Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) system has been standardized in ITU-T Rec. G.984 series. It can provide high-speed optical subscriber networks with broad bandwidth and is getting more popular in access network. But with the continuous increase in higher bandwidth demand applications like IPTV, VOD, HDTV, E-learning etc, the need for much higher capacity over GPON links is more obvious. In this paper, we propose a method of deploying MAC protocols and a special filter over GPON system to get higher rate of GPON links' utilization.

This paper proposes an ant colony clustering algorithm of image segmentation based on cloud model. Making use of the characteristics of cloud model, it is able to dynamically adjust the value of the pheromone and the pheromone evaporation factor that differ from the traditional ant colony algorithm. Since ant colony algorithm has high ability to deal with local optimization and fuzzy clustering as well as its overall consideration of various factors such as the characteristic of gray and gradient of each pixel and the different membership of each pixel to the object, boundary, background and the noise, the algorithm can segment the image efficiently through the clustering of the pixels with different characteristics. For which followed by transforming the image with watershed algorithm. ©2010 IEEE.

Topic models could have a huge impact on improving the ways users find and discover content in digital libraries and search interfaces, through their ability to automatically learn and apply subject tags to each and every item in a collection, and their ability to dynamically create virtual collections on the fly. However, much remains to be done to tap this potential, and empirically evaluate the true value of a given topic model to humans. In this work, we sketch out some sub-tasks that we suggest pave the way towards this goal, and present methods for assessing the coherence and inter-pretability of topics learned by topic models. Our large-scale user study includes over 70 human subjects evaluating and scoring almost 500 topics learned from collections from a wide range of genres and domains. We show how a scoring model - based on pointwise mutual information of word-pairs using Wikipedia, Google and MEDLINE as external data sources - performs well at predicting human scores. This automated scoring of topics is an important first step to integrating topic modeling into digital libraries. © 2010 ACM.

Shielding of buried three phase high voltage cables can be done by placing the cables in conducting ferromagnetic U-shaped gutters covered by plates. In case of a perfect electrical contact between adjacent gutters and between adjacent cover plates, the induced currents in the shield efficiently reduce the field generated in the vicinity of the cables. However, as a perfect contact cannot be guaranteed, it is useful to quantify the effect of a bad electrical contact on the shielding performance. From 2D FEM, 3D FEM and experiments, it is observed that a bad contact does not influence significantly the shielding if the axial length of the plates is relatively long compared to their other dimensions. © 2010 IEEE.

Several important information retrieval tasks, including those in medicine, law, and patent review, have an authoritative standard of relevance, and are concerned about retrieval completeness. During the evaluation of retrieval effectiveness in these domains, assessors make errors in applying the standard of relevance, and the impact of these errors, particularly on estimates of recall, is of crucial concern. Using data from the interactive task of the TREC Legal Track, this paper investigates how reliably the yield of relevant documents can be estimated from sampled assessments in the presence of assessor error, particularly where sampling is stratified based upon the results of participating retrieval systems. We show that assessor error is in general a greater source of inaccuracy than sampling error. A process of appeal and adjudication, such as used in the interactive task, is found to be effective at locating many assessment errors;but the process is expensive if complete, and biased if incomplete. An unbiased double-sampling method for resolving assessment error is proposed, and shown on representative data to be more efficient and accurate than appeal-based adjudication. © 2010 ACM.

This paper presents an heuristic method to give an approximated solution to the observer siting problem on high resolution terrains that are too large to be processed in the internal memory. Informally, the problem is to determine an optimal positioning of as few as possible observers for being able to observe as many target points as possible. Tests have shown that the proposed heuristic can solve this problem using, on average, fifteen percent fewer observers than another heuristic described in the literature. This will permit more efficient positioning of facilities such as mobile phone towers, fire observation towers, and vigilance systems. © 2010 IEEE.

Time-series data mining is a very important element of data mining. As a typical time-series data, video data has been widely used for many applications such as film, medical, sports and traffic areas. In this paper we integrates several technologies into the video moving object time-series data mining. We propose a similarity analysis and clustering algorithm for videos based on the moving trajectory time series data wavelet transform of the moving object in the videos. Utilizing the image difference technique, our algorithm detects the moving objects from the scene surveillance video, calculates the centroid of the moving object, and uses the centroid series to character the moving trajectory of the object. Then we use wavelet analysis method to achieve dimensionality reduction and get the first k wavelet coefficient to substitute the original motion timeserial data. Based on the Euclidean distance, we utilize two judgement rules to determine the similarity of time-serial data and cluster them, use the rules to perform the similarity search and clustering of video. We apply the algorithm to athletic sports videos analysis. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper the effect of the magnetizing inrush currents, occurring during the energization of transformers, is examined. A case study is presented for an industrial arrangement consisting of five large transformers and three generators. The transformers are modeled using the Hybrid/XFMR model implemented in the well known transients program ATP-EMTP. This model can give an accurate representation of the core of the transformers. Various scenarios are simulated in order to investigate the occurrence of magnetizing inrush currents and the parameters affecting the peak value and the shape of the waveforms. Finally, various methods to reduce inrush currents are presented and evaluated.

Telemetric monitoring of vital parameters of patients with chronic diseases is recognized to improve their medical condition and hence their quality of life. It also improves treatment adjustments, reaction time in acute cases and helps to reduce duration and costs of hospitalization. As a result of this, there are plenty of products and solutions for personal health monitoring available today that acquire physiological data in real-time. In order for such systems to be widely acceptable and utilized by the medical community and the patients, they must be developed satisfying the security requirements imposed by real-time data communication and protection of sensitive physiological data and measurements, data integrity and confidentiality, and protection of the monitored patient's privacy. The work presented in this paper intends to fill the security gap, which makes these devices and the data acquired by them, vulnerable to any kind of attacks. By utilizing MPEG-21 standard's primitives, we show that protection of transmitted medical information and enhancement of patient's privacy is accomplished, since there is selective and controlled access to medical data that sent toward the hospital's servers. © 2010 IEEE.

The Industrial Ethernet is promising for the implementation of a Cloud Computing based control system. However, numerous standard organizations and vendors have developed various Industrial Ethernets to satisfy the real-time requirements of field devices. This paper presents a real-time reconfigurable protocol stack to cope with this challenge, by introducing the architecture with a core of dynamic routing and autonomic local scheduling. It is based on the deterministic and stochastic Petri-Nets (DSPN) method to illustrate the performance of producer/consumer based application model, CSMA/CD based node accessing activities, and TDMA based resource allocation for real time and non-real time traffic. Furthermore, the predicted time distribution for evaluating the stability of a control system can be obtained from the proposed DSPN model. It is shown that the DSPN modeling yields good verification analysis and performance prediction results through a real experimentation. © 2010 IEEE.
