In this work a decision support tool for optimal administration of Levodopa (L-Dopa) in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) is presented. The so called Medication Change Proposer (MCP) is part of the PERFORM system, which monitors patient's motion status using a set of wearable sensors, assesses PD symptoms and their severity through dedicated symptoms detection modules (On-Off detection and LevodopaInduced Dyskinesia detection), and proposes treatment plans to alleviate the symptoms. The methodology is based on the analysis of the outputs of the symptoms detection modules, taking into account the uncertainty (confidence) propagated by their respective classification algorithms. The evaluation of our methodology is performed using artificial follow-up data produced by a specially built simulation environment. The obtained results demonstrate that the MCP outputs compare well with the experts' decisions, indicating high performance. © 2010 IEEE.

Consistency checking needs to be done from the earliest phase of requirements capture as requirements captured by requirement engineers are often vague, error-prone and inconsistent with users' needs. To improve such consistency checking we have applied a traceability approach with visualization capability. We have embedded this into a light-weight automated tracing tool in order to allow users to capture their requirements and generate Essential Use Case models of these requirements automatically. Our tool supports inconsistency checking between textual requirements, abstract interactions that derive from the text and Essential Use Case models. A preliminary evaluation has been conducted with target end users and the tool usefulness and ease of use are evaluated. We describe our motivation for this research, our prototype tool and results of our evaluation. © 2010 Crown Copyright.

The vehicular wireless ad hoc network (VANET), a specialized wireless sensor network, is booming to provide safety and comfort for passengers. Special features of VANET, such as high mobility nodes and large scale node population, make the Quality of Service (QoS) task extremely challenging. To provide Quality of Service (QoS) to traffic safety and entertainment applications in VANET, we propose a routing protocol which improves QoS of VANET in terms of delay, response time and throughput. The proposed scheme disseminates packets among the links which has longer expiration time calculated by using relative velocity vectors. The optimal routing path and a backup routing path are selected by balancing stability, cost and delay. Besides, the proposed scheme gracefully switches to a new optimal routing path before the current routing path is broken. Simulation results indicate that the proposed protocol improves the bandwidth, routing duration, and response time. © 2010 IEEE.

Requirements changes sometimes cause a project to fail. A lot of projects now follow incremental development processes so that new requirements and requirements changes can be incorporated as soon as possible. These processes are called integrated requirements processes, which function to integrate requirements processes with other developmental processes. We have quantitatively and qualitatively investigated the requirements processes of a specific project from beginning to end. Our focus is to clarify the types of necessary requirements based on the components contained within a certain portion of the software architecture. Further, each type reveals its typical requirements processes through its own rationale. This case study is a system to manage the orders and services of a restaurant. In this paper, we introduce the case and categorize its requirements processes based on the components of the system and the qualitative characteristics of ISO-9126. We could identify seven categories of the typical requirements process to be managed and/or controlled. Each category reveals its typical requirements processes and their characteristics. A sine-wave noise generator with a harmonic-eliminated waveform is proposed for measuring the noise tolerance of analog IPs. In the waveform, harmonics up to the thirteenth harmonic are eliminated by combining seven rectangular waves with 22.5-degree spacing phases. This waveform includes only high-region frequency harmonic components which are easily suppressed by a low-order filter. In the circuit, the harmonic-eliminated waveform generator is combined with a current-controlled oscillator and a frequency-adjustment circuit. The sine-wave noise generator can generate power-line noise from 20 MHz to 220 MHz in 1 MHz steps. A spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 45 dB is obtained at the 100 MHz noise frequency. ©2010 IEEE.

Chip multiprocessor technique has been implemented in embedded systems due to the tremendous computation requirements. Three dimension chip multiprocessor architecture has been studied recently for integrating more functionalities and providing higher performance. The high temperature on chip is a critical issue for the 3D architecture. In this paper, we propose an online thermal prediction model for 3D chip. Using this model, we present a task scheduling algorithm based on rotation scheduling to reduce the peak temperature on chip. We consider the data dependencies, especially the inter-iteration dependencies which are not well considered in most of the current thermal-aware task scheduling algorithms. Our simulation result shows that our algorithm can efficiently reduce the peak temperature up to 10 °C. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate a generalization of the infinite time horizon linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for systems evolving on the special orthogonal group SO(3). Using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, we derive the necessary conditions for optimality and the associated Hamiltonian equations. For a special class of weighting matrices, we show that the optimal feedback can be computed explicitly and we prove that the non differentiable value function is the viscosity solution of an appropriate Hamiltn-Jacobi-Bellman equation on SO(3). For arbitrary positive definite weighting matrices, numerical simulations allow us to explore the relationship between the optimal trajectories and weighting matrices, and in particular to highlight nontrivial non differentiability properties of the value function.

Magnetic molecular-level interrogation, manipulation, and diagnosis are emerging as lab-on-chip platforms. These platforms entail low-cost, low-power, portable, and high efficiency integrated implementations. We introduce an all-integrated programmable 16 × 16 magnetic coil array chip for sensing and actuating small single bio-objects or collaboratively manipulating larger ones. The die-size is 1.5 × 1.5 mm 2 designed in bulk 0.5 μm CMOS technology. The integrated design does not require any external magnetic source. It relies on the Hall effect generated by the smallest permissible vertical coil inductors (in this reported technology, the smallest inductor's planar area is 6 μm × 6 μm). The coil array is selectively and dynamically controlled. Each cell, composed of the coil and its logical control circuitry, can detect small objects in the order of 1μm diameter as well as emit eight programmable magnetic field levels for manipulation. All array sensing and driving components are shared to reduce the overall imprint. Also, they are tuned to work at 900 MHz incorporating high-speed serial row/column switching for seamless pseudoparallel operation.

Requirements are commonly vague and ambiguous. In this paper, we describe an automated Inconsistency Checker called MaramaAI for checking for high- level inconsistency between textual requirements, abstract interactions and Essential Use Cases. We use concepts of phrase extraction and essential interaction patterns to carry out these checks. We provide further support for checking of requirements quality attributes such as completeness and correctness using visual differencing. © 2010 Crown Copyright.

Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) and larger Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) constitute a powerful tool for the modern warfighter and first responder. However, every developing technology must first be tested before being exported to the battlefield or hot spot to assure predictable behaviors. In today's digital age, computers give designers and testers unprecedented ability to quickly and easily test virtual models before physical prototypes are created and field tested. We have utilized emerging Free Open Source software (FOSS) simulators and workbenches (e.g. FlightGear and AUV Workbench) to improve mission-driven MAV/UAV video and imagery capture and analysis capabilities. In this project, use of FlightGear to analyze flight trajectories and video capture capabilities of different UAVs is presented. FlightGear allows the free implementation of changeable flight dynamic models, weather, autopilot, GPS, and multiplayer to be included in the analysis of simulated flights. Another attractive aspect of FlightGear is its extensible and easy-to-modify implementation. Modifications are accomplished by changing or adding human readable XML files in the FlightGear subdirectories. In this effort, existing aerial vehicle models are incorporated into FlightGear to create flight trajectories and analyze video capture capabilities to determine the necessary toolset for analyzing imagery data to meet the mission needs. The limitations of the existing camera systems as well as effects of various flight parameters on mosaicking and georegistration are presented here. Sample analysis of the effect of aerial vehicle speed on the overlap of frames captured at the typical 30 frames/second frame rate, which provides a base for comparison of flight attributes, are demonstrated together with other parameters that affect mission performance. © 2010 ASCE.
