral, or Hostile. Decision makers prefer results presented in STANAG 1241 allegiance form, which adds 2 new classes: Assumed Friend, and Suspect. Dezert-Smarandache (DSm) theory is particularly suited to this problem, since it allows for intersections between the original 3 classes. However, as we know, the DSm hybrid combination rule is highly complex to execute and requires high amounts of resources. We have applied and studied a Matlab implementation of Tessem's k-l-x, Lowrance's Summarization and Simard's approximation techniques in the DSm theory for the fusion of ESM reports. Results are presented showing that we can improve on the time of execution while maintaining or getting better rates of good decisions in some cases.

Traditional formal education asks students studying in classroom and listening to teacher's lecturing. Recent years, teachers are taking students out from the classroom and doing field trip for learning history and cultural contents. Students can benefit from situated learning theory by interacting with the historical objects, local people, and cultural atmosphere. This research combines treasure hunting and mobile phone together to create a mobile treasure hunting learning situation for students learning historical and cultural contents during the field trip. In this mobile treasure hunting learning model, students act as hunters who can get hints through their mobile phones to find the treasures - the knowledge of historical and cultural contents. The mobile phones provide students not only display interface of treasure hunting maps and clues, but also position locator and treasure collector. In the experiment that eighteen elementary school students (5th Grade) learning in five-harbor district of Tainan, Taiwan. © 2010 IEEE.

Modeling of origami by graph rewriting

We formalize paper fold (origami) by graph rewriting. Origami construction is abstractly described by a rewrite system (O,R), where O is the set of abstract origami's and is a binary relation on O, called fold. An abstract origami is a triplet (Π,∼), where Π is a set of faces constituting an origami, and ∼ and are binary relations on Π, each representing adjacency and superposition relations of the faces. Origami construction is modeled as a rewrite sequence of abstract origami's. We then address the problems of representation and transformation of abstract origami's and of reasoning about the construction for computational purposes. We present a hypergraph of origami and define origami fold as algebraic graph transformation. The algebraic graph theoretic formalism enables us to reason origami in two separate domains of discourse, i.e. pure combinatoric domain and geometric domain R × R, and thus helps us to further tackle challenging problems in origami research.

Nowadays service creation and consumption is an ordinary, everyday task. Although services are commonly associated to a server-in a fixed machine on the Web- at present services may also be offered from portable devices (i.e., PDAs, smartphones, etc.). Both service provider's and users' mobility requires a highly dynamic service usage, thus bringing about the necessity to develop and use services in mobile environments. This article addresses the problems arising when designing interfaces for service creation and consumption on mobile devices, taking into account different aspects as those concerning the reduced screen size of those devices. This is a key aspect since the user should be capable of providing a sound and complete definition of the logic of a service. In this work a new paradigm is presented for service creation using natural written language. This paradigm has been developed so that the said service design can be performed from the mobile terminal itself, enabling utilization by non-experienced users and aiming at obtaining new service definitions which can be easily publishable and shareable. © 2010 IEEE.

In many applications the traffic traversing the network has inter-packet dependencies due to application-level encoding schemes. For some applications, e.g., multimedia streaming, dropping a single packet may render useless the delivery of a whole sequence. In such environments, the algorithm used to decide which packet to drop in case of buffer overflows must be carefully designed, to avoid goodput degradation. We present a model that captures such inter-packet dependencies, and design algorithms for performing packet discards. Traffic consists of an aggregation of multiple streams, each of which consists of a sequence of inter-dependent packets. We provide two guidelines for designing buffer management algorithms for this problem, and demonstrate the effectiveness of these criteria. We devise an algorithm according to these guidelines and evaluate its performance analytically, using competitive analysis. We also present a simulation study that shows that the performance of our algorithm is within a small fraction of the performance of the best offline algorithm. ©2010 IEEE.

The detection of high impedance faults has been an important research field for many years. The insignificant increase of the line current in case of such faults makes their detection a difficult task, although at the same time a crucial one for reasons of public safety. In this work, the influence of a high impedance fault on the line's overall input impedance is examined, for frequencies within both the CENELEC A Band and the typical high speed PLC range. The tested line configurations correspond to phase to phase and phase to ground signal injections. Also, the different effects of a high impedance fault according to the exact fault location and the line termination are investigated. Finally, a comparison among the results concerning the two selected frequency bands is conducted, in order to determine the one with the most desirable performance.

Ubiquitous knowledge discovery systems must be captured from many different perspectives. In earlier chapters, aspects like machine learning, underlying network technologies etc. were described. An essential component, which we shall discuss now, is still missing: Ubiquitous Data. While data themselves are a central part of the knowledge discovery process, in a ubiquitous setting new challenges arise. In this context, the emergence of data itself plays a large role, therefore we label this part of KDubiq systems ubiquitous data. It clarifies the KDubiq challenges related to the multitude of available data and what we must do before we can tap into this rich information source. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, the distributed output regulation problem of linear multi-agent systems is considered. Its background includes active leader following for the agents to track a leader with different dynamics and unmeasurable variables, and multi-agent consensus with environmental inputs. The driving force from active leaders or the environmental disturbance here is formulated as an exogenous system of the considered multi-agent networks. Then a systematic distributed design approach is proposed to handle output regulation via dynamic state feedback with the help of internal model. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability are given. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we present an approach to automate the planning of an endovascular stent graft for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), which are treated with bifurcated prosthesis (Y-stents) when located close to the iliac bifurcation. During the intervention, the folded Y-stent graft consisting of several parts is inserted via the iliac region and expanded inside the patient's body. The first step of the proposed approach is to detect different body landmarks with a statistical method. In the next step, these landmarks are used to calculate two vascular centerlines, which provide multiplanar reformatting (MPR) slices that are used for an automatic segmentation of the artery walls. The segmented artery walls provide the manufacturer specific measures to choose an adequate bifurcated prosthesis. In a final step, the expansion of the stent is simulated in the patient's data. Results for 50 abdominal aortic aneurysm cases provided by computed tomography angiography (CTA) acquisitions are successfully verified by a virtual stenting expert. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper studies rill and gully initiation and propagation on levees, dams, and general earth embankments. It specifically studies where these erosion features occur, and how long a particular embankment can sustain overtopping before breaching and catastrophic failure. This contrasts to previous levee erosion analysis, which has primarily concerned the final effects of erosion, such as soil loss, dept. of scour and breach width. This paper describes the construction of scaled-down physical models of levees composed of different homogeneous sands, as well as sand-clay mixtures, and their laboratory testing. A 3-D laser range scanner captured the surface features of the physical model, before and after erosion. The resulting data is utilized in developing digital simulations of the rill erosion process. Those simulations combine 3-D Navier-Stokes fluid simulations and a segmented height field data structure to produce an accurate portrayal of the erosive processes, which will be validated by physical modeling. © 2010 American Society of Civil Engineers.
